On Saturday 3rd March 2018, His Holiness Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (aba), the Worldwide Head of the Muslim Community, addressed delegates at the Humanity First International Conference in London and gave the following guidance:

“It is our obligation and paramount duty to assist all people who are facing difficulties and to strive to alleviate their pain and distress.”

“As an organisation, the core duty of Humanity First is to fully utilise its resources, and the capabilities and skills of those who serve it, to help the deprived and the destitute. Wherever people are facing material suffering and deprivation of any kind, Humanity First should seek to be at the forefront of providing aid and assistance. No matter where in the world, or which communities they hail from, Humanity First should seek to provide relief to those mired in poverty or hardship.”

“Thus, wherever any person is suffering or facing cruelty, it is your duty to be there to help and support them. Always try to increase your output and never become lazy or satisfied with your past achievements. Instead, your target should always be to elevate the standard of care provided by Humanity First through increased service and by helping as many people as possible.”

“We should be there to wipe away the tears of those who have been left bereft, Serving Mankind heartbroken and vulnerable. We should be there to give hope to those who were previously hopeless.”

“In Guatemala, Humanity First USA has built the Nasir Hospital which is now close to completion. However, do not think that the construction is the end, rather it is only the end of the beginning. Now, you will need to acquire doctors, nurses and other staff to ensure that the hospital does not become a white elephant but comes to fulfil its mandate and mission to serve the local people by providing high quality healthcare to them.”

“I pray that Humanity First continues to go from strength to strength and fulfils its objectives of serving humanity, irrespective of caste, creed or colour, throughout the world. May Allah reward all of you for your sincere efforts and enable you to increase your service to humanity – Ameen.”

Orphan Care In Benin, Humanity First’s only full time orphanage is taking in more orphans working with local authorities.

Elsewhere, across Africa, in response to natural disasters and conflict, Humanity First is supporting orphans in several countries including Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea Republic, Burkina Faso,Nigeria and Cameroon. In most cases, there is basic shelter and food provision for the children, and Humanity First supplements this with support for education and access to healthcare. Sometimes children cannot stay in education because they cannot afford the school uniform, books or some basic fees, so our intervention is helping them to stay in education and a chance to build an independent future.

Similarly, our team has been supporting orphan facilities in Indonesia. In total we are supporting 580 orphans across 8 countries. Wherever we support orphans, our primary objective is their wellbeing and security, and keeping them near their extended family or original community.

Knowledge for Life Many schools have been built. In Togo, 8 schools that were in a poor state were rebuilt. We now have 6 schools running in Mali. In Jordan, we shifted the Mafraq school for refugee children to a new facility. In recent years, Humanity First has built 31 schools.

In 2018, new schools are being built in Tanzania, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Uganda. In Ghana, the focus will be in the northern regions beyond Tamale, with the first schools about to start construction in Obaladan and Wunguw.

Apart from the new schools, Humanity First teams have worked hard to renovate existing schools and classrooms through our Classroom Transformation Programme (CTP). During 2017, Humanity First worked on 66 classrooms in Jordan, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Uganda and Sierra Leone across 17 schools, benefitting over 5,900 children. Humanity First has also been supporting children with special needs such as the St Francis School for blind children in Soroti, Uganda. In total, Humanity First has now prepared classroom posters in English (22), French (17) and Arabic (10) with posters actively being translated into Spanish and

Portuguese. 200,000 10,000 2,000

Water for Life In Pakistan, our drive to alleviate thirst in the desert Tharaparkar region has resulted so far in 405 new wells covering over 350,000 people across 2,360 villages. Elsewhere, Humanity First is installing hand-pumps in Punjab, and also installed its first solar borehole for 1,550 people in Sadiq Pur which will also support 4,000 livestock for the community.

The main effort is in Africa working with our partner organisation IAAAE. We invested in a new drilling rig which was initially tested in Germany, and then deployed to be used jointly in Benin and Togo. We have also been reviewing our quality processes. Many boreholes have needed additional work as the water table is observed to drop in the region due to climate change. We are working with IAAAE to standardise our processes around pump refurbishments to increase the mean time between failures.
