MEDIA GUIDE & YEARBOOK 31 NORTHEASTERNNORTHEASTERN HUSKIES AND THE PROS Northeastern and the pros Northeastern University baseball has a great tradition of developing pros- pects, who later move on to play in the professional ranks. The most recent Husky added to the professional ranks is Ryan Quigley, drafted in the 22nd round by the Oakland Athletics. At NU, Quigley was second all-time in career strikeouts-per-nine innings, and ranks 10th all-time in strikeouts and fifth in saves. He went 3-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 25.1 innings pitched for Oakland’s Arizona League team in his first run as a professional. Northeastern’s highest-ever draft pick was Carlos Pena, who was taken 10th overall by the Texas Rangers in 1998 and is now the starting first base- man for the Tampa Bay Rays. His career year came in 2007 when he batted .282 with 46 homers and 121 RBI and was named AL Comeback Player of the Year and a Silver Slugger. He was a major part of the Rays’ World Series run in 2008, hitting 31 homers with 102 RBI, and collected the Gold Glove Award at first base. Another Husky success story last season was Luke Carlin, a catcher at NU from 2000-02. He was drafted in the 10th round by the in 2002 and worked his way through the minor leagues until realizing the ultimate dream in 2008: he was called up by the and played in 36 games.
