Dear Friends,

The disease of addiction continues to rear its ugly head, as evidenced by increased overdoses in 2016 and the onslaught of the opioid epidemic on our communities. Addiction is a terribly debilitating disease that does not discriminate against people, places or things. It does not care who you are, where you are, what you have or who you know. If it gets its grips on you, the only way to effectively deal with it is with help; it cannot be arrested or defeated alone.

Mariners Inn is a place where recovery begins for some and is a renewed beginning for others who have made the choice to come for help for the first time, or come back for help again. In either case, access to recovery and support services for the disease of addiction is paramount for a person who is suffering to have a chance at success. That is why it is truly a blessing to be able to share our wonderful accomplishments from fiscal year 2016 with our exceptionally supportive, loyal, mission-driven and compassionate stakeholders. Your belief in us and our mission is the cornerstone for our motivation to continue the forward motion that we’ve been fortunate enough to experience over the years.

In 2016 we embarked on a new initiative with the tremendous support of the McGregor Fund called “Recovery Housing”: a model that promotes uninterrupted aftercare services for men in the beginning stages of the recovery process who are still in need of foundational support to promote long-term sobriety and success. I am ecstatic to report that the implementation of Recovery Housing has been tremendously successful as evidenced by 100% capacity and utilization of services provided to our consumers by our exceptional staff.

We have also experienced the excitement that comes with the new development of the Little Caesars Arena near our building. Despite the dust, we have never wavered in relentlessly moving forward with treating the people we serve with dignity and respect among all of the construction and development in the area. We remain steadfast and committed to continuing to provide the services that enable us to help save lives. In fact, our passion for serving this community has never been stronger.

The construction of Little Caesars Arena and the development of Cass Park Village within the new District represent welcomed and admired transformation. We believe in and support forward progress as it relates to District Detroit; we also believe in and vehemently support the forward progress of people who have made the decision to combat the disease of addiction by enrolling in Mariners Inn for help.

The men we serve never shy away from taking the initiative to offer neighborhood support through volunteerism and role-modeling for the surrounding community. I work with and for an amazing group of people who believe in the reality of recovery. Just as the new District Detroit’s Cass Park Village and Little Caesars Arena represent progress from a mutually supported venture through public and private entities, Mariners Inn represents the same type of progress as a mutually beneficial partner willing and committed to continue to do its part to ensure the success of our neighborhood.

For 62 years in our current location we have been a cornerstone of stability, successfully providing treatment and recovery services to people whose lives have been negatively impacted by homelessness and the disease of addiction. Through hard work, dedication, mission-driven belief and the selfless support of all of you, we will continue to challenge ourselves to seek and achieve the desired outcome of helping to return men to the community clean and sober while helping to save families…One Father at a Time!

As always, I implore you to visit our website to find out how you can join us on this journey to help save lives. Thank you for believing in recovery; thank you for believing in us; and thank you for helping us carry out the mission.

S.H.E. (Supporting Health & Empowerment) works with young women (ages 14 -21) at a critical age to help them build self-esteem, develop life skills, and develop positive motivations so they are equipped with the tools to help them achieve their goals and avoid negative behaviors and the associated consequences.

We engage young women who are struggling with interpersonal relationships, education, and family issues – specifically homelessness and addiction – to empower them to make healthy choices. In our first year, we worked with eight young women, and we look forward to working with many more. Leadership (2015-2016 Fiscal Year)

Frank, 61, has had a long road to recovery. "I was tired of chancing my life,” he said. “The purpose of this place for me was to break old habits and make new ones.”

When Frank came to Mariners Inn in March 2016, he had to clean up and fight his spirit and his desire to use drugs, he said.

“I didn’t want to break the rules, I wanted to follow them,” Frank said. “All of the counselors were very fruitful in my recovery. I gained fruit from all of them.”

Everywhere you go, there are rules to follow, Frank said, and he had been breaking rules since he was 13. He didn’t want to live like that anymore.

“All of the people here want to help people like myself,” Frank said. “I appreciate Mariners Inn, it’s a place of love.”

Frank said that his counselor was a very inspirational person in keeping him focused. His thinking changed over time and the way he felt about himself also changed.

Frank is currently in Mariners Inn’s Recovery Housing and eventually, he’d like to go back to school.

“I’d like to give back and go to school to be a counselor,” he said. “I’m a people person. I’m a talker, but I’m learning to listen, because everyone has something to give.”

For those headed down a dark path, Frank said he’d tell them what happened to him. “It’s like seeing a ghost,” he said. “You don’t have to do that. You’re only going to gain loneliness, frustration and anger.”

Frank also said he would tell them to go to treatment at Mariners Inn. He said he does things now that he hasn’t before and his spirit is bubbly.

“I feel better,” he said. Frank loves to sing, write, lift weights to support his health, and eventually he’d like to play piano.

“Anything they ask me to do, I try and do it,” he said. “They saved my life. Now the new Frank can live.”
