TROUPE, ROY VONGTAMA LIMITED ENGAGEMENT THROUGH MAY 19, 2019 AT THE BECKETT THEATRE AT THEATRE ROW (410 WEST 42ND STREET) OPENING NIGHT IS WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 2019 AT 7:00PM New York, NY (April 29, 2019) - Pan Asian Repertory Theatre (Tisa Chang, Founding Artistic Producing Director), with a prestigious grant and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, continues the 2018- 2019 season with the World Premiere of the play The Brothers Paranormal, by Prince Gomolvilas. Directed by Jeff Liu, the six-member cast features Brian D. Coats as Felix, Natsuko Hirano as Noi, Vin Kridakorn as Max, Emily Kuroda as Tasanee, Dawn L. Troupe as Delia, and Roy Vongtama as Visarut. Performances began April 28, 2019 for a limited engagement through May 19, 2019 in The Beckett Theatre at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street). Opening Night is Wednesday evening, May 1, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. A ghost story, The Brothers Paranormal by Prince Gomolvilas, directed by Jeff Liu, follows two Thai brothers who investigate paranormal activities in the Midwest. When the siblings visit the home of an African-American couple, who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina, their notions of reality, and spiritual beliefs are pushed to a breaking point. Pan Asian Rep explores—for the first time—Thai-American and African-American intersection, spiritual displacement, and the taboo subject of mental health. May is recognized as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. 257 West 52nd Street, New York, NY 10019 www.richardhillmanpr.com "The play's intersection of genre and race, as well as the exploration of the spirit realm in a country that’s doing some deep soul-searching, is what drives my passion for this project” state Prince Gomolvilas. “While I interviewed and shadowed actual paranormal investigators, I also spoke to one of the world’s leading experts on dying, death, and grief—all in an effort to explore the play’s disparate themes: the trauma of displacement (from one’s country of origin, from post-Katrina New Orleans, from the corporeal world); the high incidence of mental health issues among Asian immigrants; and the different ways in which people cope with incredible loss." Director Jeff Liu had this to share, “The Brothers Paranormal is a ghost story, and as such, it has many of the elements that people find so entertaining about the genre: a supernatural, possibly deadly force, a mystery as to its nature, the banding together of ordinary humans to face it; moments of terror, of surprise, of humor, of genuine human connection.” He went on to say, “It is also a drama about how we deal with grief, complicated by family legacies of mental illness and depression. It‘s about two unlikely heroes, both members of embattled minorities in this country, who find a way to connect and support each other through the worst that life has to offer. Over the course of the play, our protagonists Max and Delia, a Thai-American man and an African-American woman, respectively, form a connection, and I can’t remember seeing the intersection between these cultures dramatized so gracefully.” He ended by stating, “These connections across differences are exactly what we need more of in these anxious, polarizing times.” The creative team includes Set Design by Sheryl Liu (Daybreak), Costume Design by Hyun Sook Kim (Dream of Red Pavilions), Lights by Victor En Yu Tan (Shogun Macbeth), and Sound Design by Ian Wherle (Sayonara). The Stage Management team is Kristine Schlachter and Sabrina Morabito. His plays have been produced at The Drill Hall (London), East West Players (Los Angeles), Lorraine Hansberry Theatre (San Francisco), and Singapore Repertory Theatre. His work has also been developed at the Alley Theatre, Center Theatre Group, Geva Theatre Center, La Jolla Playhouse, The Lark, Ma-Yi Theater Company, South Coast Repertory, and TheatreWorks Silicon Valley. Tisa Chang (Pan Asian Rep Founding Artistic Producing Director) has led the company since inception, promoting stories seldom told and voices seldom heard. She is a theatre professional with five decades of experience as an actor, dancer, and director. Highlights include: Sayonara; The Joy Luck Club; the epic play-with-music Cambodia Agonistes, which toured nationally and to Cairo and Johannesburg; Kwatz! The Tibetan Project; and Rashomon, which was invited to Havana Theatre Festival in 2003. She innovated premieres, in English and Mandarin Chinese of the Peking opera, Return of the Phoenix, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at La Mama ETC. Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, celebrating its 42nd Milestone Season, is the most veteran Asian American theatre company on the East Coast.     IN BRIEF FOUNDING South Coast Repertory is a professional resident theatre founded in 1964 by David Emmes and Martin Benson. VISION Creating the finest theatre in America. LEADERSHIP SCR is led by Artistic Director David Ivers and Managing Director Paula Tomei. Its 33-member Board of Trustees is made up of community leaders from business, civic and arts backgrounds. In addition, hundreds of volunteers assist the theatre in reaching its goals, and about 2,000 individuals and businesses contribute each year to SCR’s annual and endowment funds. MISSION South Coast Repertory was founded in the belief that theatre is an art form with a unique power to illuminate the human experience. We commit ourselves to exploring urgent human and social issues of our time, and to merging literature, design, and performance in ways that test the bounds of theatre’s artistic possibilities. FACILITY/ The David Emmes/Martin Benson Theatre Center is a three-theatre complex. Prior to the pandemic, there were six SEASON annual productions on the 507-seat Segerstrom Stage, four on the 336-seat Julianne Argyros Stage, with numerous workshops and theatre conservatory performances held in the 94-seat Nicholas Studio. " Tapping my toe, just tapping my toe" she sings, to the tune of "Singin' in the Rain," before a crowd of kindergarteners at a downtown elementary school in Atlanta. "What a glorious feeling, I'm — nodding my head!" The kids gleefully tap their toes and nod themselves silly as they sing along. "Give yourselves a standing O!" Ms. Edson cries, when the song ends. Her charges scramble to their feet and clap their hands, sending their arms arcing overhead in a giant "O." This willowy 37-year-old woman with tousled brown hair and a big grin couldn't seem more different from Dr. Vivian Bearing, the brilliant, emotionally remote English professor who is the heroine of her play WIT — which has won such unanimous critical acclaim in its small Off- Broadway production. Vivian is a 50-year-old scholar who has devoted her life to the study of John Donne's "Holy Sonnets." Ellison, Advisor The purpose of this study was to examine the ways in which a professional theatre can impact its community and to provide useful suggestions for young producers hoping to start their own theatre. By using the West Virginia Public Theatre as a case study and by examining its three-part mission (to entertain, to educate, and to improve the quality of life), this study highlights both effective and ineffectual practices conducted by the theatre, its administration, and its staff to ascertain the efficacy of that mission. Furthermore, the numerous voices stemming from my personal interviews with a cross-section of the community have served as a principal source of data from which to analyze the theatre’s impact on the blue-collar, sports- focused society of North Central West Virginia. West Virginia Public Theatre was established in 1985 and since has grown to be a reputable summer stock company. Modeled on the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, West Virginia Public Theatre has developed from a small, unknown theatre performing in a parking lot tent to a well-respected summer stock theatre with aspirations of further developing into a regional company.

    National Playwright Residency Program PROGRAM PARTICIPANT BIOS PLAYWRIGHTS Murielle Borst-Tarrant Murielle Borst-Tarrant (Kuna/Rappahannock Nations) is an author, playwright, director, producer, cultural artist, educator, and human rights activist. Murielle began working as an artist early in her life with Spiderwoman Theatre. After attending Long Island University, she began combining Native American myth and creation stories to help compose a subgenre of literature referred to as Indigenous Fantasy. She is the author of the book series The Star Medicine and short stories published by Miami University Press. She is the Artist Director of Safe Harbor Indigenous Collective. She has produced, wrote, and directed Don’t Feed the Indians- A Divine Comedy Pageant! which premiered at La MaMa in 2017. She works on the deconstructing the pedagogy of the arts within Native communities in the NYC education system. Nominated for the Rockefeller grant in 2001, she won a Native Heart Award. She served as the Special Assistant to the North American Regional representative to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Global Indigenous Woman’s Caucus Chair (North America) in 2013 to May of 2014. She has spoken at the Indigenous Women’s Symposium at Trent University, at the International Conference at the Muthesius Academy of Art in Kiel Germany, and the Norwegian Theater Academy. J. Nicole Brooks J. Nicole Brooks (she/they) is an actor, author, director, gremlin, educator, and social justice warrior based in Chicago with roots in Los Angeles and Brooklyn. Brooks is an ensemble member at the Tony Award winning Lookingglass Theatre Company and serves as Associate Artistic Director for Collaboration Theatre.
