I learned this at City’s beekeeping workshop, which is held monthly and welcomes staff and students alike. We had the opportunity to visit the beehives, on the roof of one of the campus buildings. It was encouraging to witness the dedication of the beekeepers, whose work ensures the wellbeing of the bees and supports biodiversity. Saving the world’s endangered species with maths Mathematicians at City have created a new model, similar to one commonly found in the world of finance showing how to harvest species such as whales, bison, rhinos, birds and fish at an optimal rate, while making sure that the animals do not get wiped out by random environmental factors. As the hospital is visited by patients from across the island, I was exposed to a wide range of conditions and their treatments. When the family’s head, the Marquess of Northampton, moved the family away from the area at the turn of the sixteenth century, the wider Clerkenwell area was still largely rural. The area where the Square would later be established was flanked by St John Street and Goswell Road, major routes from the north to London’s historic centre and the River Thames. Butchers would carry out their work in Clerkenwell before disposing of waste material in the nearby River Fleet, which was still at surface level.
