Mon Buddhist Architecture in Pakkret District, Nonthaburi Province, Thailand During Thonburi and Rattanakosin Periods (1767-1932)
MON BUDDHIST ARCHITECTURE IN PAKKRET DISTRICT, NONTHABURI PROVINCE, THAILAND DURING THONBURI AND RATTANAKOSIN PERIODS (1767-1932) Jirada Praebaisri* and Koompong Noobanjong Department of Industrial Education, Faculty of Industrial Education and Technology, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Bangkok 10520, Thailand *Corresponding author: [email protected] Received: October 3, 2018; Revised: February 22, 2019; Accepted: April 17, 2019 Abstract This research examines the characteristics of Mon Buddhist architecture during Thonburi and Rattanakosin periods (1767-1932) in Pakkret district. In conjunction with the oral histories acquired from the local residents, the study incorporates inquiries on historical narratives and documents, together with photographic and illustrative materials obtained from physical surveys of thirty religious structures for data collection. The textual investigations indicate that Mon people migrated to the Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya in large number during the 18th century, and established their settlements in and around Pakkret area. Located northwest of the present day Bangkok in Nonthaburi province, Pakkret developed into an important community of the Mon diasporas, possessing a well-organized local administration that contributed to its economic prosperity. Although the Mons was assimilated into the Siamese political structure, they were able to preserve most of their traditions and customs. At the same time, the productions of their cultural artifacts encompassed many Thai elements as well, as evident from Mon Buddhist temples and monasteries in Pakkret. The stylistic analyses of these structures further reveal the following findings. In recent years Myanmar has attained special eminence as the host for the Sixth Buddhist Council, held in Yangon (Rangoon) between 1954 and 1956, and as the source from which two of the major systems of Vipassana meditation have emanated out into the greater world: the tradition springing from the Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw of Thathana Yeiktha and that springing from Sayagyi U Ba Khin of the International Meditation Centre. This booklet is intended to offer a short history of Buddhism in Myanmar from its origins through the country's loss of independence to Great Britain in the late nineteenth century. I have not dealt with more recent history as this has already been well documented. To write an account of the development of a religion in any country is a delicate and demanding undertaking and one will never be quite satisfied with the result. This booklet does not pretend to be an academic work shedding new light on the subject. It is designed, rather, to provide the interested non-academic reader with a brief overview of the subject. The booklet has been written for the Buddhist Publication Society to complete its series of Wheel titles on the history of the Sasana in the main Theravada Buddhist countries. -

The Golden Letter of King Alaungphaya to King George II of Great Britain was inscribed into the Memory of the World Register in 2015. Its inclusion in MoW resulted from a coordinated submission by three countries in two continents, Germany, the United Kingdom and Myanmar, hinting at the exceptional status of this unique epistolary document. The synchronized move to gain recognition of the Golden Letter as a world - class piece of cultural heritage reflects outstanding good -will between institutions from three nations, but first of all the transnational character of the letter itself, the compl ex historical context of its production and ultimately, as the present article will also try to show, some of the forgotten links between monarchies and trading companies in the 18 th century. -

Far from the ‗heartland‘ yet passed from one major polity to another over the centuries, its pagodas and monasteries provided a physical and aesthetic means to asserted distance and accommodate ‗other‘. Some objects and ideas were imported; others grafted the new onto local forms to produce hybrid styles, while others are uniquely local.2 Is Dawei culture similarity or a new unification of the cultural diversity of Pyu, Bagan, Sri Lanka, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya? This report argues the contrary, that Dawei resilience in the face of continual threats sustained a local cultural personality that has survived until the present. The question is addressed by first classifying the sites of Dawei into four cultural zones and then discussing the extraordinary range of artefacts from these zones by material.3 This is preceded by a chronological summary to illustrate the often turbulent history and local chronicles. Dawei urban and cultural significance The earliest illustration of the process of accommodation and separation described above can be seen in the ‗Dawei Pyu‘ of the first millennium CE. 4 The majority of these come from the large site of Thagara5 [/tha ga ra/] founded in 754 CE (116 ME), with the only text source being the Dawei chronicles. -

The earliest accounts of Yangon are always associated with the Shwedagon Pagoda. The Shwedagon is the cultural lighthouse as well as a landmark of Myanmar. The ancient Myanmar planned this pagoda to attain visual supremacy and dominance over its environs. Conservation of such a historical heritage is to be regarded as our national concern. Some newly built buildings have become visual obstructions to the Shwedagon in the recent years. This situation calls for a scientific study and decisive actions in urban planning of Yangon. It is in need of strict regulations to preserve and protect visual axes of the Shwedagon. There has been a restriction for over sixstoreyed buildings in the preservation area of the Shwedagon according to the 1996 Yangon municipal bylaw. However, these are not supposed to meet the actual requirements of present situation. Proper recommendations for newly built buildings in the environs of the Shwedagon need to be considered from visual aspects of urban design.The first portion of this paper is to review and study the traditional practices of urban planning in comparison with present conditions in the immediate vicinity of the Shwedagon. The critical analysis is made from visual aspects of urban design. Secondly, individual axes of the Shwedagon are found out and identified based on the present and past conditions. -

Murphree University of Washington Abstract Imagining the Buddhist Ecumene in Myanmar: How Buddhist Paradigms Dictate Belonging in Contemporary Myanmar Daniel P. Murphree Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Walker Family Endowed Professor in History Laurie Sears Department of History This paper argues that the model of an “Ecumene” will aid external interpretation of the Myanmar political process, including the beliefs of its leaders and constituents, the Bamar. Myanmar as Ecumene better articulates Bama constructions of society, including governance, in that it resituates the political process as a Buddhist enterprise, shifting “Buddhist nationalism” to an imagined “Nation of Buddhists.” It also provides the rational for othering of religious minorities, such as the Muslim Rohingya or the Christian Chin. Utilizing ethnographic, historical, and textual source material, I show how the Bamar of Myanmar understand their relationship with the State, with one another, and with minority groups primarily through Buddhist modes of kingship and belonging. The right to rule is negotiated through the concept of “moral authority.” This dhamma sphere exists as a space to contest power legitimation, but requires the use of Buddhist textual and historical concepts provided in the dhammarāja or Cakkavattin model of Buddhist kingship, The Ten Virtues, the Jātakas, and the historical figures of Aśoka and Anawrahta.
