About Imperial War Museums

IWM is a family of five museums: IWM London; IWM North in Trafford, Greater Manchester; IWM Duxford near Cambridge; the in , London; and the historic ship HMS , moored in the on the . We are one of the world’s leading authorities on conflict and its impact on people’s lives – from 1914 through to the present day and beyond. Our collections are filled with personal stories and experiences, inspiring powerful and often conflicting emotions. We aim to share these stories with as many audiences as possible across the world in a way that engages and challenges them; increasing understanding of why we go to war and the effect that conflict has on people’s lives. In other words, we expect our stories to change the way people think about war.

A New Programming Direction IWM is launching a new Public Engagement and Learning programme which is courageous, authoritative, relevant, and empathetic. This new way of programming will embrace other disciplines such as STEM, theatre, journalism, and visual art and will use creative learning techniques to offer different perspectives on our subject matter. It will achieve measurable impact on our audiences using our collections and exhibition seasons to realise IWM’s potential in delivering a global citizenship agenda for adults, schoolchildren, young people, and families.

Syria: A Conflict Explored is the first season in the new Conflict Now programming strand, launched to coincide with our centenary year. 100 years on from IWM’s establishment during the First World War, we remain as relevant today as we were in 1917, responding to the world in which we all live and sharing the personal accounts of those who are experiencing conflict now. A series of debates, tours and encounters will delve into the complexity and shifting nature of the Syria conflict throughout the season including a residency with award-winning creative collective Anagram exploring the way we consume information, and a Conflict Café which offers the chance to join citizens and journalists who have experienced the Syrian conflict on the ground for a conversation and to ask questions.
