Johnson3, Rudolf Meier2 & Christiane Weirauch1 Assassin bugs (Reduvioidea) are one of the most diverse (>7,000 spp.) lineages of predatory animals and have evolved an astounding diversity of raptorial leg modifications for handling prey. The evolution of these modifications is not well understood due to the lack of a robust phylogeny, especially at deeper nodes. We here utilize refined data from transcriptomes (370 loci) to stabilize the backbone phylogeny of Reduvioidea, revealing the position of major clades (e.g., the Chagas disease vectors Triatominae). Analyses combining transcriptomic and Sanger-sequencing datasets result in the first well-resolved phylogeny of Reduvioidea. Despite amounts of missing data, the transcriptomic loci resolve deeper nodes while the targeted ribosomal genes anchor taxa at shallower nodes, both with high support. This phylogeny reveals patterns of raptorial leg evolution across major leg types. Hairy attachment structures (fossula spongiosa), present in the ancestor of Reduvioidea, were lost multiple times within the clade. In contrast to prior hypotheses, this loss is not directly correlated with the evolution of alternative raptorial leg types. Our results suggest that prey type, predatory behavior, salivary toxicity, and morphological adaptations pose intricate and interrelated factors influencing the evolution of this diverse group of predators. Reduvioidea (> 7,000 spp.) are the most diverse superfamily of predatory insects and contain a medically impor- tant group (~140 spp.) of vertebrate blood feeders1,2, the Chagas disease transmitting Triatominae, or kissing bugs3. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Tagalis Stål is recorded for the first time from Colombia and two species are described as new: Tagalis dichroa sp. nov., from Acandí (Chocó), and Tagalis albispina sp. nov., from Gorgona Island (Cauca). Based on the structure of the male genitalia of the known species, we here propose at least four species groups within Tagalis: 1) T. evavilmae, 2) T. femorata, 3) T. baenai, T. grossii, and T. marquesi, and 4) T. dichroa sp. nov., T. inornata, and T. seminigra. Tagalis albispina sp. nov. known only from the female holotype, cannot be placed into this scheme. Digital micrographs of the habitus and gen- italia of the new species are provided. An updated key to the species of Tagalis is presented to facilitate the identification of the new species. Suarez ABSTRACT The following thesis comprises three parts: (1) the description of a new fossil assassin bug, (2) the use of this newly described taxon to inform the phylogenetic history of the family, and (3) a survey of previously-described extinct taxa compiled into the first taxonomic catalog of fossil Reduvioidea. The first chapter presents a new Eocene (Ypresian) fossil assassin bug, Aphelicophontes iuddorum gen. et sp. nov. (Reduviidae: Harpactorinae), described from the Green River Formation of Colorado. The specimens informing this description are marked by an extraordinary level of preservation, particularly in external and internal structures of the adult male genitalia. Following the description, discussions of phylogenetic signal and the implications for the systematics and evolutionary history of the group are presented. The second chapter uses Aphelicophontes iuddorum gen. et sp. nov. as a new calibration point in order to re-estimate the divergence dates of Reduvioidea. This analysis also utilizes a new set of fossil calibrations from previous studies. Tree topology is inferred using MrBayes and RAxML, and divergence dates are inferred using BEAST2. -

Structures that assist in spreading secretions produced by the metathoracic glands were examined in Reduviidae and Pachynomidae (Heteroptera). The systematic distribution of a row of long and stout setae on the metacoxa, the metacoxal comb, was reinvestigated in a representative sample in both taxa. Observations on living Dipetalogaster maximus (Reduviidae: Triatominae) corroborated the interpretation of this metacoxal comb as an evaporatory device, which assists in atomizing the gland secretions. In addition to the metacoxal comb, a row of stout setae on the metacetabulum – a metacetabular comb – was found in several Reduvii- dae, which interacts with the metacoxal comb during rotation of the metacoxa. In addition to those atomizing devices, cuticular modifications surrounding the opening of the metathoracic gland, which presumably form evaporatoria, were discovered in Ectricho- diinae. The meshwork-like structure of this cuticle resembles the cuticular modifications found associated with the opening of the Brindley’s gland in Reduviidae, but differs from the mushroom-like evaporatoria around the metathoracic glands in most Cimi- comorpha and Pentatomomorpha. Thus, two fundamentally different mechanisms to spread secretions of the metathoracic gland – atomization and evaporation – are present in Reduviidae. ABSTRACT THE ROLES OF NATURAL AND SEMI-NATURAL HABITAT IN THE PROVISIONING OF BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES OF BENEFICIAL INSECTS IN AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPES. by Jason M. Nelson As global demands increase for food, livestock, and biofuels, agricultural intensification could further increase the conversion of natural and semi-natural habitats into production. This intensification severely impacts natural plants and crops that rely entirely on pollination and pest control for fruit and seed production. I studied the species richness and composition of insect pollinators and natural enemies in 10 warm-season conservation grasslands. In Chapter 1, I tested richness, species composition, and trait composition (functional diversity) of pollinating bees and predatory beetles against patch area and vegetative composition as well as landscape variables based on surrounding land use and cover. In Chapter 2, I tested richness, species composition, and functional diversity of predatory and parasitoid species against patch and landscape variables. Overall, patch-level processes regulated species richness and composition of pollinators, whereas the surrounding landscape context was more important in the species richness, composition, and functional diversity of predatory and parasitoid insects. It is intended to provide dichotomous keys to species of Reduviidae listed as occurring in Florida. Records are based on literature only. Figures are mostly from Blatchley's Heteroptera of Eastern North America.] This is a large group (more than 160 North American species) of predaceous bugs, and many species are fairly common. They are often blackish of brownish in color, but many are brightly colored. The head is usually elongate with the part behind the eyes neck like. The beak is short and three-segmented, and its tip fits into a stridulatory groove in the prosternum. The abdomen in many species is widened in the middle, exposing the lateral margins of the segments beyond the wings. Most species are predaceous on other insects, but a few are bloodsucking and frequently bite people. Many species will inflict a painful bite if carelessly handled. One of the largest and most easily recognized assassin bugs is the wheel bug, Arilus cristatus (L.), a grayish bug 28-36 mm in length, with a semicircular crest on the pronotum that terminates in teeth and resembles a cogwheel. This species is fairly common in the East. The Masked hunter, Reduvius personatus (L.) is a brownish black bug 17-22 mm in length that is often found in houses. -
