Spring Awakening About the Director Stafford Arima was nominated for an Olivier Award as Best Director for his West End production of Ragtime. He recently directed, Carrie (Off-Broadway), Allegiance (The Old Globe) and Bare (Off-Broadway). Sacramento Music Circus productions include: The King and I, Miss Saigon, Ragtime and A Little Night Music. Other works: Altar Boyz (Off-Broadway); Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (Stratford Shakespeare Festival), Total Eclipse (Toronto); The Secret Garden (World AIDS Day benefit concert, NYC);The Tin Pan Alley Rag (Off-Broadway); Bowfire (PBS television special); Candide (San Francisco Symphony); A Tribute to Sondheim (Boston Pops); Guys and Dolls (Paper Mill Playhouse); and Bright Lights, Big City (Prince Music Theater, PA). Now playing in the Studio COLOURS IN THE STORM The Tom Thomson Musical by Jim Betts COLOURS IN THE STORM is the story of Tom Thomson, one of Canada’s best loved Book & Lyrics by Steven Sater painters. Thomson’s landscapes of Algonquin Park - including "The West Wind", "The Jack Pine" and "Northern River" - are among the most famous paintings ever done in Canada. But Thomson is perhaps as famous for the controversy of his death as he is for the strength of his paintings. He died in mysterious circumstances in the waters of Music by Duncan Sheik Canoe Lake, and in the 75 years since his death there has been endless speculation about who may have murdered him. COLOURS IN THE STORM is partly concerned with the mysteries of Thomson’s death, but it is more concerned with the passions of his life. Spring Awakening Program
DRAMATURG’S NOTE Just as trees bud and flowers bloom, year after year more children grow into adult bodies. Also, year after year adult society pushes those young people to regulate their behavior and conform to social expectations, often without offering adequate instruction about the facts of life and providing space for exploration and self-expression. For the adults, it may seem easier to keep adolescents in ignorance and unsupported, rather than have difficult conversations about topics such as procreation, masturbation, abortion, homosexuality, physical and sexual abuse, and suicide. That was the situation in 1891 when German dramatist Frank Wedekind wrote Frühlings Erwachen (Spring’s Awakening or Spring Awakening), a play that was shocking in its defiance of conventional middle-class values. A poet and a cabaret performer, as well as a playwright, Wedekind experimented with form, anticipating the expressionist movement in theatre. Wedekind regularly challenged stuffy, bourgeois society with his choice of subject matter. A frank exploration of sexual themes is also central to Wedekind’s other best known plays, Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box. Sometimes referred to as the “Lulu plays” these works depict a woman who ascends to wealth and social prominence through her sexual liaisons with various men before descending into impoverished prostitution and an early death at the hands of Jack the Ripper. Wedekind had Spring Awakening published at his own expense, but the play was unproducible in 1891. It finally premiered in a production directed by Max Reinhardt in Berlin in 1906. For many years, productions of the play in various locations encountered local censorship that restricted performance or required revisions to the text. -

The Resistance - Duncan Sheik interview transcript Ma6 Conner: Duncan, I’d love to start here, where we start all of our interviews on The Resistance. And that’s with our source material from Steven Pressfield’s book, The War of Art. Let me just read this opening quote. And I’d love to get your response to it. Pressfield writes this: “Most of us have two lives: the life we live, and the unlived life within us. And between the two stands the resistance.” Duncan, I would just love to know for you, what does resistance look like, whether personal or professional. How are you wrestling with that? Duncan Sheik: That’s an amazing quote. I’ve been thinking about it a li7le bit this morning. There’s so many levels to it and layers to it and interpreta<ons to it that I’ve been sort of grappling with in the back of my mind. You know, on the face of it, the unlived life, just from a purely prac<cal and sort of from the standpoint of reality, the unlived life is really just the life that you have leC to live. So basically we’re talking about from this moment on. If, in the context of the unlived life that you might have lived in the past, I think pre7y much everybody has some regrets, big and small about the way they’ve handled certain things and gone about things. But of course, I try to live in a way where I have as few regrets as possible. -

Spring awakening Dramaturgy CaSebook Play by Frank Wedekind Adapted by Steven Sater Music by Duncan Sheik Clint Sides Jazmine Logan 1 Central to every happy and well-adjusted adult life has been the ability to live through the challenges and traumas of adolescence and young adulthood. The perils of awakening sexuality in each of ourselves brands us with our own individuality. This play honestly addresses feelings and events that connect us all. Themes of the Play This play resonates with young people today for the same reasons it did when written, over a century ago. The constant and never-ending challenge of teaching each new generation of children how to positively grow into their adult bodies, with healthy attitudes and a sound understanding of their own sexuality. Spring Awakening was written by an educator; a man who saw a need for openness and honesty about what was wrong with children’s educations in the Europe of the 19th century. Parents’ fears and expectations for their adolescent children were causing suffering and despair for the young; as much can be said about parents in America today. The Progress of a Century Where do parents in today’s world stand on sex education? How are we addressing the problems children face that lead them to despair and thoughts of suicide? Are parents and educators any more prepared to help the young deal with the problems and challenges of growing up in our modern, tech-heavy society which is changing so fast? Have we 2 grown up more comfortable with our own sexuality; more accepting of all the variations that naturally occur in such a large population? How the Play Impacts a Modern Audience These young actors present us with these questions; asking us all to examine honestly our own fears and doubts, our own uncertainties about raising children. -

This development opens new possibilities for musical theatre in both the stories told and ❖❖❖ the variety of musical styles and genres employed in expanding this uniquely American art form. BOEING-BOEING March 13 - April 18, 2010 Duncan has joined with the multi-talented Kyle Jarrow to tell an Old Globe Theatre intriguing story set in a lighthouse on the coast of Maine during World War II. It was a time of change for many and also a period ❖❖❖ of peril. As German U-boats patrol the shore, a young boy comes of age in the lighthouse that just may be haunted. From this ALIVE AND WELL premise, Duncan and Kyle have crafted an evocative piece of March 20 - April 25, 2010 theatre that I think will stay with you after the curtain falls.
