According to research compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 40% of heat-related fatalities in the U.S. were people over 65. CDC researchers also say seniors are more prone to heat stroke and heat-related stress because their bodies can’t adjust to sudden changes in temperature. The exhibit, “Black Market Underground Art/Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, Expression Art,” fea- tures vibrant and unique abstract art. “I believe there is a historic precedent set by the different artist and differ- ent art movements. Impressionism is a good starting point for me. Impressionism was a revolution in art that changed how art is perceived,” states Fish in his artist statement. Ardith uses a variety of materials and methods to create his distinctive art pieces, detailed in each painting’s description. Along with different dry- ing times of paints and the direction of the canvas for drip effects, Ardith employs the use of several agents to create interesting textures. These include, WD-40, tempera paint powder, glitter, asphalt emulsion, enamel, mineral spirits, house paint, construction colorants, and even nail polish. ou know how some memoirs use scientific advances to give an idea of an individual’s Y lifetime? “His father drove a horse and buggy and he lived to see a man on the moon.” For my life, the evolving telephone is the indicator of just how long I have been communicating with my fellow human beings. In middle school, I began talking to my friends over something called a “party line.” A party line was a phone line shared among neighbors. In our case, there were four families on the same line. When you wanted to make a call, you carefully lifted the receiver to make sure one of your neighbors wasn’t already talking. If so, you replaced the receiver, waited a few minutes and tried again. Line is clear, so you can make your call, always with the awareness that you can’t talk long because one of the other families might be waiting to use the line. You knew because you heard the slight click as some- one picked up their phone, and you then hurried your call to its conclusion. And you were always aware that someone might be listening in. Our nemesis was the Foote family; their heavy sighs when they heard our Marilyn Richardson Alger was honored to take a bow as her violin bow was decorated and officially retired voices blew our hair back. I thought sitting out on the deck and talking was the epitome of phonedom. Enter the cell phone. I do need my cell phone, and was horrified the first day I felt that pervasive sense of panic when I didn’t know where it was. But I am not married to it. I love to text and am more than pleased to have all my necessary numbers at my fingertips, but I don’t sleep with it or take it everywhere with me. I don’t always carry a bag and all my pants don’t have pockets. I use that archaic duo paper and pencil when I want to remember something. An alarm clock wakes me up and my camera hangs around my neck. And I am not going to cancel my l and line anytime soon. July Jamboree!

The only thing hotter than the hotrods at this year’s July Jamboree was the relentless sunshine. T hankfully, it didn’t stop the crowds on Cedar’s Main Street from enjoying a little car-coveting while peeking under the hoods and imagining getting behind the wheel of some very beautiful, antique and futuristic vehicles.
