Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968.

In order to win the Cold War, the leading bureaucrats were split over different approaches needed to achieve policy objectives in Latin America within the hierarchically regularized machinery- but it was not necessarily welcomed by every Latin American nation. There were three problems with Eisenhower’s staff structuring arrangement towards Latin America: (a) politicization of U.S.-Latin American relations from 1953 to 1961 by senior U.S. bureaucrats with an anti-communism agenda for Latin American development; (b) neglect of Latin American requests for public funds before 1959; (c) bureaucratic conflicts over different methods to achieve foreign policy objectives, often resulting in tensions between policy and operations.

Burroughs. Reich’s significance for Burroughs’ fiction is beyond doubt, as the appearance of Reich’s discoveries and inventions, such as orgones and orgone accumulators, in Burroughs’ major works demonstrates. Yet to date, no attempt has been made in academia to make all those references to Reich in Burroughs’ complete œuvre visible. In order to make the thinking of the Austrian-American psychoanalyst and scientist comprehensible for readers not familiar with Reich, the first section will provide a brief biographical outline. In the subsequent sections, the article will describe how Burroughs and other Beat writers discovered Reich, how and to what extent Burroughs incorporated Reich in his texts throughout his career and what opinions Burroughs expressed about Reich in interviews and letters. For the first time, with a summary as undertaken in this article and by documenting most of the references to Reich in Burroughs’ work, the importance of the former to the latter is revealed in a compact form.     Wilhelm Reich -- Depth Psychology and Bodywork Holotropic Breathwork facilitators can gain dimension for their practice by increasing their understanding of its historical antecedents. Christopher Turner’s Adventures in the Orgasmatron: How the Sexual Revolution Came to America, a recent cultural/political biography of Wilhelm Reich, provides insights into the development of breath and bodywork in depth psychology. Early on, Reich was Freud’s star trainee. Although he became progressively psychotic later in life and died in prison in 1957 at age 60, he significantly influenced the beatnik and hippie eras. His direct trainees included A.S. Neil, who founded Summerhill School, and Fritz Perls, of Gestalt fame. He indirectly influenced Allen Ginsberg and Norman Mailer, and he was a stimulus, which angered him, for introducing psychoanalytic ideas to the American advertising that promoted mass consumption. Turner, in his Economist-designated book of the year, paints Reich’s biography against a background canvas of events, ranging from the activities of Freud and his psychoanalytic spawn to the societal tumult and cataclysms of twentieth century Europe and America. A twenty-two-year-old medical student at the University of Vienna on leave to begin study after serving on the Italian front in the First World War, Reich came as a pilgrim to Freud’s doorstep in 1919. They immediately connected. Freud was so taken by Reich that he soon referred a patient to him, even though Reich had not quite begun his own psychoanalysis. When he did begin, Reich chose an analyst who had a practically pornographic interest in sex, and for the first Young Freud time he confided the guilty secrets and tragedies of his scarred childhood.
