The Lady Falcons bucked a 1-1 deficit to oust the gritty Lady Tamaraws, 25-17, 23-25, 23-25, 25-13, 15-11, at the Arena in San Juan and leaned on Shiela Pineda in crunch time. ―We should‘ve pushed it more in the second and third set, where we had a problem with our first ball,‖ said head coach Sherwin Menses. ―It was a good thing we recovered in the fourth and players showed how tough they are.‖ Pineda, once again, proved how invaluable she is for Adamson by scoring half of her squad‘s last eight points in the final frame which broke the 8-all deadlock. The Lady Falcons‘ star spiker finished with 25 points, all but one from kills as she towed her squad to a final four appearance, which would be her last. Mayette Zapanta also came through in the fifth frame along with Amanda Villanueva and they combined for 26 points for the Adamson. Villanueva eventually nailed the clincher after a miscue from the referee prematurely gave the Lady Falcons the win in the previous play. It was a confidence-boosting win for Adamson, which faces Ateneo on Sunday in another knockout match in the step-ladder format. The Lady Tamaraws, after showing tremendous promise this season, will go back to the drawing board after falling short of making it to the top 4. FEU botched a 2-1 set lead as it allowed Adamson to go on a momentum-halting 25-13 fourth frame win. Bernadeth Pons, who is a cinch for rookie of the year award, finished with 16 points to lead the Lady Tamaraws in a losing effort.

Editorial

It is a dynamic piece of writing on a trending topic usually designed to criticize, inform, entertain, influence and interpret. However, it could also teach and give praise. It is called the ―soul of the newspaper‖ for it gives the stand of the editorial board on an important existing issue that needs urgent discussion and educated opinion. It is classified according to the purpose of the writers. Types of Editorial

1. Editorial of Information - The purpose of this editorial is to give information. It may give additional materials directly related to a news event but not directly part of the event. The ending sentence summarizes the news event, and the related information follows.

Example: BAYANIHAN: FILIPINO CULTURAL HERITAGE

The effectiveness of the ―bayanihan‖ spirit was best shown by groups of students, hundreds of them, as they took to the streets in support of the clean-up and beautification drive. The students, coming from different schools in Tondo , pooled themselves together, cleaned the streets, and beautified them with potted ornamental plants. This is bayanihan in action. The bayanihan is an ancient Filipino custom, symbolic of the Filipino way of group work. As found in the Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala (1745) by P. Juan de Noceda and P. Pedro de Sncluar, the word bayanihan is derived from the rootword bayani meaning Obra comun or group work. Another related word, magpabayani, is a request for help by one who wants a job done for him, and evokes response from neighbors who come in groups to offer their services in all forms and their own simple ways. In return, the nagpabayani gets free breakfast, lunch or merienda —-a token of appreciation and gratitudes of the nagpabayani.

Bayanihan is more than help extended to another. It includes all kinds of assistance; aid, relief, or rescue given free. It may be getting together to pray for a departed soul, or grouping together for operation linis or operation tulong.

Working together in a spirit of faith, love, and charity is the essence of bayanihan; that spirits of togetherness that makes the Filipino ditict from other peoples of the world. It is fine spirit of group work to instill in the young for the development of proper attitudes towards all forms of team work at home, in school, and in tha community.

The bayanihan could be a basis for the strengthening and the enriching of our group life that will evolve a strong unity properly directed towards useful citizenship.

Example: A TALE OF HORROR: POPULATION EXPLOSION

Today the Philippines have a population of 80 million. At the present rate of growth, this small country would only be most affected by the evil effect of population explosion. This means that most of our high school students now, who would only be in their early 40′s or 50′s at that time, will be the ones to be most affected by the evil effect of population explosion. As of today our basic problems are food, water, housing, education, and pollution. Just imagined how these problems would be aggravated by the 150 million mouths to feed, backs to clothe, heads to shelter, and minds to educate. Also today the world has a population of four billions. These will double in 35 years time. The world population is increasing at the rate of an additional 2,000 million every eight years. In six and a half centuries from now, there would be one person standing on every square foot of land on earth. By that time, men would be no more place for plants to grow. The only way to avoid this situation would be through population planning. The first consequence can be seen in the faces of hungry men. One half of humanity is hungry at this moment. There is less food per person on earth today than there was30 years ago during the worldwide depression. Political chaos is death through world wars, revolutions, aggressions, rebellions, and the like. The third and the best remedy is population planning done through family planning. Family planning simply means the planning of the size and spacing of one‘s family by means of scientific knowledge and method. http://journsociety01.wordpress.com/types-of-editorial/

3. Editorial of Argumentation – It supports a definite attitude on an important question that has not been yet decided in the minds of many readers. Yet this also gives information and interpretation, the only purpose of this editorial is to draw on readers to agree to his/her side.

Example: SCIENCE NOT CONFLICT WITH RELIGION

Can science be reconciled with religion?

This was the argument discussed in the open forum during the science seminar-workshop held July 18 at the school social hall in observance of National Science and Technology week. This statement from the speech of Mr. Ernesto L. Damaso of the National Science Technology association who said that only truth does not change.

There is no contradiction between science and religion when both are property understood; what is needed is a proper knowledge of religion and a more scholarly interpretation of the bible, the Koran, and other similar books, for there can never be a contradiction between any truth revealed by God in the holy scriptures and any findings of science, properly tested and verified. Holy Scriptures of whatever religion are not textbooks of science. Their purpose is all the same-to inculcate moral, spiritual, and religious truth. The subject matter of science on the other hand is the physical universe. Its purpose is to discover the law of nature. Religion and science move in the essentially different orbits. Religion is concerned primarily with spiritual realities with moral values, with the intangibles which elude both the pills and the test tubes; science with matter and energy which can be seen, weighed, and measured. Religion has no fear of science. It does not tremble before discussion but before ignorance. It welcomes with eager hospitality every new finding. Thus further man goes into outer space, the better vision he has of GOD, and the deeper insight he acquires into the Divine Administration of the universe. Scientists are searching for the truth in the field of nature just as the moralists are seeking to clarify the application of ethereal and eternal truth to the changing social and economic conditions of modern life. The church welcomes truth wherever it may be found in history, in Biblical researchers, in psychological and natural fields of human inquiry. It welcomes every wise thought and every useful discovery, whatever its origin. http://journsociety01.wordpress.com/types-of-editorial/

4. Editorial of Criticism - This is somehow similar to editorial of argumentation but in this editorial, the editor presents both good and bad qualities of other issues. It discusses both sides despite he defends one of them.

Example: A JUNE 12 THOUGHT: RESPECT FLAG RITES

A flag ceremony, wherever it be a flag raising or a flag retreat is sacred. Therefore, it should be observed with all the solemnity and sacredness a Filipino citizen can muster. The National Anthem (Pambansang awit), like the national flag, should be treated with ceremonial respect. On this anniversary of the declaration of Independent in Kawit in 1898 it is perhaps timely to remind all and to behave during flag ceremonies. Sad to say, many students during the Monday morning flag raising ceremonies, instead of standing at attention while singing the National Anthem, and while reciting the Patriotic Fledge (Panatang Makabayan), move around play and have completely disregarding what‘s going on. It is for this reasons that we are calling the attention of all teachers, especially the social studies teachers to give more emphasis on teaching values, love of country, respect for the flag, veneration of heroes, and proper behavior during flag ceremonies In flag ceremonies cannot be held properly, why then do we hold them at all.

5. Editorial of Persuasion - The main focus is to persuade the readers.

Example: Why Exercise is Wise

"Come on!" your gym teacher bellows. "Just one more lap!"

"Why don't you head outside - it's a beautiful day, perfect for getting some exercise," your mom says.

"Well, he seems to be in great shape. Give him these heartworm pills once a month and take him out for lots of exercise," the vet says while looking over your new dog.

Exercise is a word you hear everywhere - and for good reason. Exercise is a very important part of life because it keeps the body in good shape (and not just in humans either, as the vet's comment shows). Doctors and researchers are finding evidence that regular exercise, along with other things that make up a healthy lifestyle, can prevent some diseases that occur later in life and lead to a longer, happier life in general.

Rewards and Benefits "So what? How does that affect me?" you may be thinking. Well, exercise doesn't just offer rewards when you're older - it offers rewards that begin right at this moment, too. Exercise is beneficial to every part of your body, including your brain. But probably the best place to start is your heart.

You most likely already know that the heart is a muscle - it's actually the strongest muscle in the human body. But did you know that just like other muscles, the heart likes (and needs) a good workout? You can provide it with an excellent workout in the form of aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise is any type of exercise that makes your muscles use oxygen. Because aerobic exercise is repetitive, it brings fresh oxygen into the muscles of the body over and over - making the heart muscle stronger (and sometimes a bit larger, as well). Aerobic exercise increases the number of blood cells in your blood, so your blood can carry more oxygen than before; it also helps the blood travel more efficiently through your blood vessels.

It's recommended that teens do some sort of aerobic exercise at least three times a week, for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Many teens who play team sports may do more than what's recommended - and that's great! The heart appreciates it and you'll be able to do more and more exercise without getting tired. Some team sports that are good for pouring on the oxygen are swimming, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, ice and roller hockey, and rowing.

But if you don't play team sports, don't worry; there are plenty of ways to get aerobic exercise on your own or with a few friends. Some awesome ways to get aerobically fit include biking, running, aerobics, swimming, dancing, in-line skating, cross-country skiing, hiking, and walking quickly. In fact, types of exercise that you can do on your own are easier to continue for years to come, so you can stay fit as you get older. http://center.dordt.edu/266.543units/bodsquad/persuasive_article.html

6. Editorial of Appreciation – It gives praise to the person who did admiring things; states the value of dead person who did good things, and have been a hero.

Example: THE GRAND OLD MEN OF CEBU September 9 marks the 106th birthday anniversary of a great man whose un measurable deeds can never fade but should always live in the memory of every Filipino. The man was Don Sergio Osmena sr., the Grand old Man of Cebu.

In his lifetime, President Osmena was the light that illuminated our darkened trail during the first days of the liberation, leading to our national enlightenment and freedom-the building of our Republic. It was he who continued the fight when his predecessor, President Quezon, failed to return to his beloved people.

President Osmena, in spite of wealth and power, was one of the humblest government officials and President that our country has ever had. As a man, he was real; as a friend, he was indispensable and true; as a leader, he was an example; as a citizen, he was most patriotic; and as a personality, he was dynamic and virtuous.

All that he was is now a shadow, but that same shadow stands as a standard with which we can realize our present state of being. Indeed, few are the men who live the life of Don Sergio Osmena. That our school was named after such a great yet humble hero is something every Osmenan should be proud of. http://journsociety01.wordpress.com/types-of-editorial/

7. Editorial for Special Occasion – This discusses about the importance of special occasions like Christmas, Araw ng Kalayaan, Buwan ng Wika, Araw ng mga Bayani and etc.

Example: VALENTINE IS..

When some students began decorating their rooms with Valentine trimmings, a critic asked, ―Is it necessary to celebrate Valentines‘ Day? Is not a good for nothing occasion like Christmas? Contrary to what the critic said, Valentine‘s Day is not just a froth and flower occasion devoid of any meaning at all. It has a distinct place and function in contemporary life; otherwise its observance would have been dropped after the Vatican had declared St. Valentine‘s Day. To them, the existence of the patron saint is immaterial. What is important is, that people still believe in the existence of love, love between lovers, love between children and their elders, love among men, and love between man and God. These kinds of love are universal. They are the ties that bind the world together to keep it from crumbling into hatred and wickedness. http://journsociety01.wordpress.com/types-of-editorial/

8. Editorial of Entertainment – The purpose of this editorial is to entertain. This is usually written in a informal, sometimes sentimental and usually brief.

Example:

Oscar Nominations: Who Was Snubbed, Who Got Lucky, and Who Was Really Snubbed Certain things enter into the collective culture, and it‘s very hard to shake them. So when a lot of people say ―Emma Thompson will be nominated for Saving Mr. Banks‖ for a performance that nobody really loves or ―Inside Llewyn Davis will be nominated because the Coens are never not nominated‖ for a film that most people hate, these things tend to stick. Even though they‘re mostly meritless declarations. So now I‘d like to look at this year‘s Oscar nominations and break down the people everyone thinks are snubbed and then talk about the people who actually got screwed. Best Picture Who People Think Got Snubbed: ―Inside Llewyn Davis‖ is the most frequently talked about as getting ―screwed‖ out of a Best Picture nomination, but why? The film is always described as a ―love it or hate it‖ film, nobody thinks it‘s one of the Coen Brother‘s best, and it wasn‘t shown any love from the guild awards. Did people think just the Coen name could propel this to the top of the pack? Best Director Who People Think Got Snubbed: The Coen Brothers, but again, why? Also, Paul Greengrass for Captain Phillips, even though this was a tough category and his direction may have been snare-drum tight but wasn‘t as innovative as some others that have been snubbed. Who Got Lucky: Alexander Payne for ―Nebraska.‖ I‘m sorry, but this nomination is just out of respect for his name more than he really deserved to be nominated over, say… Who Actually Got Snubbed: Spike Jonze for ―Her.‖ A romantic science-fiction film is an almost impossible thing to pull off, and Jonze does it without ever sacrificing his quirky, intelligent, or non- violent tendencies (there‘s not a killer robot or laser gun in sight). In fact, he‘s a perennial snubee who‘s never actually won this category before. But the real loser here is spontaneity, where are the wild card pics like last year‘s directors of ―Amour‖ or ―Beasts of the Southern Wild?‖ It would have been nice to see one crazy pic in there. Best Actor Who People Think Got Snubbed: Tom Hanks for ―Captain Philips.‖ I loved this performance, but it was a really competitive category this year and this performance just wasn‘t my favorite. Who Got Lucky: Bruce Dern for ―Nebraska.‖ Why pass up Redford for this performance? Who Actually Got Snubbed: Sure people are talking about Robert Redford‘s snub, but he really did get screwed. It‘s disgusting that he was left out because he didn‘t campaign as much as the others or because Leo is a bigger star right now. But I also would have loved to see Joaquin Phoenix nominated for ―Her,‖ and it‘s an equal shame he‘s not included. Best Actress Who People Think Got Snubbed: Emma Thompson for ―Saving Mr. Banks.‖ An unlikable character in a movie that most people are just lukewarm about. It really shouldn‘t have been that big a surprise. Who Got Lucky: Meryl Streep for August: Osage County. This is also an unlikable character in a movie that most people are just lukewarm about. This could have been an equally likely snub, and probably should have been. Who Actually Got Snubbed: Spontaneity. There‘s not one real wild card nominee in this category, and I would love to have seen Adele Exarchopoulos (Blue is the Warmest Color), Julie Delpy (Before Midnight), or Brie Larson (Short Term 12) nominated. Wouldn‘t a nomination for one of these have been a little more exciting than the 400th for Streep or Judi Dench? http://alabamaliberal.com/oscar-nominations-who-was-snubbed-who-got-lucky-and-who-was-really- snubbed/

9. Mood Editorial – This type of editorial usually talks about nature and it states philosophy.

Example: THE CHALLENGE OF 1994

Old year 1993 with knitted brown, limping and hungry, black-eyed by student demonstrations, social unrest, dirty, politics, criminality, kidnapping, and a revillion has just departed, leaving behind great problems to Youthful 1994. All around the country are tensions, miseries, and a starvation. Hunger stalks the land, as different kinds of diseases inflict the people.

The poor and the unfortunate stage the same old story. The power of political struggle and the growing strength of the NPA and Muslim rebels have crept even into the once peaceful barrios throughout the country, while countless of millions look up to the sky with hope for order, peace, and sobriety.

Now that the New Year is here, it is the time to take stock of and adjust ourselves to a brighter tomorrow. Let us stand firmly, for the future depends on how we make it. All that we do is only a matter of trials, struggles, and sacrifices. But above all, let us practice peace and love of God and of our fellowmen.

http://journsociety01.wordpress.com/types-of-editorial/ Pointers on Writing an Editorial

 Make the editorial interesting enough to read.  Organize the data into well-reasoned arguments, with each argument leading to a conclusion.  Pick a significant topic that has a current news angle and would interest readers.  Collect information and facts; include objective reporting; do research.  State your opinion briefly in the fashion of a thesis statement.  Explain the issue objectively as a reporter would and tell why this situation is important.  Give opposing viewpoint first with its quotations and facts.  Refute the other side and develop your case using facts, details, figures, quotations. Pick apart the other side's logic.  Concede a point of the opposition — they must have some good points you can acknowledge that would make you look rational.  Repeat key phrases to reinforce an idea into the reader's minds.  Give a realistic solution(s) to the problem that goes beyond common knowledge. Encourage critical thinking and pro-active reaction.  Never use first person pronouns because an editorial is not an individual‘s opinion alone. Writing an Editorial

1. Pick a topic wisely. Choose an issue that is currently making the headlines and would interest readers. 2. Collect information about your chosen topic by doing a research. 3. Define your agenda clearly. State your opinion in the structure of a thesis statement. 4. Explain the issue briefly and state its significance. 5. Build an argument and persuade the readers to join your side. 6. Strengthen your argument by using facts, details and quotations.
