Today, Accepted 19 December 2017 this question is especially important given the staggering number KEYWORDS of unarmed black women and men who have been killed by the American Political police. In this article, I explore the degree to which American Development; black politics; Political Development (APD) scholarship has underestimated the civil rights; law; social role of social movements to shift political and constitutional movements; Black Lives development. I then argue that studying APD through the lens of Matter Black Lives Matter highlights the need for a sustained engagement with state violence and social movements in analyses of political and constitutional development. -

FREYERMUTH 2010 Abstract Nina Simone was a prominent jazz musician of the late 1950s and 60s. Beyond her fame as a jazz musician, Nina Simone reached even greater status as a civil rights activist. Her music spoke to the hearts of hundreds of thousands in the black community who were struggling to rise above their status as a second-class citizen. Simone’s powerful anthems were a reminder that change was going to come. Nina Simone’s musical interpretation and approach was very unique because of her background as a classical pianist. Nina’s untrained vocal chops were a perfect blend of rough growl and smooth straight-tone, which provided an unquestionable feeling of heartache to the songs in her repertoire. Simone also had a knack for word painting, and the emotional climax in her songs is absolutely stunning. Nina Simone did not have a typical jazz style. Critics often described her as a “jazz-and-something-else-singer.” She moved effortlessly through genres, including gospel, blues, jazz, folk, classical, and even European classical. Probably her biggest mark, however, was on the genre of protest songs. Simone was one of the most outspoken and influential musicians throughout the civil rights movement. Her music spoke to the hundreds of thousands of African American men and women fighting for their rights during the 1960s. -

These are the opening words to one of the world’s most famous protest songs. Its music and lyrics were written by Abel Meeropol (pen name Lewis Allan), a Bronx public school teacher but are often attributed to Billie Holiday, who first sang Strange Fruit in 1939 at Café Society, New York’s first integrated nightclub. The film looks at the history of the anti-lynching campaign in the United States, the history of the song Strange Fruit and explores the impact of Strange Fruit today. Newscaster (00:00): ... for more on these protests and a look at the history of racism in the United States, I'm joined by American South historian, Maurice Hobson. Newscaster (00:08): Good evening to you. Many thanks for joining us on the program, let's take a step back and could you just put this into perspective for us? How do these protests that we're seeing that are gripping the U.S., that reverberated around the world, compare to past protests that racism in the United States? Maurice Hobson (00:29): Well, this is the thing with these protests. The issue surrounding this is that there's always been a tenuous relationship between black communities, African-American communities and the police. Maurice Hobson (00:41): The founding of the National Guard, particularly across the American South, was initially founded in the 1700s, to control populations, enslaved Africans on plantations. And so in many ways, the police have been used to really push the agenda of the United States in terms of the capitalistic way. And so as a result of this, what you're really witnessing here, are communities that are really angry because they've not had a piece of that pie. And so this has been an ongoing struggle. There's a long tradition of resistance and rebellion within the African-American community. Newscaster (01:24): An ongoing struggle indeed but why has this act of killing by a police officer, which is sadly not that rare in the U.S., sparked such massive protests this time around? Maurice Hobson (01:39): So the thing about it is that I think there are a series of events. -

Billie Holiday, “Strange Fruit” (1939) “Strange Fruit” was written by Abel Meeropol, a white English teacher from New York City, as a protest against the horrors of lynching. Lynching was a practice that involved mob-style execution without trial, most often by hanging, and almost exclusively of African Ameri- cans. Thousands of African Americans were lynched between the end of the Civil War and the 1960s. In spite of the efforts of anti-lynching crusaders such as Ida B. Wells beginning in the 1880s, lynching was never directly addressed by the federal government until the Justice for Lynching Act was passed on December 19, 2018, making lynching a federal crime. Jazz great Billie Holiday recorded “Strange Fruit” in 1939. Her recording company, Columbia Records, re- fused to release it, fearing the response in the South. So Holiday released the al- bum with the Commodore label, where it would go on to become her best-sell- ing record. With its harsh indictment of the Jim Crow south, the song enjoyed a revival during the Civil Rights movement, and has been covered by numerous artists in the years since. THE CASE FOR ABOLISHING ABSOLUTE PROSECUTORIAL IMMUNITY ON EQUAL PROTECTION GROUNDS Samantha M. Caspar* & Artem M. Joukov** The prosecutor has more control over life, liberty, and reputation than any other person in America. His discretion tremendous. While the prosecutor at his best is one of the most beneficent forces in our society, when he acts from malice or other base motives, he is one of the worst.1 The remarkable incarceration rate in the United States (which leads the world in per capita and absolute terms) has many costs, perhaps none greater than the imposition of punishment on the innocent by overzealous prosecutors. We can hope this happens only by chance: that prosecutors would follow their ethical duty to avoid prosecution where they see no probable cause or where they find a statute unconstitutional. This is especially true in the event of an emergency, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, when this hope proves unfounded, as it did for many during the pandemic, the prosecuted have little recourse against the prosecutors. Running head: LYNCHING 1 LYNCHING Jennie Gunn FNP, PhD Assistant Professor University of Mississippi Medical Center Oxford Campus Carroll Gunn, BA Graduate Student University of Mississippi Abstract A single word can bring forth a plethora of emotions. Such a word, lynching, appeared repeatedly in the news recently; its use offended many in the African American community and others. The purpose of this article was: to explore the history and current meaning of the word lynching; to determine why the concept should be examined at this point in time; to examine the meaning of lynching specifically to African Americans; and to create a discussion so that health care providers may reflect upon and understand the concept it calls forward to the African American community and others. In order to provide cultural care to clients, the health care provider is called upon to understand the culture of the client.
