  • The Knucklehead Gospels
The Knucklehead Gospels A Simple Faith 2021 By Arnulfo D. Ayala 1 The Knucklehead Gospels A Simple Faith 2021 Foreword I was ordained a permanent deacon in the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Angelo, Texas in 2004, but I was introduced to prison ministry in the fall of 2000, working as a volunteer at a Kairos retreat at the Lynaugh Unit in Ft Stockton, Texas. From my first visit to the prison, I knew this is where God called me to serve. Many people have no knowledge of or experience with the prison system, so they have a great misconception of the individuals who reside behind those walls. Some may think that people in prison have no value and don’t deserve a second chance. I can firmly attest that in ministering to our incarcerated brothers and sisters, I have witnessed the power of God working through many of these gifted humans. It has been transformational for me and has helped me to deepen my relationship with Christ. I am blessed to be able to call them my brothers and sisters. I first met, Arnulfo, the author of this book in 2016 while serving in prison ministry for the Archdiocese of San Antonio. He, along with a core group of devoted Catholic men, are in the maximum-security prison. They have each had a profound experience at a Kolbe Catholic retreat and decided to dedicate their lives to Christ: praying, studying, and working tirelessly to be better men and to inspire their fellow inmates to do the same. I soon realized that Arnulfo, a self-confessed Knucklehead, had the talent, the faith, the experience, and the humility to help other incarcerated men find a way to walk in God’s light in this dark place.

I’ve written 3 songs and have 1 song "Movin’ On" that will be on iTunes very soon. Country music is my passion. But I enjoy other genres as well. Allen Rearick Hi everyone, my name is Allen Rearick, I’m 28, I like to do karaoke for fun and also like to workout and hangout with friends. I’m an assistant manager at Walmart and usually when I’m not working or hanging out with friends I go shopping or just drive around to see new places. Amber Hook Amber Hook, 29 years old, is a resident of Milesburg, PA. Presently, she is a hair stylist at SmartSyle Salon in the North Atherton WalMart. Amber has been singing since the young age of 2 years old. Growing up, Amber listened to Country music, and to this day she is still a fan. Country is her karaoke “go to”. She also enjoys a wide variety of other musical genres, including rock and pop. Amber's musical inspiration doesn't come from any one artist, but it comes from within her. “My musical inspiration comes from how I feel, and if I can relate to a song and put myself in it”. Amber enjoys singing because, in her words, “Most of the time I can't tell you how I feel, but I can sing you a song. Most of the time, it hits the nail on the head!” As to what she hopes to gain from being a part of the competition, Amber hopes to grow more as an artist, how to breathe better, and how to open up more.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Hip-hop, Streetdance, and the Remaking of the Global Filipino by Jeffrey Lorenzo Perillo Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Susan Leigh Foster, Committee Co-Chair Professor Victor Bascara, Committee Co-Chair New York-based African American, Latino, and Caribbean immigrant youth of the 1960s and early 1970s gave life to one of the world's major contemporary cultural movements: Hip-hop. Initially misunderstood as a faddish form of Black male musical expression, Hip-hop's cultural resistance practices were quickly recognized as four core elements (emceeing, turntablism, graffiti art, and b-boying/b-girling). In the global context, Hip-hop has generated scholarly discourse that points to either the cultural globalization of American Blackness or a "global village." My project interrupts this conversation and focuses on the unique, multi-site cultural history of Filipino identity as constituted through practitioners of Hip-Hop dance. My work argues that a community of Filipinos, situated in different geo-political loci—Berkeley, California, Honolulu, Hawai‘i, and Manila, Philippines—configure prevailing concepts of Hip-hop while remaking conditions of ! ii dispossession and displacement in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Exploring Digital Storytelling: Towards HIV and AIDS Knowledge Production in an Affluent Girls’ School Maureen Inge St John-Ward Exploring Digital Storytelling: Towards HIV and AIDS Knowledge Production in an Affluent Girls’ School Maureen Inge St John-Ward In fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg December 2014 DECLARATION I hereby declare that this whole dissertation, unless specifically indicated to the contrary, is my original work. Maureen Inge St John-Ward 1 December, 2014 i ABSTRACT This research project is a qualitative study that explores the use of the participatory visual arts-based method of digital storytelling in the context of addressing HIV and AIDS in a secondary school classroom in an independent school in South Africa. The study is located within the research area of how HIV and AIDS are understood in an affluent school in South Africa in the context of youth-as-knowledge-producers. It is concerned with Elite Studies since affluent schools are an understudied research site in South Africa. In this media- making project I build on the key concept of convergence within a participatory cultures framework, and multimodality as conceptualised by the New London Group (Kress, 2003; 2010). My participants, 70 Grade 10 girls from an independent girl’s school in KwaZulu- Natal, produced a digital story about their understanding of HIV and AIDS. Of the 70 stories, 15 form the core study group and are analysed in depth. Analysis of the content of the digital stories takes into account the responses of the producers, the texts themselves, and the responses of the audiences who viewed them.

"THE CASHTRO HOP PROJECT" HIP HOP MUSIC AND AN EXPLORATION OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF ARTISTIC SELF-IDENTITY by Christopher Joseph Cachia A Project presented to Ryerson and York Universities in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Program of Communication and Culture Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 2006 © Chris Cachia 2006 DECLARATION I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this project I authorize Ryerson University to lend this project to other institutions or individuals for the purpose of scholarly research. I further authorize Ryerson University to reproduce this project, in total or in part. at the request of other institutions or individuals for the purpose of scholarly research. II ABsTRACT While Hip Hop culture has regularly been legitimized within academia as a social phenomenon worthy of scholarly attention (witness the growing number of studies and disciplines now taking Hip Hop as object for analysis), this is the first Hip Hop-themed project being completed within the academy. Indeed, academic and critical considerations of one's own Hip Hop-based musical production is a novel venture; this project, as a fusion of theory with practice, has thus been undertaken so as to occupy that gap. The paper's specific concern is with how (independent) Hip Hop recording artists work to construct their own selves and identity (as formed primarily through lyrical content); the aim here is to explore Hip Hop music and the construction of artistic self· presentation. I therefore went about the task of creating my own album - my own Hip Hop themed musical product - in order to place myself in the unique position to examine it critically as cultural artifact, as well as to write commentary and (self-)analyses concerning various aspects of (my) identity formation.

Being near one who does it the way one would like to do it. This project identifies the “learning” dis- and re-orientation that can occur for both teachers and students by examining the characteristics of a few contemporary art practices and attempting to extrapolate from those works a character or ethos that allows individuals to behave in a liberated pedagogical way. Using four related –however independent –essays, this project attempts to highlight the ethics that have become more keenly visible in contemporary art forms such as performance art, collage, photography, and new projects in both popular music and television. I’m looking at examples in these art forms for two reasons. The first is because of their still developing and –unlike something like painting-practices – under-canonized and still developing theorization which up until now has left the working definitions of these newer practices ambiguous and brimming with possibilities.
