Sports Writing Sports Writing Is the Most Popular Type of Journalistic Writing Sports Writing Sports writing is the most popular type of journalistic writing. It is a unique kind of news about different types of sports that is written like direct news, but usually written in action story. It is a combination of news reporting, editorial writing, and feature writing, the content of which are sports and athletics. Sports articles offers reader exciting insights and analysis about how a game transpires and even simulates, and reveals what happened throughout in a sporting event. Examples of a sports article: A. Adamson nips FEU for UAAP women‘s volleyball final 4 spot MANILA, Philippines — Adamson leaned on its tenacity to overcome Far Eastern University and gain the last berth in the UAAP season 76 women‘s volleyball semifinals on Wednesday. The Lady Falcons bucked a 1-1 deficit to oust the gritty Lady Tamaraws, 25-17, 23-25, 23-25, 25-13, 15-11, at the Arena in San Juan and leaned on Shiela Pineda in crunch time. ―We should‘ve pushed it more in the second and third set, where we had a problem with our first ball,‖ said head coach Sherwin Menses. ―It was a good thing we recovered in the fourth and players showed how tough they are.‖ Pineda, once again, proved how invaluable she is for Adamson by scoring half of her squad‘s last eight points in the final frame which broke the 8-all deadlock. The Lady Falcons‘ star spiker finished with 25 points, all but one from kills as she towed her squad to a final four appearance, which would be her last. Mayette Zapanta also came through in the fifth frame along with Amanda Villanueva and they combined for 26 points for the Adamson. Villanueva eventually nailed the clincher after a miscue from the referee prematurely gave the Lady Falcons the win in the previous play. It was a confidence-boosting win for Adamson, which faces Ateneo on Sunday in another knockout match in the step-ladder format. The Lady Tamaraws, after showing tremendous promise this season, will go back to the drawing board after falling short of making it to the top 4. FEU botched a 2-1 set lead as it allowed Adamson to go on a momentum-halting 25-13 fourth frame win. Bernadeth Pons, who is a cinch for rookie of the year award, finished with 16 points to lead the Lady Tamaraws in a losing effort. http://sports.inquirer.net/145728/adamson-nips-feu-for-uaap-womens-volleyball-final-4-spot B. San Beda wins 4th straight NCAA men‘s football title MANILA, Philippines — San Beda seized its fourth straight NCAA men‘s football championship after a 2-0 shutout of Arellano Monday at the ASCOM pitch in Taguig. Raffy Cabug, the league‘s MVP, fittingly opened up the scoring for the Red Booters in the ninth minute. San Beda, which went unbeaten in nine matches, doubled its lead in the 69th minute on a penalty kick off a costly foul by Arellano keeper Mark Baldo to cap its victory. The Chiefs couldn‘t do much with the Red Booters‘ stifiling defense. San Beda also came out aggressive that kept Arellano on its heels. With another crown in hand, San Beda tied former NCAA member La Salle for the most number of football titles in the seniors division with 21. Meanwhile, Lyceum edged College of St. Benilde, 1-0, to finish in third place. The Pirates‘ finish is their highest since joining the league in 2011. Arellano‘s Alvin Obero took home the recognition of being the Top Goalscorer in Season 89 while teammate Pino Cristituto was named Best Midfielder. San Beda‘s Jim Ashley Flores bagged the Best Striker award, Lyceum‘s Mandie Boy Lunag was the Best Defender and CSB‘s Bayan Ronilo was the Best Goalkeeper. http://sports.inquirer.net/145541/san-beda-wins-4th-straight-ncaa-mens-football-title C. FEU booters move close to UAAP double crown MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern U moved on the cusp of a rare UAAP title football double following contrasting victories by its men and women‘s teams at the start of their respective best-of- three finals series Thursday at FEU Diliman pitch. Coming out strong in extra time, the Tamaraws hacked out a 4-1 victory over University of the Philippines in the men‘s finals. The women‘s side leaned on Ina Araneta‘s late goal to subdue University of Santo Tomas, 1-0, in their series opener. The two FEU teams can clinch the titles with victories in Game 2 on Sunday. Striker Jess Melliza sparked the attack, scoring and setting up one of the Tamaraws‘ three goals in extra time. http://sports.inquirer.net/145815/feu-booters-move-close-to-uaap-double-crown Characteristics of Sports Writing 1. It answers the 5Ws and H questions – What? Who? When? Why? Where? How? 2. It contains exciting lead and describes the match. 3. It is full of adjectives. 4. It uses sports lingo and long sentences that cannot be found in writing direct news. Examples of Sports Lingo: 1. Volleyball Ace- It occurs when a player serves the ball and it goes over the net and lands on the opponent‘s court untouched by the other team. It also defined as a serve that makes it legally over the net and it is directed outside the court by an opposing player. Approach- This refers when a spiker quickly strides towards the net before they jump in the air for an attack. Attack block/ Block- This is when a defender tries to block a spike from the opposing team‘s attacking player before it crosses over the net. Bump ass/Forearm pass- This is a method of passing or setting the ball up to a teammate by joining the forearms together, extending your arms and bumping the ball of them in an underhand manner. Dig- This refers when a player prevents the ball from hitting the ground on their court when an opponent spiked or served the ball towards them. Joust- This occurs when the ball is falling directly on top of the net, two opposing players jump and push against the ball, trying to push it onto the other's side. Jump Serve- This is a type of overhead serve where the server throws the ball high into the air then makes a timed approach and makes contact with the ball sending over the net with a high speed. Kill- This is a spike, or attack that is not blocked or received by the defensive team therefore resulting in an immediate point for the offensive team Pancake- When a player digs the ball by extending his or her hand flat on the floor, palm facing down, letting the ball bounce off the back of the hand. Set- This refers to a skill in volleyball where an offensive player directs the ball to an area by the net so that a teammate can spike the ball into the opponent‘s court Six pack- This term is used to describe when a blocking player is hit in the face or head by an opponent‘s spike. Spike- This is a form of attack in volleyball when the ball is hit with force with the intention of it hitting the opponent‘s side of the court without the chance of it being defended http://www.sportslingo.com/volleyball-lingo-glossary/ 2. Basketball Air ball- This refers to when an shot attempted by an offensive player, that is not blocked by a defender, fails to at least hit the rim or the backboard. This shot attempt does not reset the shot clock, as the ball must at least hit the rim. All ball- This is term that a player uses as their defense when they have been called for a foul during a block attempt in basketball. The defensive player claims that they did not touch the offensive player and touched nothing but the ball and got a clean block. All day- When an offensive player is having a streaky game and has hit consecutive baskets in a row or is consistently making shots, it is said that they can do it all day. Alley oop- This is an offensive play in basketball where one player throws the ball up in the air near the basket and another offensive player grabs the ball in mid-air and scores, usually with a dunk. And one- A phrase used to describe when an offensive player is fouled while making a shooting attempt, makes the shot and is then granted free throw. Assist- A player is given an assist after they pass the ball to a teammate who then makes a field goal immediately after receiving the pass Backcourt violation- When an offensive player touches the ball in the backcourt, after it has already been brought into the front court and it hasn‘t been touched by a defensive player last. Ball fake- This refers to when the player with the ball misleads the defensive player into thinking he is going to attempt a shot or a pass. Ball hog- This is a term that is used to describe someone on a basketball team who handles that ball too often and does not like to pass the ball to his or her teammates. This type of behavior usually impacts the team negatively as the person who is considered the ball hog will take excessive difficult shots, even if they have teammates who better shot opportunities. Bank shot- This refers to when a player shoots a jump shot and it goes off the backboard first, without hitting the rim, before it goes into the basket.

They (whoare they?) teach you to write in arguments, to state your claim, to confine yourself to that eight-page essay — but they don’t tell you how to put yourself on the page. And nobody tells you how difficult, gut-wrenching, and exhausting it will be. That’s exactly what this whole process has been— difficult, gut-wrenching, exhausting beyond belief. No one could anticipate how much this extended process of emotional and theoretical digging would reveal about our identities, how important this catharsis would be, or how friggin’ hard! We want to put our heads down just writing this. But we wrote — and drew, and photoshopped, and edited — these pieces because it is hard, because we know that understanding the media is key not only to understanding society, but to changing it as well.

  • Concord Storm Basketball:Moves Without Ball
Concord Storm Basketball:Moves Without Ball Offensive basketball is played mostly with the ball in one of your teammate's hands. Four-Fifths of the time, you don't have the ball. What you do with this time has a direct relationship to your and the team's success. It all starts with your fundamental position. Your fundamental position is how you stand on the court. You must keep your body low, knees flexed, feet kept apart at shoulder's width, hands raised at chest level and close to the body. When you are in this position, your body is balanced. You are able to receive the ball and move in any direction. When quick movement is needed, your fundamental position keeps you set and ready to make them. This "basketball position", as some coaches call it, is one of the least understood fundamentals of basketball. Young players often don't fully understand its relationship to shooting and scoring. Unfortunately, they often neglect to work on their basketball position. The "perfect player", however, maintains his basketball position from the starting tip to the final buzzer. If a player is standing straight up, with his hands on his hips, he is not ready to make that split-second move. Correct positioning may not seem important; however, it is the foundation of your entire game. Foot Placement Basketball is a game of quick moves, cuts, and pivots. To make any of these moves, properly, you must start with good foot positioning. How and where your feet are positioned has great effect on how the rest of your body moves.

  • PRIVILEGE SPEECH of REP. PUNO REP. PUNO. Thank You, Mr
PRIVILEGE SPEECH OF REP. PUNO REP. PUNO. Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, my dear colleagues in the Sixteenth Congress, nothing gives us greater pleasure than to recognize a great performance when we see it. I rise today to recognize the Gilas Pilipinas national basketball team, which last night bagged the silver medal in the 27th FIBA Asia Championships, earning it a coveted slot to finally participatate among the world’s best in the upcoming FIBA World Championship in Madrid, Spain next year. Mr. Speaker, today is a glorious day for Philippine sports. Through the unpararelled team effort, strong determination and unwavering commitment of the Gilas Pilipinas, the Philippines was able to register the strongest finish yet in 27 years in the FIBA Asia Championships. Basketball- loving Filipinos all over the world have long believed that we can sustain, and even surpass this impressive showing not only because of our national team’s proven basketball skills and acumen but because finally, we now have the organization, teamwork and resolve to unite under one flag and country, toward the attainment of a common and shared goal. Today is a day of jubilation, Mr. Speaker, my dear colleagues, as we celebrate not just a victory on the basketball court, but of the triumph of the undying Filipino competitive spirit and unrelenting will to succeed. Several factors, events, and people came together and saw fruition in the years and months leading up and culminating in our national team’s inspiring performance from August 1 to 11, 2013. First of all, I salute the players, they were the ones who played hard, spent a lot of early mornings and late nights for practice and team meetings.
