Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019 Sports B1 Dora Cordova Bulldogs Blue Devils 27 15 Dora handles Blue Devils Bulldogs earn third straight victory over rival Cordova

By JEFFERY WINBORNE Daily Mountain Eagle CORDOVA — Despite Cordova getting momentum in the second half, Dora held on to defeat the Blue Devils at Hud- son-Kerby Field Friday night, 27-15, in the PrepZone Game of the Week. Dora put up 20 unanswered points in the first half, giving the Bulldogs a comfortable lead before Cordova began to fight back in the third quarter. “It’s always good to be 1-0, that’s our goal every week,” Dora head coach Bart Lockhart said after the game. “Our de- fense stayed on the field the whole night it felt like. We were either not moving the ball or scoring in one play and we left the defense hanging a lot. I thought they played well at times. Offensively, we never really got into rhythm. We made plays when we had to.” Two of Cordova’s first three drives ended in disaster, including a blocked punt on the opening drive of the game that ended with Brennan Davis picking it up to put the Bulldogs on the board. Two drives later, Jack Gable and Adam O’Rear mishandled a running back handoff that led to Dora getting the ball on the Blue Devil 39-yard line. They held the ‘Dogs to a missed field goal, but a personal foul gave Dora another chance that wouldn’t be wasted. Four plays later, Elijah Pruitt ran in from two yards out to go up 14-0. Despite the mistakes made, Coach Justin Jones said after the game that he is proud of the fight Cordova showed to come back in the second half. “We had what, four or five turnovers counting the kicking stuff? And we’re still right there with an opportunity to be successful,” Jones said. “It says a lot about our kids. And that’s part of the reason I came here. They said these kids and this community fights. These kids played hard and fought their guts out tonight and I’m proud of it. Now we just gotta correct those few things that are Daily Mountain Eagle photos by Jeff Johnsey going to help us make that step to put us in a position to be successful.” After forcing Dora to punt on the first Above, Dora’s Ikei possession of the third quarter, Cordova Hosea (22) rushes as put together a momentum-building, 12- play, 80-yard drive capped off by Kason Cordova’s Blaze Nix Smith running 13 yards for the first Blue (32) closes in during Devil touchdown of the night. their game Friday Despite the apparent swing in mo- night.
