.aIdo^/Y\(l A w^t 3^m /^an Diego State University was founded March 13 1897 as a training school for elementary school teachers. In 1921 it was reorganized int a four-year State Teachers' College and in 1935 it hecame San Diego State College to reflect the growth in clriculum from strictly teacher training. Again in 1971 the name was changed, this time to California State University, San Diego and after a long campaign by alumni the final name change to

San Diego State University was approved in 1973

The present location established in 1931* is a 275 acre campus located on the south mesa above Mission Valley not far from the

' 208 year old San Diego de Alcala, Califoimia s first mission.

The seven original campus buildings bear a strong resemblance to typical California missions with their open-faced bell towers, arches and covered passages. Recent campus additions retain elements of the mission style but add a modem, multi-story appearance.

Ei^ty-three percent of the 1,900 professors on the permanent teaching facility hold doctorates in their discipline.

Athletics: Member Western Athletic Conference (WAC)

Accreditation: Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The College of Business Administration at San Diego State University had its beginning with the establishment in 1921 of the Department of

Commerce. In 1935 the first A. B. degree in Liberal Arts with a major in Commerce was granted. The first separation in listing

Commerce and Economics classes came in 19^ and in 1951 it became the

Division of Business. The name again changed to the Division of

Business Administration in 1955* in 1958 application was submitted for accreditation to the American Association of Collegiate Schools of

Business and subsequently was granted. The name again was changed to the School of Business Administration and recently again to its cxorrent designation, The College of Business Administration. The ideological beginning of Delta Sigma Pi at San Diego State

University dates at least as early as 1958 to an accredidation report prepared by the faculty and administration of the Division of Business.

(APPENDIX a) .

Its recent beginnings were at the Intermountain Regional Conference hosted by Gamma Omega in October, 1978 when the possibility of a chapter at San Diego State was discussed between several alumni and Grand President Bill Tatum. Later that month Bill Tatum visited

Dean Hungate to insure his support. He was enthusiastically received and plans for a spring semester rush were made. Several weeks later

Dean Hungate was again visited this time tsy Executive Director

Ben Wolferberger. Again, the Dean insured his desire and support of a Delta Sigma Pi chapter at San Diego State University.

Preparations for a rush table began with the posting of signs furnished liy the Central Office and coiartesy of Gamma Omega chapter and Carl Brown. On Tuesday February 13th and Wednesday February l^th the table was set up and manned by Grand President Bill Tatum and

Gamma Omega alumni Greg Kasun. Over sixty interested students signed up. An introductory meeting held on Wednesday February l^th with a smaller than anticipated number in attendance. Plans were made for a follow up meeting ajid it was held on February 25th. Although the attendance at this meeting was again small, this group took the initiative to plan a second rush table and rush function, organize a setting, and get campus wide advertising. (Appendix A) .

The event a "kegger" party with beer supplied ly area aliomni was a success and over '^-O students attended and plans were made for a

fourth meeting. This meeting resulted in the election of officers:

Steve Koch President

Steve Kagel Vice-President

Lee Ho Treasijrer

Anne Demos Secretary

John Frederick Historian

Committees were established and possible projects were discussed.

Plans for futirce meetings to be held at Aztec Center on Sunday

to evenings at 5:30 pm were made and committees sent out Investigate

their projects.

Dear Mr. Wolfenberger:

On behalf of the College of Business Administration, I would like to offer full support in regard to Delta Sigma Pi.

I fully support the idea of having a national, all-major business fraternity on campus, and feel the fraternity will lead to professional growth and understanding of all business majors.

Presently, forty-five prople are pledging and there is a fund raiser started and a service project. I feel with this amount of interest and support, there is enough incentive to keep a chapter active.

Sincerely,

Gentlemen:

On behalf of the students and the faculty of the College of Business Administration at San Diego State University, I am asking for your support in starting a chapter on our campus.

At a recent orientation in which the Grand President, Mr. Tatum was present, ^3 students attended. The students are very enthused about the possibilities of having an established chapter. We had met on a few occasions and now need your support. I am willing to help start the chapter and serve in an advisory capacity. I am a Brother at Arizona State University and have enjoyed my relationship with Delta Sigma Pi. I you have any questions, please contact me at (71^) 463-l'*0O.

Dear Brothers,

It is my honor and privilege to submit to you this recommendation for the granting of a chapter charter to Sigma Delta at San Diego State University.

My involvement with the organizational efforts began with our original recruiting table and rush functions. This organization has done an outstanding job in establishing themselves in the necessary framework for a sucessful chapter. They, in a very short time, plajmed added inash functions, elected officers and appointed committee chairmenv and established professional, financial, service and social projects.

I feel that they have conducted themselves in a mature and professional manner and will perform admirably as our newest chapter of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi.

Board of Directors of Delta Sigma Pi c/o Mr. Ben H. Wolfenberger Executive Director International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi 330 South Campus Ave. Oxford, Ohio 45056

Dear Brothers,

Recommending to you the granting of a chapter charter to Sigma Delta at San Diego State University is one of the most personsuLly rewarding events of my association with Delta Sigma Pi for I have seen a tremendous growth of enthusiasm and commitment to ovac fraternity ideals. It is one thing to join a chapter that is established and "inherit" this commitment, but this group has developed it from within. Watching this happen has been to me an affirmation of the value of our fraternity goals and objectives

The ability of Sigma Delta to survive as an organization is fact. They have, In a very short period of time, organized themselves and conducted, sucessfully the necessary activities for survival. Their ability to survive as a fraternity can not be as easily, but it also is there.

This chapter will have strong support from the faculty, the administration and from alumni to aid in its development. Its leadership is strong and student Interest is growing.

Victor Hugo said, "There is nothing so powerfiil in the world as an idea whose time has come." The time has come for Delta Sigma Pi at San Diego State University

I look forward to my continued association with a fine group of students and an outstanding chapter.

is need for a full-time position allocation for the Director ofI^erethe Bureau of Business Research, This position is presently tilled by released time from teaching duties. New policy in regard to research m the State Colleges has been formulated which will permit position allocations for research. It is hoped that this will enable the Division of Business Administration to have more time allocated for research positions.

The Division of Business Administration also needs additional honor societies, such as Beta Gamma Sigma, and Delta Sigma Pi, The college as a whole would receive more recognition if it had a chapter of Phi Beta Pi Kappa, Kappa Pi, ^fortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa, and other honorary societies.

There is a need for departmental secretaries to relieve the extra load which heavy is being carried by the two secretaries which service t^ entire Division of Business Administration.
