Unsur sosio seakar dengan sosial, yaitu yang berhubungan dengan masyarakat, kelompok-kelompok masyarakat, dan fungsi-fungsi kemasyarakatan. Jadi sosiolinguistik ialah studi atau pembahasan dari bahasa sehubungan dengan penutur bahasa itu sebagai anggota masyarakat (Nababan,1993:2). Kepentingan berbahasa dalam bersosialisasi dengan sesama manusia tersebut menimbulkan beberapa ilmu yang terkait, salah satunya adalah sosiolinguistik. Menurut Chaer dan Agustina dalam Sosiolinguitik Perkenalan Awal (2004:2), sosiolinguistik merupakan ilmu antardisiplin antara sosiologi dan linguistik, dua bidang ilmu empiris yang mempunyai kaitan sangat erat. Sosiologi adalah kajian yang objektif dan ilmiah mengenai manusia di dalam masyarakat, dan mengenai lembaga-lembaga, dan proses sosial yang ada di dalam masyarakat. Sedangkan linguistik adalah bidang ilmu yang mempelajari bahasa, atau bidang ilmu yang mengambil bahasa sebagai objek kajiannya. Dengan demikian, dapat dikatakan bahwa sosiolinguistik adalah bidang ilmu antardisiplin yang mempelajari bahasa dalam kaitannya dengan penggunaan bahasa itu di dalam masyarakat. 1 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Menurut Bram dan Dickey dalam Hasan (2001:75) Sosiolinguistik mengkhususkan kajiannya pada bagaimana bahasa berfungsi di tengah masyarakat dan berupaya menjelaskan kemampuan manusia menggunakan aturan-aturan berbahasa secara tepat dalam situasi-situasi yang bervariasi. Bahasa menjadi salah satu media yang paling penting dalam komunikasi baik secara lisan maupun tulisan. Masyarakat di dunia saat ini mempelajari berbagai bahasa mulai bahasa daerah, bahasa nasional hingga bahasa asing lainnya. Dengan berbahasa yang baik dan ditambah keahlian berbahasa asing akan memberikan penilaian yang bagus dari orang disekitar. Bahasa Inggris merupakan bahasa internasional yang hampir digunakan di seluruh dunia. Banyak penyanyi di dunia dari berbagai negara menuliskan lirik lagunya dengan mencampur bahasa Inggris kedalam bahasa negara mereka. Dengan menuliskan atau mencampur lirik lagu kedalam bahasa Inggris sehingga lagu tersebut mempunyai variasi bahasa dan mempunyai kesan yang unik. Nababan (1993:27) mengatakan bahwa orang yang berkebiasaan menggunakan dua bahasa dalam berinteraksi dengan orang lain ia disebut bilingualisme, sedangkan kemampuan menggunakan dua bahasa disebut bilingualitas. Bilingualisme membahas pola-pola penggunaan kedua bahasa yang bersangkutan, kekerapan penggunaan setiap bahasa itu, dan keadaan lingkungan (domain) bahasa

If systematic errors are ruled out in these measure- ments, then new physics extending the ΛCDM model will be required to resolve the tension. Therefore, different independent probes of H0 { such as the strong-lensing time-delay { are essential to confirm or resolve the tension. The measured time-delays between the lensed images of a background quasar constrain H0, as they depend on the absolute physical dis- tances in the lens configuration. I led a team from the STRong-lensing Insights into the Dark Energy Survey (STRIDES) collaboration to analyze the lens DES J0408-5354. I modeled the mass distribution of this lens using Hubble Space Telescope imaging, and combined it +2:7 −1 −1 with analyses from my collaborators to infer H0 = 74:2−3:0 km s Mpc with the highest precision (3.9 per cent) from a single lens to date.

(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological.

    Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.
