Rabindranath Tagore, Poems, Visva-Bharati, 1942 Abstract Nursing Politics and the Body in First World War Life-Writing This thesis examines the diaries and retrospective memoirs of trained and volunteer Anglophone nurses of the First World War. In the chapters that follow, I read their published and unpublished (from archival sources) writings to analyses their political affiliations for volunteering in war-work, and offer an affective reading of representations of bodies in their writings. The thesis is rooted in the genre of Life-Writing and it draws on a cultural and emotional history of war, as well as a Medical Humanities approach. The thesis begins by arguing that Florence Nightingale was the author of the genre of the war nurse’s life-writing. It reads her personal writings during her training at Kaiserswerth and during the Crimean War to trace the legacy and influence of her cultural image among the nurses of the First World War. The second chapter then analyses the motivations of nurses to volunteer for the First World War and reveals the various ‘kinds’ of the war nurse: the patriotic, the romantic, the pacifist, and the feminist. It reads memoirs published during and after the War to demonstrate that the reasons nurses volunteered to serve in the War were myriad and complicated and should be looked at from positions of “inferiority complex” and opportunity to finally participate in public life and actively contribute to the war effort from which they had been barred because of their gender. Both metaphorically and physically, the nurses dwelt in no man’s land: barred from fighting, and distinct from the Home Front, their work bridged the gap between these two fronts. The hospitals where they worked were transformed into “second battlefields”, and in the third chapter, I examine the effect this other fighting has on their own bodies. The chapter reads how they represent their own bodies in ink as they counter the shock of actual bodily contact with wounded, vulnerable, naked male bodies and how they embed touch and knowledge within the subtext of desire. It then analyses the long-lasting effects of this work on their bodies and minds, by reading instances of physical breakdown, sicknesses, and war neuroses in the writings of the nurses Moving on from their own bodies, the thesis then considers the representations of the wounded bodies of the soldiers in the writings of the nurses. The fourth chapter draws on the grotesque and Foucauldian gaze as a means of reading the representations of mutilated bodies, faces, and hideous wounds of the soldiers, ultimately offering an affective reading of the helplessness faced by the nurses witnessing physical pain experienced by the soldiers. It considers the question of how the nurses looked at mutilated, disfigured, dead bodies, and represented the full range of emotions and experiences arising out of that viewing. The final chapter of the thesis examines the encounter of the nurses with the body of the wounded colonised soldier. It close-reads the removal of nurses from British hospitals treating Indian soldiers, through the intersections of gender, race, and class, laying bare fears of miscegenation, eugenics, and degeneracy. It then reads writings by British and Australian nurses in France, Mesopotamia and India, to lay bare an infantilising attitude in their treatment of their non-white patients, and racial discrimination in their administration of medical care. He has always been there for me, and now thousands of miles away, still continues to be interested in my work and reminds me to believe in myself. I have teased out several ideas with Ragna—a lot over Skype and emails—and I continue to think about the phenomenology of pain in the writings of the nurses, courtesy her. Less well known was her beloved brother Uilean Hamish McUistean, my grandfather, who served during World War I in Palestine and Egypt. Uilean had resigned his position in the Trinidad Constabulary in 1915 and enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant with the British West India Regiment. Photograph albums and other memorabilia from his time in Palestine reminded us of his war service. World War One therefore, although distant in time, was a current topic of conversation within the family during my childhood and beyond. The scale of the 1914 - 1918 war and the huge loss of life was well known and the topic was and is covered in the educational curricu- lum in Britain. Both Mairi and Uilean returned to their families, so many did not. Travelling through Belgium for the unveiling of a statue in Ypres to honour Elsie Knocker and Mairi's work and attending the nightly ceremony at the Menin Gate brought home to me even more so the sacrifice made by so many.

Among the many women thus mobilised was Vera Brittain (1893-1970), who would later become a prolific writer, and active feminist and pacifist. In the summer of 1915, after experiencing war work at a local hospital, Brittain interrupted her studies at Somerville College, Oxford to become a fulltime V AD (Voluntary Aid Detachment). A few months later, she signed up to work at a military hospital. Her diary records that she decided to take up nursing upon reading an appeal in the papers for women to offer their services (3 April 1915; Chronicle 176).

    The Cellar The The Cellar-House of Pervyse Cellar The Mairi Chisholm (1896 - 1981) and Elsie Knocker (1884-1978) edited by G.M. Mitton - - House of Pervyse of House Mairi Chisholm and Elsie Knocker were two British nurses and ambulance drivers whose heroic Pervyse of House efforts during World War I saved countless lives and earned them life-long honor. They were especially known for their determination to treat wounded soldiers on the front lines instead of transporting them at great risk to "safer" hospital facilities, even though many of their actions went directly contrary to official bureaucratic regulations. In November 1914, they decided to leave the corps and set up their own dressing nearby in Pervyse, north of Ypres, just one hundred yards from the trenches. Here, in a vacant cellar which they named the "Poste de Secours Anglais" ("British First Aid Post"), the two would spend the next 3 1/2 years aiding the wounded in the Belgian sector. Knocker gave most of the medical attention, while Chisholm transported the injured, often in terrible conditions and under fire, to a base hospital 15 miles Chisholm and Knocker away. No longer affiliated with the Belgian Red Cross, they were forced to raise their own funds. Chisholm and Knocker They arranged for the cellar to be reinforced with concrete and even have a steel door fitted, supplied by Harrods. Through sheer perseverance Knocker was able to arrange for the two of them to be officially seconded to the Belgian garrison stationed there. Equipped with cameras, both women photographed not only each other but also much of the suffering around them.

Outbreak of War Find this photograph at the start of the 1914-1918 section of the Timeline. What two reasons are given to explain why Britain declared war? Two reasons Britain declared war were that since 1839 the country had been bound by a treaty to guarantee Belgium neutrality. It also had a moral obligation to support France if attacked by Germany. © IWM (Q 81832) Britain’s own security would be seriously threatened if the French and Belgian coastlines were captured by the Germans. These reasons may provoke a wider discussion about Britain’s place in the world. The arms race between Britain and Germany may be suggested as another reason. Look closely at the photograph, how did people react? The photograph shows a scene outside Buckingham Palace following the declaration of war in August 1914. Use of photograph as historical evidence - Students may pick out the King addressing large crowd gathered and consider why people are waving their hats and arms in the air. Overall this can be interpreted as a photograph that shows support and enthusiasm towards the outbreak of the war. Why would somebody feel like this at the outbreak of war? Enthusiastic attitudes towards the outbreak of war existed due to patriotic feelings. Back at school you could discuss further the different reactions of people to the outbreak of the First World War.

She appointed him a literary executor, and he later became one of her authorised biographers. There were over 30 women from 17 different countries, if you count the Isle of Man as a separate country(!), coming from Africa, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, USA and of course Europe and the British Isles. We were a mix of Lay and Ordained, including Lay readers, Archdeacons and Deans and the head of the Mother’s Union for an African country and Bishops’ wives. That all contributed greatly to the success of the course as we learnt so much from one another and got to hear things that are not making the news.
