Auction 92 Takes Place Online, Concluding on 5 December 2020 Auction 92 Takes place online, concluding on 5 December 2020 Given the continuing Covid-19 pandemic, members cannot attend a meeting in London, so this auction must again be run wholly on the internet, in stages: Stage 1: Email or post bids to Peter McGowan by Tuesday, 1 December 2020. Stage 2: On the next day, or as soon as possible thereafter, a table of highest bids will be posted on the Members Area page of the Society’s website. This will be kept updated as you repeatedly send in further bids by email. Put in your bids before 14.00 hours GMT on Saturday, 5 December 2020. Stage 3: For three hours after this time your bidding will be limited to increasing your existing bids. Final closure at 17.00 hours GMT. In order to secure an item, set your bid maximum sufficiently high. Avoid last minute bidding, which may result in bids being disregarded through failing to arrive in time. Stage 4: If unsold lots remain, send offers once a list of these is posted online. Please email or post bids to Peter McGowan, Nethergreen House, 9 The Green, Ruddington, Notts NG11 6DY E: [email protected] Ensure you include your current address and contact details. During Stages 2 and 3, check that the online bidding table is including your bids. If two bids of the same amount are received for a lot, then the bid received first takes precedence, so early bidding is desirable. Lots 1 to 239 are subject to reserves, either at the default value of 75% of the presale estimate or at a sum set by the seller (not exceeding the presale estimate). No bid will be accepted below the reserve, but you may, if you wish, send in bids at the 75% reserve (rounded up to the nearest pound). However, take into account that presale estimates are not a consistent guide to final price at auction, and may sometimes be greatly overbid. Lots 240 to 420 have no reserves but instead have minimum prices . Successful bidders will be asked to pay for their lots before despatch. Purchases to a combined value over £20 will be sent insured. For auction rules see www.bookplatesociety.org/documents/AuctionRules.pdf All items on sale are viewable at www.bookplatesociety.org/membersarea.htm £ 1 Seal Armorials: William Richard Crabbe, Devon, on steel by GG Palmer, F7182, Franks duplicate; Denham 20 Court Library (Swithinbank); William Harrison FSA, large F13920 and small F13921; Crossley, NIF. • Making Amusement the Vehicle of Instruction’: Key Developments in the Nursery Reading Market 1783-1900
1 ‘Making amusement the vehicle of instruction’: Key Developments in the Nursery Reading Market 1783-1900 PhD Thesis submitted by Lesley Jane Delaney UCL Department of English Literature and Language 2012 SIGNED DECLARATION 2 I, Lesley Jane Delaney confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’.

From his student days he had been an avid book collector. He formed relationships with antiquarian booksellers throughout the north of England. His interests were eclectic but focused on English literature of the 17th and 18th centuries. Several of my father’s books have survived in the present collection. During childhood I paid little attention to his books but in later years I too became a collector. During the war I was evacuated to the Lake District and my school in Keswick incorporated Greta Hall, where Coleridge lived with Robert Southey and his family. So from an early age the Lake Poets were a significant part of my life and a focus of my book collecting.

Holders of Ministerial Office in the Conservative Governments 1979-1997 Parliamentary Information List Standard Note: SN/PC/04657 Last updated: 11 March 2008 Author: Department of Information Services All efforts have been made to ensure the accuracy of this data. Nevertheless the complexity of Ministerial appointments, changes in the machinery of government and the very large number of Ministerial changes between 1979 and 1997 mean that there may be some omissions from this list. Where an individual was a Minister at the time of the May 1997 general election the end of his/her term of office has been given as 2 May. Finally, where possible the exact dates of service have been given although when this information was unavailable only the month is given. The Parliamentary Information List series covers various topics relating to Parliament; they include Bills, Committees, Constitution, Debates, Divisions, The House of Commons, Parliament and procedure. Also available: Research papers – impartial briefings on major bills and other topics of public and parliamentary concern, available as printed documents and on the Intranet and Internet. Standard notes – a selection of less formal briefings, often produced in response to frequently asked questions, are accessible via the Internet. Guides to Parliament – The House of Commons Information Office answers enquiries on the work, history and membership of the House of Commons. It also produces a range of publications about the House which are available for free in hard copy on request Education web site – a web site for children and schools with information and activities about Parliament. Any comments or corrections to the lists would be gratefully received and should be sent to: Parliamentary Information Lists Editor, Parliament & Constitution Centre, House of Commons, London SW1A OAA.

Keeping up with technology on the World Wide Web • The continuing influence ofSamuel Morris • Honor Roll ofDonors - 1995 A MAGAZINE FOR TAYLOR UNIVERSITY ALUMNI AND FRIENDS 1846*1996 SPRING 1996 PRECIS his issue of tlie Taylor Magazine is devoted to the first 50 years of Taylor's existence. Interestingly, I have just finished T reading The Year of Decision - 1846 by Bernard DeVoto. The coincidence is in some ways intentional because a Taylor schoolmate of mine from the 1950's, Dale Murphy, half jokingly recommended that I read the book as I was going to be making so many speeches during our sesquicentennial celebration. As a kind of hobby, I have over the years taken special notice of events concurrent with the college's founding in 1846. The opera Carman was first performed that year and in Germany a man named Bayer discovered the value of the world's most universal drug, aspirin.

"The Heraldry of the Preface. THE Hamiltons, so far as trustworthy evidence goes, cannot equal in descent either the Stewarts or Douglases, their history beginning about two hundred years later than that of the former, and one hundred years later than that of the latter ; still their antiquity is considerable. In the introduction to the first chapter I have dealt with the suggested earlier origin of the family. The Hamiltons were conspicuous in their loyalty to Queen Mary, and, judging by the number of marriages between members of the different branches, they were also loyal to their race. Throughout their history one hears little of the violent deeds which charac- terised the Stewarts and Douglases, and one may truthfully say the race has generally been a peaceful one.
