Ekológia (Bratislava), Vol. 37, No. 1, p. 11–23, 2018. Tatra’s lakes are vulnerable ecosystems and an important element of the alpine landscape. Mainly some shallow lake basins succumb to intense detritus sedimentation, fine fractions of material from the catchment area or to the overgrowing of water level by vegetation. In this paper, changes and dynamics of the 12 Tatra’s lake shorelines that were selected based on the detailed mapping of their extent are pointed out. Changes were assessed by accurate comparisons of historical and current orthophoto maps from the years 1949, 1955 and 2015 – and therefore, based on the oldest and the latest relevant materials. Due to the overgrowing of lakes caused by vegetation, their water surface decreased from -0.9% up to -47.9%, during the examined period. Losses were caused by the overgrowing of open water surface by the communities of sedges and peat bogs. The most significant dynamics of the shorelines during the last decades were reached by those lakes, into which fine sediments were simultaneously deposited by means of mountain water coarse.

  • Classification of the Tatra Mountain Lakes in Terms of the Duration of Their Ice Cover (Poland and Slovakia)
Title: Classification of the Tatra Mountain lakes in terms of the duration of their ice cover (Poland and Slovakia) Author: Bogdan Gądek, Mirosław Szumny, Bartłomiej Szypuła Citation style: Gądek Bogdan, Szumny Mirosław, Szypuła Bartłomiej. (2020). Classification of the Tatra Mountain lakes in terms of the duration of their ice cover (Poland and Slovakia). "Journal of Limnology" (Vol. 79, iss. 1 (2017), s. 70-81), doi 10.4081/jlimnol.2019.1920 ORIGINAL ARTICLE Classification of the Tatra Mountain lakes in terms of the duration of their ice cover (Poland and Slovakia) Bogdan Gądek,* Mirosław Szumny, Bartłomiej Szypuła Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Silesia in Katowice, Będzińska Str. 60, 41-200 Sosnowiec, Poland ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of a classification of the Tatra lakes based on the duration of their ice cover, altitude, volume, and potential incoming solar radiation (PISR). It is embedded in the context of the impact of current climate change on the mountain environment. A digital elevation model, morphometric data, satellite imagery from the winter seasons of 2015-2017 and the Wrocław taxonomy method were used in the study. It was found that the order of freezing and thawing of the lakes investigated may change from year to year. The relationship between ice cover duration and altitude is clearly weakened by variations in lake volumes, with insolation having a noticeably lesser effect. Determining the duration of ice cover of the lakes over several seasons facilitates identifying the similarities and dissimilarities between them. Five groups of lakes displaying similar characteristics were identified as well as 2 groups of lakes with highly individual characteristics.

Eutrophication poses the main threat to the quality of water in alpine lakes. Even small inflows of biogenic elements can disrupt the ecological balance of these ecosystems. The aim of this study was to verify the hypothesis that recreational activities and easy access to alpine lakes contribute to changes in their ecological status. This hypothesis was verified by analyzing the presence of hydromacrophytes in two lakes of the Tatra National Park (Poland). The analysis was carried out along segments of hiking trails which were evaluated for accessibility to the studied lakes. Underwater surveys were carried out during scuba diving expeditions in 2012–2016. Submerged vegetation was evaluated in both lakes. This is the first study in Poland and one of the few projects in the world to have relied on such extensive support from scuba divers to generate highly accurate measurements.

Kraków. e-ISSN 2449-8890, ISSN 1640-629X. ABSTRACT: The paper reviews 150 years of phycological research carried out mainly by Polish scientists in the waters of the Tatra Mts. The first report on the occurrence of algae in this area was made 150 years ago by Karl Kalchbrenner (1866), who listed 10 common species of algae in streams. The first Polish researchers to examine algae in Tatra waters were Dr. Antoni Ślósarski and Prof. Józef Rostafiński, followed by Prof. Marian Raciborski. In 1909, Dr. Roman Gutwiński published his monograph, which is still a reference source for Tatra algae researchers. Between 1919 and 1939, Prof. Jadwiga Wołoszyńska studied dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae), Dr. Karol Starmach blue-green algae (Cyanophyta), Dr. Roman Dreżopolski euglenoids (Euglenophyceae), Dr. Adam Bursa golden brown algae (Chrysophyceae) (Hydrurus foetidus (Villars) Trevisan 1848), and Dr. Bolesław Namysłowski algae in springs. The 1950s saw further development of phycological research in the Tatra Mts, which was continued by Prof. Jerzy Czosnowski, Prof. Jadwiga Siemińska, Prof. Karol Starmach, Prof. Kazimierz Wasylik, Prof. Barbara Kawecka, Prof. Janina Kwandrans, Prof. Teresa Mrozińska, Dr. Cecylia Szklarczyk-Gazdowa, Dr. Andrzej Obidowicz and Dr. Irena Rejment-Grochowska, who mainly documented all the algal flora in the ecosystems they studied. In the 21st century, young scientists continue to research algae in the waters of the Tatra Mts: Prof.

The inflow of elements having biological origin may significantly aggravate the ecological status of those ecosystems. For this reason, the aim of this study was to map and assess the impact of anthropogenic pressure on alpine lakes in the valley of Dolina Pi˛eciuStawów Polskich (known in English as the Valley of Five Polish Lakes) in the Tatra National Park in Poland. The effects of tourism and easy access to alpine lakes on changes in their ecological status were determined. Tourist trails were evaluated based on the difficulty of access to the water surface of analyzed alpine lakes, with a method developed for assessing anthropogenic pressure on aquatic ecosystems. The method, deployed for the first time in 2019, was modified and adapted to the local environmental conditions in the research area.
