Nel 1951 debutta a Baltimora ma lo si considera fiacco, dalle battute scontate e superate. Nel medesimo periodo incontra casualmente Hot Honey Harlow, una spogliarellista, e la sposa. Pressato dalla necessità di incontrare il grosso pubblico, ispirato da una spiccata sensibilità e da un umore caustico, egli finisce per farsi un nome aggredendo il pubblico e servendosi di un vocabolario greve, noto a tutti, ma proibito dal comune senso del pudore. A dirigerlo viene chiamato Bob Fosse , un regista particolare, con precedenti come ballerino e coreografo, abile tessitore di trame ambientate nel mondo dello spettacolo e fresco reduce da un Oscar per la miglior regia ottenuto con il film Cabaret. Fin dal primo momento Fosse sostiene che la versione cinematografica può avere un solo protagonista: Dustin Hofffman . Tanta determinazione non sembra destinata a buon fine perché l’attore è perplesso. Ha visto l’opera in teatro e non gli è piaciuta anche se ha molto apprezzato l’interpretazione di Cliff Gorman. In più ritiene che il personaggio di Lenny Bruc e non sia adatto alla sua recitazione. Per queste ragioni la sua prima risposta è un diniego deciso e apparentemente immodificabile, accompagnato dal suggerimento ai produttori di scritturare Cliff Gorman. Fosse però non si arrende. Senza Hoffman il film non si fa. Vinto da tanta insistenza e tenacia alla fine l’attore accetta. Nelle mani di Bob Fosse il testo teatrale rivisto dallo stesso autore Julian Barry viene innervato dalla suggestione delle immagini, spesso in dettaglio o in sequenze “anomale”, utilizzate come parte sostanziale della narrazione. Non è un caso che il film si apra con il dettaglio ravvicinato di una bocca, quasi una dichiarazione programmatica che la chiave del racconto della vicenda di Lenny Bruce è da cercare nella sua bocca, nella sua voce, nelle sue parole, terribili ed esaltanti al tempo stesso, capaci di regalargli fortuna e dannazione. Il personaggio è poi spezzettato dal ricordo di chi l’ha conosciuto, con salti temporali sottolineati dall’alternarsi di sequenze in cui è senza barba ad altre nelle quali è arruffato e barbuto, e finisce per ricomporsi soltanto nell’epilogo drammatico. A guidare la ricostruzione sono le testimonianze di persone che hanno partecipato, incrociato o anche soltanto sfiorato la sua vita e che grazie alla 3 suggestione del bianco e nero appaiono come i coreuti di una drammatica ricomposizione della memoria collettiva di un’epoca oltre che di un personaggio. Lenny , anzi la sua voce e la sua libertà, sono destinate a spegnersi nel grigiore di un’America chiusa in se stessa e nelle sue certezze, che cerca nella "caccia alle streghe" l’antidoto alle sue paure. La parola, vera protagonista del film, è la sua condanna e contemporaneamente la sua sola arma che alla fine vive quasi di vita propria e sembra incontrollabile perché non dipende più da chi la pronuncia ma dagli eventi che la circondano. Lo sottolinea bene Lenny quando dice «…è la repressione di una parola, che le da’ violenza, malvagità...» 4 Critica Lenny Bruce fu una persona controversa, un comico eccezionale, una figura atipica per i suoi anni. Un uomo che faceva dei tabù la sua virtù, della satira il suo stile di vita. Lenny Bruce uomo estroso e geniale, mal compreso e demonizzato fu un’icona; un prodotto che andava ben oltre la semplice comicità. Nel film diretto da Bob Fosse ed interpretato dal (quasi) sempre magistrale Dustin Hoffman, si ripercorre proprio la vita del cabarettista e comico di origini ebraiche Lenny Bruce . L’opera a metà fra il documentario ed il film drammatico è un prodotto che analizza a fondo l’ascesa al successo di un uomo fuori dal comune, l’ascesa ed il suo declino. Se da un lato il pubblico lo adora, dall’altro i mass media e la critica americana lo detestano. Armato di un umorismo corrosivo ed allo stesso tempo offensivo, con una spogliarellista tutto pepe come musa ispiratrice, Lenny passa dalle peggiori bettole di periferia ai più grandi cabaret di N.Y.C. Eppure, eppure, al di là del suo stile pungente, della battuta pronta e del sorriso a trentadue denti, si capisce che sul nostro grava un peso enorme. Nel profondo Lenny è triste, deluso, amareggiato perché se è vero che egli costringe il pubblico, il mondo dello spettacolo e tutta l’America a dargli ascolto, è anche vero che in pochissimi lo ascoltano davvero. Moltissimi sono più interessati al dopo show, ovvero agli arresti e alle denunce che colpiranno egli stesso. Si perché in cambio della fama, dell’adorazione, Lerry Bruce conquista un buon numero di nemici fra le istituzioni ed i piani alti della società. Ambientato nell’America degli anni ’60, il film risente dell’atmosfera “pura” e puritana di quegli anni. In un Paese che fa di tutto per salvare le apparenze, sempre attento a mostrarsi perfetto, una figura come quella del protagonista dell’opera firmata Bob Fosse viene accettata si ma mal volentieri. Il comico imposta le sue gag su argomenti delicati e poco spesso toccati. Si spazia così dalla morale alla politica, dalla religione cristiana a quella ebraica (mostrando una forte autoironia), fino ad arrivare ai personaggi di spicco della politica a stelle e strisce, alle malattie, alla segregazione razziale, e chi più ne ha più ne metta. Lenny , insomma, dice la sua su ogni cosa ed il suo fare lo porta al sentirsi sopra gli altri. Invincibile e sopra la legge, un moderno Icaro che si schianterà contro il conservatorismo e i dogmi di una Nazione in cambiamento. Probabilmente se fosse vissuto dieci anni più tardi, avrebbe avuto un’esistenza più o meno facilitata ma così non fu: il nostro subisce una vera e propria persecuzione, gli innumerevoli arresti lo portano più 5 volte nelle aule dei tribunali, i soggetti messi in scena subiscono le censure di ogni tipo. Lenny viene ostacolato in tutti i modi e le frequenti pressioni che subisce danneggiano gravemente la sua vita privata. La pellicola è meravigliosa, è stata nominata a sei premi oscar nel 1974, tra cui quella per il Miglior Film. E’ un dramma che lascia ampi spazi alla commedia ma le risate son sempre amare, è un film eccezionale con un Dustin Hoffman imperdibile. Da notare come nella versione italiana a dare la voce a Lenny sia Gigi Proietti, perfetto nel ruolo da doppiatore, riesce a dare un tono scanzonato ed allo stesso tempo drammatico al timbro del nostro. E’ un prodotto che vi consiglio caldamente. .^_^ “È la repressione di una parola che le dà violenza, forza, malvagità!” Ne era convinto Lenny Bruce , comico, cabarettista ed autore teatrale che scandalizzò l’America puritana e benpensante degli anni Sessanta. Nei suoi spettacoli discuteva apertamente di sesso, rapporti di coppia, religione, razzismo e integrazione sociale, ma il suo intento era dimostrare quanto la società americana fosse ipocrita e malata, incapace di riconoscere una qualsiasi forma di libertà di espressione. Personaggio scomodo, controverso e ostile verso le istituzioni, visse una rapida ascesa verso il successo costellata da un difficoltoso rapporto con la moglie Honey, da problemi giudiziari e arresti, e da una dipendenza dall’eroina che gli stroncò la vita a soli 40 anni.

    Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

    Dennis Bingham Lenny: (Auto-)biography, Black-and-White, and Juxtapositional Montage in Bob Fosse’s Hollywood Renaissance Biopic Abstract Bob Fosse directed Lenny (1974), about the profane American comedian Lenny Bruce, who died in 1966, at a time when he had won complete artistic control over his films. As an intermedial artist, with equal facility for the stage and movies, Fosse approached film editing with the rhythmic intricacy of his dance style. He developed a film style that eschewed conventional chronology, aiming for an atemporal juxtapositional montage closer to poetry and the live performing arts than the narrative causality and temporality of Hollywood cinema. Lenny is an intermedial biographical collage that straddles divergent narrative strands, subjectivities, mid-twentieth-century periods. It contrasts modes of black-and-white cinematography, making them forms into themselves. It tells a story (rather than the story, as biopics conventionally insist) of Lenny Bruce, an irreverent, iconoclastic standup comedian who ran afoul of American obscenity laws in the last years before the cultural revolution of the late sixties, even as he helped to change them.
