Organized and promoted by local paddling guide Brian Houston, the classic is a two-day event based at 'Tween Waters Inn. Islanders fared well in the 12-mile race Saturday, particularly in the senior class, which is a new division this year. Cass Beall took first place in kayaks under 18 feet, with a time of 2:15:44. Paul Robinson taking second place (2:19:56). Dan Welch took third in the open class for kayaks under 18 feet (2:05:22); Ray Antalick nabbed second in the master's division (2:17:07). In the women's master's division, kayaks under 18 feet, Deb Gleason paddled to second place (2:31:32), and Merri Murphy grabbed third (2:36:48). Then, in Sunday's six mile race, Keith Owens raced to thiid place in the master's division, kayaks under 16 feet (58:28); and Deb Gleason nailed first place in the women's master's division (1:06:10). In kayak competition for 16-18 foot boats, Marianne Ravenna picked up second place in the master's division (59:24), and Merri Murphy snared third place (1:01.24).
