  • Wealthy Business Families in Glasgow and Liverpool, 1870-1930 a DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY In Trade: Wealthy Business Families in Glasgow and Liverpool, 1870-1930 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of History By Emma Goldsmith EVANSTON, ILLINOIS December 2017 2 Abstract This dissertation provides an account of the richest people in Glasgow and Liverpool at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. It focuses on those in shipping, trade, and shipbuilding, who had global interests and amassed large fortunes. It examines the transition away from family business as managers took over, family successions altered, office spaces changed, and new business trips took hold. At the same time, the family itself underwent a shift away from endogamy as young people, particularly women, rebelled against the old way of arranging marriages. This dissertation addresses questions about gentrification, suburbanization, and the decline of civic leadership. It challenges the notion that businessmen aspired to become aristocrats. It follows family businessmen through the First World War, which upset their notions of efficiency, businesslike behaviour, and free trade, to the painful interwar years. This group, once proud leaders of Liverpool and Glasgow, assimilated into the national upper-middle class. This dissertation is rooted in the family papers left behind by these families, and follows their experiences of these turbulent and eventful years. 3 Acknowledgements This work would not have been possible without the advising of Deborah Cohen. Her inexhaustible willingness to comment on my writing and improve my ideas has shaped every part of this dissertation, and I owe her many thanks.

  • King James IV, Continental Diplomacy and the Guelders' War
JAMES P. WARD King James IV, Continental Diplomacy and the Guelders' War In Western Europe the years 1506-1515 were marked by confrontations between Denmark and the Baltic city of Lübeck, between Lübeck and Holland, and between Holland and the Duke of Guelders.1 The background to these struggles includes (very briefly) the resistance offered to successive kings of Denmark by their rebellious subjects in Sweden, who in their bid for independence were aided and abetted by Lübeck;2 Lübeck's opposition to the incursions into the Baltic Sea area of merchants and shipping interests from the Low Countries (mainly from Amsterdam) who were sympathetic to Denmark;3 and the duke of Guelders' attempts to recover the duchy which had effectively been lost a generation earlier by his father and grandfather to Burgundian-Habsburg domination.4 Each of the contending parties had powerful allies. Overriding all their quarrels was the dynastic struggle between the imperial house of Habsburg and the kings of France. On the basis of a treaty which had been made with Charles the Bold (1433-1477), last Valois Duke of Burgundy, King John of Denmark (1481-1513) called on the Habsburg authorities in the Low Countries for help against Sweden (see below). Lübeck allied with the Swedes tried to mobilize help from the other Wendic and Baltic cities which were joined in the Hanseatic League. 1 This is a revised part of the author's doctoral thesis `The Cities and States of Holland (1506-1515). A participative system of government under strain' (University of Leiden, 2001), based on sources in Holland concerning the regency of Margaret of Austria between the death of her brother Philip the Fair (1506) and the accession of her nephew, later Emperor Charles V, to Philip's titles (1515).

  • One Recipe, Seventeen Outcomes?
ONE RECIPE , SEVENTEEN OUTCOMES ? Exploring public finance policies and outcomes in the Low Countries, 1568-1795 Oscar Gelderblom and Joost Jonker Utrecht University [email protected] ; [email protected] First, very preliminary draft, 9 September 2010 Abstract We explore the history of public debt management in the Low Countries from the 16 th to the end of the 18 th century to answer why the Habsburg public debt system produce spectacular results in the northern provinces, but not in the southern ones. The answer lies partly in economic, partly in political circumstances. The revolt against Spain pushed the northern provinces into wresting fiscal autonomy from the cities. This institutional change enabled them to use economic growth and wealth accumulation to assume heavy tax and debt burdens in service of defending the Dutch Republic’s independence and prosperity. By contrast, the revolt reinforced local and provincial particularism in the Habsburg dominated south, resulting in low tax yields and low debts. INTRODUCTION Early modern rulers disliked debt and preferred to meet current expenditure from current income. They were fully aware that growing debts created a political risk in the form of a dependency on creditors constraining policy options. Yet a number of countries in pre-industrial Europe did leap the barrier set by current income to create a funded debt (Neal 2000). The usual explanation for this phenomenon is the rise of representative government, through which economic elites could control public 1 finance and secure prompt debt servicing (North and Weingast 1989; Dincecco 2009). This would appear to beg the question.

  • War and Identity in the Habsburg Netherlands, 1477–1559
CHAPTER SEVEN WAR AND IDENTITY IN THE HABSBURG NETHERLANDS, 1477–1559 Steven Gunn Th e nature of the available evidence has inevitably drawn studies of national identity in the Burgundian-Habsburg Low Countries towards social and cultural elites: chroniclers, legislators, political leaders, uni- versity students travelling to Italy, and even individual intellectuals like Erasmus. Such studies can illuminate the development of identities amongst the wider population by inference. Th ose who read the chron- icles, heard the ordinances proclaimed, were inspired by the leaders, or were taught by the students, presumably absorbed some of the ideas on the nature of their homeland. But it remains hard to test whether they did so. Within these limitations, these studies have reached valuable and nuanced conclusions. Th ey suggest that there was no agreed name for a nation inhabiting those lands; that the language of nationhood was far more oft en used of provinces or small groups of provinces than of any larger unit; and that provincial and dynastic loyalties were more powerful than any kind of national attachments, as we might expect from the comparatively rapid changes in the territorial composition of the Burgundian-Habsburg bloc. By the 1550s, terms suggestive of a single body politic including all the Habsburg provinces—le pays (rather than les pays) de pardeça; patrie, patria, or vaderlant; Belgium or Belgica—occur more frequently, which suggests an underlying change in attitudes. Th ey argue plausibly that high noblemen and princely bureaucrats thought more readily in terms of larger allegiances than did those with less to gain from the exercise of princely power, and that those in the more recently acquired provinces felt less part of a common enterprise than those in the core Burgundian territories.1 1 Karin Tilmans, ‘De ontwikkeling van een vaderland-begrip in de laat-middeleeuwse en vroeg-moderne geschiedschrijving van de Nederlanden’, in Vaderland.

  • Germany and the Coming of the French Wars of Religion: Confession, Identity, and Transnational Relations
Germany and the Coming of the French Wars of Religion: Confession, Identity, and Transnational Relations Jonas A. M. van Tol Doctor of Philosophy University of York History February 2016 Abstract From its inception, the French Wars of Religion was a European phenomenon. The internationality of the conflict is most clearly illustrated by the Protestant princes who engaged militarily in France between 1567 and 1569. Due to the historiographical convention of approaching the French Wars of Religion as a national event, studied almost entirely separate from the history of the German Reformation, its transnational dimension has largely been ignored or misinterpreted. Using ten German Protestant princes as a case study, this thesis investigates the variety of factors that shaped German understandings of the French Wars of Religion and by extension German involvement in France. The princes’ rich and international network of correspondence together with the many German-language pamphlets about the Wars in France provide an insight into the ways in which the conflict was explained, debated, and interpreted. Applying a transnational interpretive framework, this thesis unravels the complex interplay between the personal, local, national, and international influences that together formed an individual’s understanding of the Wars of Religion. These interpretations were rooted in the longstanding personal and cultural connections between France and the Rhineland and strongly influenced by French diplomacy and propaganda. Moreover, they were conditioned by one’s precise position in a number of key religious debates, most notably the question of Lutheran-Reformed relations. These understandings changed as a result of a number pivotal European events that took place in 1566 and 1567 and the conspiracy theories they inspired.

  • The Impact of Charles V's Wars on Society in the Low Countries. a Brief Exploration of the Theme
The impact of Charles V's wars on society in the Low Countries. A brief exploration of the theme Hans Cools Universidad de Leidem In the first half of the sixteenth century most inhabitants of the Low Countries must have experienced, in one way or another, the effects of warfare. Charles V, who niled the Netherlands from 1515 until 1555, was at war during nventy-three years of his reign. In seventeen of these war years, at least part of the miKtary operations took place within the Low Countries or cióse to its borders ^. In fact, no natural frontier protected the Netherlands from invasions by Charles's principal adversaries, the french kings Francis I and Henry 11. Charles of Egmond, duke of Gelderland, and later William von der Marck, duke of Cleves, JüHch and Berg, whose territories stretched along the valleys of the Lower Rhine and the Maas, constituted until 1543 useful allies of the French.
