FIGURE 10 − Fossil amphibian trackway from quarry in 41 Plainville, Massachusetts. v ABSTRACT The Narragansett Basin of Massachusetts and Rhode Island is a Carboniferous terrestrial basin and is the only location within New England that preserves fossil evidence of early amphibians and reptilomorphs. Footprints and trackways constitute the only record of these early tetrapods, but deformation during the Alleghanian orogeny has distorted the traces. To improve identification, description, and comparison with non- distorted material, tracks from Plainville, Massachusetts were retrodeformed using raindrop imprints as strain markers. The axial ratios of 354 raindrop imprints found on 12 slabs were analyzed using the Rf/Φ technique. Strain ratios for slabs ranged from 1.33 to 1.93, with individual raindrop imprints ranging from 1.14 to 2.51. Although weakly expressed, cleavage exhibits an anastomosing characteristic and is visible on bedding surfaces in the form of a bedding-cleavage intersection lineation. The fluctuation of the bedding-cleavage intersection lineation varies between 10° and 33° among the raindrop-imprint—bearing slabs. This fluctuation is strongly correlated to the strain ratio of a slab, and this correlation was used to obtain strain ratios for slabs lacking raindrop imprints. Vertebrate tracks appeared less distorted following retrodeformation, and the accuracy of the methods was successfully tested by retrodeforming insect traces that were originally bilaterally symmetrical. Deformed raindrop imprints and bedding-cleavage intersection lineation provide a useful new way of retrodeforming fossils, as well as a more complete understanding of the fossil record of early tetrapods in New England. vi INTRODUCTION The appearance of fully terrestrial animals marks a major event in vertebrate evolution. Evidence for the existence of early amphibians and reptilomorphs, the group of animals that gave rise to all modern amniotes, comes from skeletal remains found in Carboniferous rocks from around the world (Caroll, 1988). However, in New England, the only record of these early tetrapods consists of footprints and trackways preserved in sedimentary rocks of the Narragansett Basin (Woodworth, 1900; Lull, 1920; Willard and Cleaves, 1929). Although these trace fossils are relatively common, they have been tectonically deformed and require retrodeformation in order to be properly described, identified and compared with

Nanopus (?) vetustus and Bipezia bilobata named by Matthew in the same paper, have been reexamined and remain as nomina dubia. Here we document the variation of digit proportions and trackway parameters in 25 trackways (69 step cycles) from nine localities and seven further specimens with incomplete step cycles from the type locality of Ichniotherium cottae (Gottlob quarry) in order to find out whether this type of Ichniotherium tracks represents a homogeneous group or an assemblage of distinct morphotypes and includes variability indicative for evolutionary change in trackmaker locomotion. According to our results, the largest sample of tracks from three Lower Permian sites of the Thuringian Forest, commonly referred to Ichniotherium cottae, is not homogeneous but shows a clear distinction in pace length, pace angulation, apparent trunk length and toe proportions between tracks from Bromacker quarry and those from the stratigraphically older sites Birkheide and Gottlob quarry.

    A revision of tetrapod footprints from the late Carboniferous of the West Midlands, UK Luke E. Meade, Andrew S. Jones and Richard J. Butler School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom ABSTRACT A series of sandstone slabs from Hamstead, Birmingham (West Midlands, UK), preserve an assemblage of tetrapod trackways and individual tracks from the Enville Member of the Salop Formation (late Carboniferous: late Moscovian–Kasimovian). This material has received limited previous study, despite being one of the few British sites to preserve Carboniferous tetrapod footprints. Here, we restudy and revise the taxonomy of this material, and document it using 3D models produced using photogrammetry. The assemblage is dominated by large tracks assigned to Limnopus isp., which were made by early amphibians (temnospondyls). A number of similar but smaller tracks are assigned to Batrachichnus salamandroides (also made by temnospondyls). Dimetropus leisnerianus (made by early synapsids) and Dromopus lacertoides (made by lizard-like sauropsids such as araeoscelids) are also present. This ichnofauna contrasts with a slightly stratigraphically older, more extensive and better-studied assemblage from Alveley (Shropshire), which is dominated by small amphibians with relatively rare reptiliomorphs, but which lacks Dromopus tracks. The presence of Dromopus lacertoides at Hamstead is consistent with the trend towards increasing aridity through the late Carboniferous. A single slab with Late Palaeozoic tetrapod footprints from East Greenland has been housed at the Natural History Museum of Denmark for decades without scientific notice. The specimen comes from the Mesters Vig Formation of northern Scoresby Land in East Greenland and con- tains a monospecific assemblage of tetrapod footprints that we assign to Limnopus Marsh 1894. As there is no significant morphological difference from other records of this ichnogenus from North Received 29 February 2016 America, Europe and North Africa, the described tetrapod footprints can be referred to eryopoid Accepted in revised form 28 June 2016 temnospondyl trackmakers.
