Logan, Prof., (Ph.D. MIT 1965) is an Emeritus Professor of physics, a fellow of St. Michael’s College, and a member of the School of the Environment at the University of Toronto. He is also the Chief Scientist at OCAD (Ontario College of Art and Design) University in the Strategic Innovation Lab. He has a variety of experiences as an academic and has engaged in research in a variety of fields, including physics, media ecology, complexity theory, information theory, systems biology, environmental science, linguistics, and industrial design. He has published with and collaborated with Marshall McLuhan and continues his McLuhan studies research. He is also an author or editor of 19 books, 23 book chapters, and over 150 articles in refereed journals. He once taught The Poetry of Physics and the Physics of Poetry course at the U. of Toronto and has published a book with the same title as that of the course. He was the recipient of the Walter J. Ong Award for Career Achievement in Scholarship by the Media Ecology Association. Adriana Braga is an Associate Professor of the Graduate Program of Social Communication at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), researcher of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq/Brazil), coordinator of the Research Group on Digital Interactions (GRID) and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Macau, China. With a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and BA in Psychology, she is also the author of the books Introdu¸c˜ao a` Ecologia das M´ıdias (Introduction to Media Ecology with Lance Strate and Paul Levinson, 2019); Personas Materno-Eletrˆonicas (Maternal-Electronic Personae, 2008); CMC, Identidades e G´enero (CMC, Identities and Gender, in Portugal, 2005); and Corpo-Ver˜ao (Summer-Body, 2016). Her Ph.D. dissertation won the CAPES Thesis Award (MEC/Brazil) and Harold Innis Award (Media Ecology Association/USA). She serves as Vice President of the Media Ecology Association. She currently coordinates the Digital Media Lab (LabMiD), which develops projects in digital communication, literature, Brazilian culture, mobile telephony, digital literacy, gender, sociolinguistics, and technology. vii Preface to ”AI AND THE SINGULARITY” Dear Readers, The essays that we have collected address the question of whether the technological singularity—the notion that AI-based computers can exceed human intelligence—is a fallacy or a great opportunity. To address this question, we have invited a group of scholars whose positions on the singularity range from advocates to skeptics. No conclusion can be reached, as the development of artificial intelligence is still in its infancy, and there is much wishful thinking and imagination in this issue rather than trustworthy data. The reader will find a cogent summary of the issues faced by researchers who are working to develop the field of artificial intelligence and, in particular, artificial general intelligence. The only conclusion that can be reached is that there exists a variety of well-argued positions as to where AI research is headed. We would be happy to hear from you, and we welcome your opinions. Simon Klein Humans repeatedly commit the so called “conjunction fallacy”, erroneously judging the probability of two events occurring together as higher than the probability of one of the events. Certain hints have been shown to mitigate this tendency. The present thesis investigated the relations between three psychological factors and performance on conjunction tasks after reading such a hint. The factors represent the understanding of probability and statistics (statistical numeracy), the ability to resist intuitive but incorrect conclusions (cognitive reflection), and the willingness to engage in, and enjoyment of, analytical thinking (need-for-cognition). Participants (n = 50) answered 30 short conjunction tasks and three psychological scales. A bimodal response distribution motivated dichotomization of performance scores. Need-for-cognition was significantly, positively correlated with performance, while numeracy and cognitive reflection were not. The results suggest that the willingness to engage in, and enjoyment of, analytical thinking plays an important role for the capacity to avoid the conjunction fallacy after taking a hint. The hint further seems to neutralize differences in performance otherwise predicted by statistical numeracy and cognitive reflection.

  • Cognitive Bias Mitigation: How to Make Decision-Making More Rational?
    Cognitive Bias Mitigation: How to make decision-making more rational? Abstract Cognitive biases distort judgement and adversely impact decision-making, which results in economic inefficiencies. Initial attempts to mitigate these biases met with little success. However, recent studies which used computer games and educational videos to train people to avoid biases (Clegg et al., 2014; Morewedge et al., 2015) showed that this form of training reduced selected cognitive biases by 30 %. In this work I report results of an experiment which investigated the debiasing effects of training on confirmation bias. The debiasing training took the form of a short video which contained information about confirmation bias, its impact on judgement, and mitigation strategies. The results show that participants exhibited confirmation bias both in the selection and processing of information, and that debiasing training effectively decreased the level of confirmation bias by 33 % at the 5% significance level. Besides distorted decision-making and judgement in the areas of medicine, law, and military (Nickerson, 1998), cognitive biases can also lead to economic inefficiencies. Slovic et al. (1977) point out how they distort insurance purchases, Hyman Minsky (1982) partly blames psychological factors for economic cycles. Shefrin (2010) argues that confirmation bias and some other cognitive biases were among the significant factors leading to the global financial crisis which broke out in 2008.

The theory of computation offers full answers to the questions, • what problems can in principle be solved by computer programs? • what functions can in principle be computed by computer programs? • what formal languages can in principle be decided by computer programs? Full answers to these questions have been found in the last 70 years or so, and we will learn about them. (And it turns out that these questions are all the same question). The theory of computation is well-established, transparent, and basically simple (you might disagree at first). The theory of complexity offers many insights to questions like • for a given problem / function / language that has to be solved / computed / decided by a computer program, how long does the fastest program actually run? • how much memory space has to be used at least? • can you speed up computations by using different computer architectures or different programming approaches? The theory of complexity is historically younger than the theory of computation – the first surge of results came in the 60ties of last century.
