Mohamed Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi Lime shells and live clams are distributed in large quantities in the backwaters and estuaries of Kerala. Vembanad, the largest lake of Kerala, also holds a vast resource of lime shells and live clam, comprising several species. The major species that account for the clam fishery of Vembanad Lake is the black clam Villorita cyprinoides. The lime shells that contribute to the fishery are broadly classified as the ‘white shells’ and the ‘black shells’. The so-called ‘white shells’ are sub-soil deposits of fossilized shells and are known to extend upto 7 feet below the lake bottom. The black shells are obtained from the living population of V. cyprinoides, which contribute more than 90% of the clams from this lake. The lime shell is mainly used for the manufacture of cement, calcium carbide and sand lime bricks. They are also used for lime burning, for construction, in paddy field / fish farms for neutralizing acid soil and as slaked lime. This is used as a raw material for the manufacture of distemper, glass, rayon, paper and sugar. STAGE TECHNIQUES AND THEATRE EFFECTS AS ADOPTED IN WESTERN THEATREAND MODERN MALAYALAM THEATRE: A BRIEF ANALYSIS DR. S. CHELLIAH, M.A, Ph. D; Professor, Head and Chairperson, School of English & Foreign languages & School of Indian Languages, Department of English & Comparative Literature Madurai Kamaraj University Madurai-21(TN)-INDIA This paper attempts to examine the stage techniques and theatre effects as adopted both in Western Theatre and modern Malayalam Theatre tracing the growth of the modern theatre of the West beginning with the Norveigian playwright Henrik Ibsen and the birth of movements like absurdism, symbolism, expressionism, impression and existentialism and theatre formations like Theatre of Complicate, theatre debre, Theatre of Cruelty, Theatre of Panic, Theatre of Silence, Theatre of Absurd and also Epic Theatre with a mention of the plays of Shakespeare and Kalidasa. It neatly shows how the stage techniques mark both the Western modern Malayalam plays and these characteristic features distinguish them both from the conventional plays. Love and Marriage Across Communal Barriers: A Note on Hindu-Muslim Relationship in Three Malayalam Novels K. AYYAPPA PANIKER If marriages were made in heaven, the humans would not have much work to do in this world. But fornmately or unfortunately marriages continue to be a matter of grave concern not only for individuals before, during, and/ or after matrimony, but also for social and religious groups. Marriages do create problems, but many look upon them as capable of solving problems too. To the poet's saying about the course of true love, we might add that there are forces that do not allow the smooth running of the course of true love. Yet those who believe in love as a panacea for all personal and social ills recommend it as a sure means of achieving social and religious integration across caste and communal barriers. In a poem written against the backdrop of the 1921 Moplah Rebellion in Malabar, the Malayalam poet Kumaran Asan presents a futuristic Brahmin-Chandala or Nambudiri-Pulaya marriage. To him this was advaita in practice, although in that poem this vision of unity is not extended to the Muslims. In Malayalam fi ction, however, the theme of love and marriage between Hindus and Muslims keeps recurring, although portrayals of the successful working of inter-communal marriages are very rare. This article tries to focus on three novels in Malayalam in which this theme of Hindu-Muslim relationship is presented either as the pivotal or as a minor concern. In all the three cases love flourishes, but marriage is forestalled by unfavourable circumstances. -

NavaJyoti, International Journal of Multi-Disciplinary Research Volume 1, Issue 1, August 2016 Resisting Discriminations: An Analysis of Selected works from Contemporary Malayalam Dalit Poetry Reshma K 1 Assistant Professor, Dept. of English, St. Aloysius College, Elthuruth, India ABSTRACT Dalit Sahitya has a voice of anguish and anger. It protests against social injustice, inequality, cruelty and economic exploitation based on caste and class. The primary motive of Dalit literature, especially poetry, is the liberation of Dalits. This paper focuses on contemporary Dalit poets in Malayalam, Raghavan Atholi, S. Joseph and G. Sashi Madhuraveli, who use their poetry to resist, in a variety of ways their continuing marginalization and discrimination. The poems are a bitter comment on predicament of the Dalits who still live in poverty, hunger, the problems of their colour, race, social status and their names. Keywords: Dalit poetry, resistance, contemporary Malayalam poetry, contemporary Dalit literature Dalit is described as members of scheduled castes and tribes, neo-Buddhists, the working people, landless and poor peasants, women and all those who are exploited politically, economically and in the name of religion (Omvedt 72). B. R. Ambedkar was one of the first leaders who strived for these counter hegemonic groups. He was the first Dalit to obtain a college education in India. All his struggles helped Dalits to come forward. He raised his voice to eradicate untouchability, caste discrimination, non-class type oppressions and women oppressions. All these ‘Ambedkarite’ thoughts formed a hope for the oppressed classes. These counter hegemonic groups resist through literature. Sentiments, hankers and the struggles of the suppressed is portrayed in Dalit literature. -

Vallathol appeared Sanskrit Sahitya, SSUS, Kalady, on the literary science at a time when Modern Malayalam Poetry was in its infancy. Sanskrit Kerala, India norms in literary composition controlled the literary field, and poetry in Malayalam was only a shadow of what poetry in Sanskrit was. Himself nurtured in the Sanskrit tradition which his early compositions in the Sanskrit form. The poet in company with his two illustrious compeers Ullur and A¿an. Soon made Malayalam poetry with his well known lyrical piece in [1] Dravidian metre a thing of the Kerala Soil . Poetry in Malayalam soon ceased to be a Kerala off shoot of Sanskrit literature and developed with a new secular content and native idiom and [2] form . Vallathol entered to the world of literature through singing Sanskrit Muktakas. He has also written a few works in Sanskrit such as Mat¤viyoga in 21 verses, P¡rvatip¡d¡dike¿astava, K¤snastava and Tapatisamvara¸a. Triy¡ma and Saml¡papura written in collaboration with [3] Vell¡na¿¿ery V¡sunni Mussat . Vallathol was a prodigious writer and author of over eighty works of which ‘Citrayogam’ a mah¡k¡vya, Sahitya Manjari in 10 volumes. -

Exploitation, harassment, physical and mental torture are a daily thing in the life of most of the women in India. Though one section boosts about advancement and improved life style of Indian women, there is the other section that is even denied fundamental rights and is leading a dilapidated life. Discrimination against women can be seen from the womb as the female foetus are aborted, education has been denied for them and forced to act as slaves in their own houses as well as in the houses of their in-laws. Women have to suffer for dowry, which may lead to suicide or murder. Women have been treated as an object of luxury and lust. In our patriarchal society, male domination has reduced them to nonentity and have been bartered, sold and used as stepping stones for the so-called success that male race enjoys. -

Conflicting Statements about a South Indian Deity Gilles Tarabout /p.454/ This essay aims at discussing conflicting representations of a South Indian deity, Cāttan (or Chathan, according to its popular rendition in English). Well known throughout South India for its magical powers, Cāttan is particularly invoked in Kerala. There exist regional variations, and I shall focus my study on observations and discussions I had during two ethnographic fieldworks limited to the Thrissur district in 1991 and 1994, complemented by various published materials.1 I may have missed recent developments and I am quite unaware of the corresponding traditions in the former Malabar district; it is also clear that another specific study would be required to dwell upon how the media have recently developed their own treatment of Cāttan.
