In the first sec- tion, multi-media services are discussed with regard to three aspects: applications, operational characteristics and service models. The second section focuses on subnetworks and bearers; mainly impairments caused by characteristics of the wireless environment. An overview of the Iris tactical bearers is provided as an example of a tactical IP environment. The last section looks at how IP can integrate these two elements i.e. multi-media services and impaired sub- network links. These three sections are unified by a common theme, quality of service, which runs in the background of the discussions. WJ~ HEWLETT a:~ PACKARD The Evolution ofIntelligent Networks to Mobile and Broadband-Computers in the Network, Now and Tomorrow Ray Crispin, Martin Sadler HP Laboratories Bristol HPL-95-68 June, 1995 Current Intelligent Network solutions will undergo considerable evolution to support the mobile and broadband networks of tomorrow. The present generation of Service Control Points, Home Location Registers and Intelligent Peripherals will give way to generic IN computing platforms which are capable of supporting a wide range of services. Requirements will develop over time, suggesting the need for highly adaptable computing solutions. Three key properties are needed to enable this adaptability: scalability, programmability, and modularity. This paper outlines the argument that a distributed, component oriented, approach will emerge to meet the needs of the future. Now and Tomorrow I,CURRENT SITUATION 1.1 Digital Switching Computer control of the telecommunications network started with the introduction of stored program digital switches in the seventies. Creating these systems has been, and continues to be, a very substantial engineering undertaking, with typical switches having 10-30M lines of code. Needless to say this poses huge software engineering problems, particularly with configuration management and regression testing. It is interesting to note that much of the complexity arises from the need to manage the operation ofthe switches. Typical, 80-90% ofthe code is for management and only 10-20% to control the switching. Also, because of diverse world market conditions, there is the need to accommodate variations giving rise to the need for configuration. -

Title: Communicating with Light: From Telephony to Cell Phones Revision: February 1, 2006 Authors: Jim Overhiser, Luat Vuong Appropriate Physics, Grades 9-12 Level: Abstract: This series of six station activities introduces the physics of transmitting "voice" information using electromagnetic signals or light. Students explore how light can be modulated to encode voice information using a simple version of Bell's original photophone. They observe the decrease of the intensity of open-air signals by increasing the distance between source and receiver, and learn the advantage of using materials with different indices of refraction to manipulate and guide light signals. Finally, students are introduced to the concept of bandwidth by using two different wavelengths of light to send two signals at the same time. Special Kit available on loan from CIPT lending library. WEEK 2 LEVEL 7 Alexander Graham Bell Alexander Graham Bell is the famous inventor of the telephone. Born in Scotland on March 3, 1847, he was the second son of Alexander and Eliza Bell. His father taught students the art of speaking clearly, or elocution, and his mother played the piano. Bell’s mother was almost deaf. His father’s career and his mother’s hearing impairment influenced the course of his career. He became a teacher of deaf people. As a child, Bell didn’t care for school, and he eventually dropped out. He did like to solve problems though. For example, when he was only 12, he invented a new farm implement. The tool removed the tiny husks from wheat grains. After the deaths of his two brothers from tuberculosis, Bell and his parents moved from Europe to Canada in 1870. They thought the climate there was healthier than in Scotland. A year later, Bell moved to the United States. He got a job teaching at the Boston School for Deaf Mutes. © 2019 Scholar Within, Inc. WEEK 2 LEVEL 7 One of his students was a 15-year-old named Mabel Hubbard. He was 10 years older than she was, but they fell in love and married in 1877. The Bells raised two daughters but lost two sons who both died as babies. Bell’s father-in-law, Gardiner Hubbard, knew Bell was interested in inventing things, so he asked him to improve the telegraph. Telegraph messages were tapped out with a machine using dots and dashes known as Morse code. -

In this environment, the 3GPP IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) represents the service provisioning platform of choice for SIP-based content delivery in mobile and fixed environments. However, in spite of the advanced status of research and specification in this field, few IMS-based services have been defined or deployed, mainly due to the fact that production or experimental IMS platforms are scarcely available for service validation and testing. This paper addresses the design and implementation through virtualization techniques of an IMS testbed intended for the functional validation of services, presenting the involved technologies, the undertaken implementation strategy, and the experiences and tests carried out in the first stages of its development.
