OVERVIEW & KEY DEVELOPMENTS

• On 25 January, IOM held a handover ceremony of a clinic to the Department of Health in Daw Nyein Village, Pyapon Township, as well as in and . The Minister of Health and other officials from the District, Township, Villages and agencies attended this ceremony. The Ambassadors of Thailand and Singapore served as Guests of Honor.

• The TCG Periodic Review I was published in mid-December and is now being distributed. The TCG Periodic Review II has been postponed to June to give more opportunity for feedback and wider consultation. The TCG Periodic Review I hub presentation and consultation is planned for mid-February 2009 in both and English languages. At the same time, the TCG Post Nargis Recovery and Preparedness Plan (PONREPP) will also be launched in February, 2009.

• In consultation with other stakeholders working on Disaster Risk Reduction, ASEAN and OCHA in Pyapon are considering establishing a DRR Working Group that will facilitate information and knowledge-sharing on DRR towards long-term recovery.

• WFP and UNICEF, in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, are running a township-level art competition for school children on 29 January. The prize-giving ceremony will be held in March 2009.

• On 20 January, FAO in cooperation with the Department of Forestry, and facilitated by Mingalar Myanmar, conducted a workshop on “Community Forestry, Mangrove and Integrated Pest Management” in Pyapon. A total of 39 participants from Community-Based Organizations, INGOs and staff from Mingalar Myanmar attended the workshop.

• The humanitarian community is working with the Pyapon authorities to attend to the needs of the population (54 households) that moved to Ah Mar Town, from villages closer to the sea. So far there has been an encouraging response form the humanitarian community. Agencies are like Save the Children, IOM, UNHABITAT and UNHCR are willingly to provide assistance after they discuss with their headquarters. Assistance will be in the form of mosquito nets, water containers, tarpaulins, jerry cans, probably semi permanent shelter if suitable land can be provided by the authorities.

• Safe drinking water in the dry season remains a primary concern for most populations, and especially for villagers in the southern part of Pyapon.

SECTORAL UPDATE

In Pyapon Hub, 9 clusters (Food, Health & Nutrition & WASH, Livelihood & Agriculture, Logistics, Protection of Children & Women and Shelter), currently have active coordination mechanisms. In total, 27 agencies (6 UN agencies, 12 INGOs and 9 LNGOs) are present.

AGRICULTURE • Care Myanmar conducted an Integrated Pest Management Training on 13-14 January 2009, in cooperation with trainers from the Ministry of Agriculture Services. A total of 48 participants attended.

PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN • World Vision had a Child Protection coordination training in Geneva, Switzerland. The training feedback session was held on 22 January 2009. A total of 24 participants from Child Protection focussed agencies participated.

EDUCATION • Save the Children (SCF) finished reconstruction of five schools. They have also identified locations for, and started construction of, seven Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDC). • UNICEF has contracted sub contractors for the construction of a model school in Tha Main Htaw Auk Village in Pyapon.

FOOD • WFP is conducting Post Distribution Monitoring in three townships: , Pyapon and Dedaye as part of its food program. General food distribution has started for 72,000 beneficiaries. One of their implementing partners, Pact Myanmar, will extend to villages in Daw Nyein Village Tract. • Pact Myanmar has also started General Food Distribution for 19,000 beneficiaries in 23 villages in 5 village tracts.

HEALTH AND NUTRITION • UNICEF has started the distribution of 1000 clean delivery kits, kitchen utensils, cooking utensils, micro-nutrient sprinkles and tablets to health centres in Kyone Ka Don, Ah Mar, Ka Don Ka Ni, Taman, Kyone Tar, Kyet Pha Mwe Zaung, Tha Main Htaw, Kyone Kyaik, Daw Nyein and Nauk Mee Villages.. • Together with the District Medical Officer and Public Health Team, UNICEF visited Daw Nyein RHC and Pet Pyae Sub Rural Health Centres for monitoring and supervision of UNICEF- supported activities.

LIVELIHOODS • Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) in Kyaiklat is implementing a Cash for Work programme and renovating the road in Nat Sin Kyaung Su, Sah Pho Thaing Chaung and Kyone Tone Ta Man Villages this month. They also have plans for pond fencing in 18 Village Tracts. • According to MRCS (in Pyapon), renovation of village access roads/footpaths under Cash for Work Programme has been completed in Ah Zoke Kyi (Kyet Pha Mwe Zaung Village Tract), Ku Lar Hteik (Day Da Lu Village Tract), Pho Swar (Tha Leik Gyi Village Tract), Chaung Twin, Ah Char Ka Lay and Hmaw Bi Villages.

LOGISTICS • Two Mobile Storage Units are available now for any organisation that may have a need. They can contact WFP for further details.

SHELTER • IOM completed the construction of 107 framing shelter packages and 100 additional units are still under construction in Pyapon. • CARE’s programme to distribute Nipa Palm thatch (Da Ni) to 240 households and 7000 Kyats per households for shelter roofing is in progress.

WASH • SCF has started drilling to establish tube wells in Nauk Mee Village. • World Vision (WV) explored the use of a Water Purification Machine at Hta Lon Village of Gyo Wah Hta Lon Village Tract. They have also conducted a data assessment in new areas, namely Ward No. 15, 17 and 18. Additionally, WV evaluated the water quality, storage and latrines in these villages. They have plans to provide purified water for the villages in case of a water shortage. This will be in the form of a Water Purification Machine to be supplied as soon as possible. In an emergency situation, a Sky Hydrant (Water Purification System) may be considered.
