PHILIPPI FESTIVAL The second oldest Festival of Greece, after the Epidaurus Festival, is mostly held in the Ancient Theatre of Philippi, with many events happening also in other parts of the town. Since 1957 it attracts thousands of Greek and foreign lovers of theatre, music, dance and arts in general. TOBACCO MUSEUM In the not so distant past, Kavala was known as the “Tobacco Mecca”, with tobacco cultivation being an integral part of its history for over 150 years. The museum’s theme is dedicated to this era and includes objects and archival material related to tobacco production, its agricultural and commercial processing, the industrial tobacco products and tobacco samples. 1904 HOLIDAY SNAPS The exhibition in Skiathos presents for the first time the images that the distinguished British photographer Alexander Lamont Henderson took during his visit to Greece in the first months of 1904. His lens stayed away from the stereotypical images of the era and focused on documenting social life and everyday reality. Does Kavala inspire you? How? Of course it inspires me, otherwise I would not be able to do anything. The city of Kavala is marked, one could say, by the tobacco era. That was its golden age, the Inter-War Years. It was a cosmopolitan city, with the bittersweet essence of to- bacco. I walk around cities. You can inhale the energy of a city by aimlessly through it, walking without a purpose really, tak- ing a dog for a walk, where in this case the “dog” may be you, as you may not have a dog. Γιατί η «Οδύσσεια» μας δείχνει με τον “THE ODYSSEY” IS A FASCINATING EPIC, VERY καλύτερο τρόπο την τέχνη της επιβίωσης. JOYFUL; IT HAS A SENSE OF COMEDY DEEP Ο Οδυσσέας, έτσι κι αλλιώς, είναι ένα DOWN, A UNIVERSAL TEXT. Η «ΟΔΎΣΣΕΙΑ» πρόσωπο του μύθου και της αλληγορίας, ΕΊΝΑΙ ΈΝΑ ΣΥΓΚΛΟΝΙΣΤΙΚΌ ΈΠΟΣ, ΠΟΛΎ δεν υπήρξε ποτέ, γι’ αυτό υπήρξε. My island is an entire country of its own. It bears something great and grand. It reserves liveliness, a stress-free fast pace with no sign of that slow, relaxed motion of the small aegean islands. Be prepared to eat well everywhere. Even at the most remote little village, you may find a delicious meze and a glass of ouzo. I arrive at the main town. I start strolling around it. On the wharf, at the port, I explore the narrow alleyways all around, the market, and I reach the starting point. The town and the entire island is imbued with the smell of the angels’ local drink. It is called ouzo and goes with everything. Down town and all year long I buy tsoureki at Maskotitsa (+30 22510 47700, maskwtitsa.gr). It smells sweet of mahleb, cardamom and mastic. I like its doughiness and moisture; they’re just the right amount. The grocery store of Skopelitis (+30 22510 26639) at Bas Fanar fills my basket with olives, local legumes, ladotiri cheese from Mytilene and Adalis’ yogurt of Mantamados in the “gragouda” (clay pot). I stop by Ermis’ taverna (+30 22510 26232) for the first ouzo of the day. The environment takes you back to other eras preserving its authenticity as an old coffee shop with its leather sofas and wooden carved mirrors. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Its dried green pea fava soaked in local olive oil and the cured meats simply whet my appetite. For the main meal I choose Refenes in Apano Skala (+30 22510 55701), next to the tarsanas (shipyard) and behind the Castle of Gatelouzi. Right across, there it is, Asia Minor. It was the year 1970 when the grandfather of the family started trading olive oil and in 1981 he bought in Mytilene the first olive oil refinery, transferring his knowledge to the younger members of the family. Today, his grandsons, Babis and Dimitris Papadellis, are producing their own olive oil in their own facilities, while cooperating with over a hundred producers from the island, where olive oil is a savoury treasure, they produce the golden-yellow extra virgin olive oil Sapfo. As a former sailor he have visited many places in the world, but the verdant beauty, the beaches and the paths in Skiathos made it his beloved location in the whole globe. There, in the beneficial microclimate, the reach soil and the sea gives the wine its authentic Skiathian character. IMARET, PYRGOS OF MYTILENE, LORIET, WHITE HOUSE Imaret, Pyrgos of Mytilene, Loriet, White House: buildings with their own history that the recent years are writing their own chapter in Greek hospitality. Imaret in Kavala in its 4,200 sq m encompasses the Ottoman history of the town, as it is a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture. Its founder was Muhammad Ali Pasha -he later became Wali and Khedive of Egypt-, who was born in the town and wanted to leave behind a charitable organization. This complex of public edifices was a charitable institute and its basic pillars were hospitality, charity and education of Muslim boys to its two madrasahs. It operated as an educational institution until July 1902 and offered food until 1923. In 2001 started its renovation, with private initiative, and now it operates as a hotel-monument, with some visitable spaces. A true gem, unique of its kind, Pyrgos of KVA MJT
