Arrivée à l’aéroport O’Hare de Chicago à 15 h 29. Accueil et transfert en autocar de l’aéroport vers l’Hôtel Renaissance Chicago Downtown (4 ★) pour notre hébergement des trois prochaines nuits. Situé en plein cœur du célèbre « Loop » de Chicago, le Renaissance est proche de la Willis Tower, du Chicago Art Institute, du Millenium Park avec ses concerts et du quartier des théâtres. Soirée libre. Explorez l’histoire de celle que l’on surnomme la « Ville des vents », où l’élégance intemporelle se mêle au luxe moderne. Cette ville d’eau, construite au bord de l’immense lac Michigan avec la rivière Chicago comme colonne vertébrale sinueuse, est aussi une ville d’air, tournée vers le haut, avec d’immenses gratte-ciel qui furent construits à la suite d’un incendie qui détruisit tout le centre-ville en 1871. Depuis, elle est un vrai laboratoire d’architecture. De Burnham à Sullivan, maîtres de l’école de Chicago, des tenants de l’art déco ou du gothique, jusqu’aux plus brillants architectes contemporains, ils ont tous au moins une « œuvre » dans ce « musée » en plein air qu’est le centre-ville. En soirée, un spectacle facultatif vous sera proposé. Coût et spectacle à déterminer ultérieurement. Vue aérienne de Chicago 2019 — TOURNÉE MUSICALE • ORCHESTRE MÉTROPOLITAIN 3 MARDI JOUR 2 19 NOVEMBRE 2019 CHICAGO En matinée, nous ferons une visite guidée en autocar du centre-ville afin de nous familiariser avec cette métropole de près de 10 millions d’habitants comprenant 77 banlieues. Pendant quelques heures, nous découvrirons les nombreux charmes qu’offre Chicago tels que : le parc Millénium, la fontaine Buckingham, les superbes gratte-ciel dont le ¨Willis Tower¨ et le Hancock Tower ainsi que la promenade ¨Lake Shore¨ longeant le lac Michigan. Temps libre pour le dîner. Débutons notre découverte de la ville par la visite du Millenium Park. Ce parc devait initialement ouvrir ses portes en 2000 pour célébrer le nouveau millénaire mais les travaux ayant pris du retard, il fallut attendre 2004 pour découvrir les 100 000 m² de cette incroyable galerie d’art à ciel ouvert qui propose, gratuitement, de s’approprier quelques œuvres d’art contemporain remarquables dont le Cloud Gate et la Crown Fountain. Les deux tours d’une hauteur de 15 mètres de la Crown Fountain ont fait couler beaucoup d’encre au moment de leur construction, leurs détracteurs craignant pour l’esthétique du Millennium Park qui les accueille. Toujours sujette à polémiques, la fontaine-vidéo de Jaume Plensa est aujourd’hui une attraction majeure de la scène du « Public Art » de Chicago. Les enfants ne se lassent pas de jouer entre les jets d’eau que des projections géantes de visages d’habitants semblent cracher sur un bassin de granite noir très épuré. Comme un gros coquillage échoué au cœur du Millennium Park sur les rives du Michigan Lake, la salle de concert en plein air Jay Pritzker Pavilion élaboré par Frank Gehry, accueille des manifestations, spectacles, concerts tout au long de l’été. Son architecture, atypique, assure une acoustique remarquable. Nous nous rendrons par la suite au Grant Park qui est le plus grand parc du centre-ville de Chicago. Il renferme l’Art Institute of Chicago, l’un des plus grands musées du monde et sa collection remarquable d’art impressionniste ainsi que la plus importante fontaine du monde, la Buckingham Fountain. Construite dans les années 1920, la Buckingham Fountain demeure à ce jour l’une des plus grandes fontaines du monde. Son bassin contient près de 6 millions de litres d’eau et plus de 190 jets. Elle s’inspire de la fontaine de Latone dessinée par le Nôtre, dans le jardin de Versailles. La ville possède une architecture avant-gardiste ainsi que plusieurs gratte-ciel qui valent la peine d’être découverts. 2019 — TOURNÉE MUSICALE • ORCHESTRE MÉTROPOLITAIN 4 Comme plusieurs des plus hauts immeubles du monde sont situés ici, Chicago est une vitrine pour les chefs-d’œuvre modernes et les sites historiques créés par les plus grands architectes américains, dont Frank Lloyd Wright, Daniel Burnham et Louis Sullivan. L’observatoire du John Hancock Center, à 305 mètres du sol, propose l’un des plus beaux panoramas sur la ville. Par temps clair, on voit à plus de 100 kilomètres à la ronde au-delà des frontières de l’Illinois. La Willis Tower, généralement connue sous son ancienne appellation de « Sears Tower », est la Tour de tous les superlatifs : 108 étages, 442 mètres de haut (1451 pieds) ; le gratte-ciel est, lors de sa construction en 1973, le plus haut bâtiment de la planète. Il le restera durant 25 ans, délogeant de leur première place les tours du World Trade Center de New York. En 1998, la Sears Tower est dépassée par les Petronas Twin Towers de Kuala Lumpur, en Malaisie (451,9 m) et perd son titre de « Toit du monde » mais elle demeure à ce jour le plus haut gratte-ciel des États-Unis. Quelques-uns des bâtiments les plus emblématiques de la ville se situent directement sur les rives de la rivière Chicago, parmi lesquels the Trump International Hotel and Tower, le Wrigley Building, la Civic Opera House ou la gare Union Station. Culminant à 423 mètres (98 étages), la Trump Tower Chicago est l’un des derniers géants érigés au centre de Chicago. Lors de son inauguration en 2009, la tour devient le deuxième plus haut gratte-ciel des États-Unis après la Willis Tower (Sears Tower) et restait, en 2011, parmi les dix plus hauts bâtiments du monde. Elle porte le nom du milliardaire Donald Trump qui souhaitait initialement en faire le plus haut building de la planète mais dut revoir ses ambitions à la baisse après le choc suscité par les attaques du 11 septembre 2001. La Chicago River, ou rivière Chicago, étire ses 250 kilomètres du lac Michigan au centre-ville de Chicago avant de se perdre dans les campagnes de l’Illinois pour rejoindre, au sud-ouest, le géant Mississippi. Aussi fou que cela puisse paraître, Chicago n’a pas hésité à inverser le cours de ce fleuve au XIXe siècle pour des raisons sanitaires et – surtout – économiques : en inversant le courant, la rivière ne s’écoulerait non plus vers le lac Michigan mais dans le gigantesque fleuve Mississippi qui constitue alors une artère de communication vitale pour l’ensemble du continent nord-américain. Les perspectives économiques pour la ville de Chicago sont pleines de promesse et des travaux colossaux sont entrepris. Rapidement, la rivière inversée devient un trait d’union central entre la région des Grands Lacs et la vallée du Mississippi. Le lac Michigan, véritable mer intérieure, est aussi vaste que l’état de la Virginie. De ses rivages, le regard se perd au-delà de l’horizon. Quatre États américains bordent le lac, d’est en ouest : le Michigan, l’Indiana, l’Illinois et le Wisconsin. Au total, ce sont plus de 12 millions de personnes qui vivent sur ses rivages, principalement dans les mégapoles de Chicago (Illinois) et de Milwaukee (Wisconsin), les deux plus importantes villes autour du lac. 2019 — TOURNÉE MUSICALE • ORCHESTRE MÉTROPOLITAIN 5 Lors de notre promenade dans cette magnifique ville, nous aurons le plaisir d’y découvrir de nombreuses œuvres d’art. Comme Picasso ne lui a pas donné de nom, on ne sait pas vraiment comment l’appeler, cette statue monumentale qui trône depuis 1967 sur la Daley Plaza. Certains l’appellent « Chicago Picasso », d’autres plus simplement « The Picasso ». Dans les deux cas, l’identité de son concepteur est évidente : c’est bien Picasso qui expose ici, en plein air, une œuvre monumentale nichée au creux des gratte-ciels de Chicago : 15 mètres de haut, 162 tonnes. Érigée en 1984 dans le quartier du « Loop », en face du Chicago City Hall, la sculpture de fibre de verre de Jean Dubuffet s’expose en plein air. S’appuyant sur les techniques de l’art de rue, graffitis et tags, elle révèle une combinaison d’éléments composant la « bête debout » (standing beast) : un animal, un arbre et un portail. Monumentale, cette sculpture noire et blanche atteint presque neuf mètres et pèse plus de 10 tonnes. Nous compléterons notre visite de la ville sur la Michigan Avenue. Berceau de l’architecture moderne, la portion de Michigan Avenue surnommée « Magnificent Mile » s’étire au nord de la ville, de la Chicago River à Oak Street.
