He spent his childhood in the teachers' quarters of the schools where his parents taught. Unfortunately, when he was in grade 4 he lost his mother, and with that, his father had to retire from work. Fifteen years older than him, his elder sister became a teacher and his elder brother, who is ten years older than him, entered the Peradeniya Medical Faculty and is currently residing in Great Britain as a Specialist Physician. Educated at the village school up to grade 5, he studied at Mahinda College, Galle from grade 6 to GCE (O/L). Following in the footsteps of his elder brother who went to Ananda from Richmond College before him, he too entered Ananda College in 1975, and was preparing for the GCE (A/L) examination in Biology.
