When school students chant inappropriate and sexist ditties on trams or go marauding through the streets at end of year or even are involved in scuffles after AFL games some ten years after completing school, it is the student’s school that is almost always named (and blamed) for these incidents. Schools are credited with so much of the formation of young people whereas one could argue that so much of a child and their behaviour is determined by their genetic make-up and the family values instilled at home. Looking back I’m not sure how much my school influenced the person I have become but I do clearly recall the influence that a few teachers had on me as a young person. There are certainly many dedicated teachers and staff at Monivae who I know do have a significant positive impact on the lives of the young people in their care. Fortunately at Monivae we had a wonderful group of Year 12s again this year, so ably lead by Louis Beaton and Vania McCaskill, that finished the year with great dignity demonstrating respect and affection for the College. This has indeed been a hallmark throughout my time at Monivae. Sometimes I fear that schools may claim too much credit for their Old Collegians especially the successful ones. One wise Headmaster I once knew suggested that this was OK as long as you also acknowledged those who weren’t so successful and ended up in jail or struggling in other ways. I’d like to think that Monivae acknowledges and welcomes all Old Collegians returning to the school wherever their path post school has taken them. Mr Danny Franc shouldered responsibility for both the Director of Faith and Mission role and Religious Education Faculty Leader again this year. Danny’s dedicated and affable personality ensured that the MSC charism was very much at the fore in all College activities. The senior retreats and the many year level reflection days are opportunities to really focus on the core of what Monivae aspires to be and thanks to Mr Franc’s talents these are regularly memorable and quite powerful experiences for our students. Monivae forged even closer ties with St Mary’s Parish School this year and this resulted in more sharing of liturges, ANZAC and Remembrance Day services, staff social functions, as well as all the other mutual 12 students to focus solely on their studies. The Year 11 Cadet Leaders benefits in the areas of ICT and Compliance that have arisen over time were most impressive in the way they assumed this extra responsibility since the movement of St Mary’s onto the site at Hiller Lane. and the Cadet Parade in less than ideal conditions was a great example of the grit and perseverance that this program hopes to build in We were fortunate to have former Headmaster, Fr John Mulrooney MSC, students. Collegians to draw upon at the dinner was a testament to the affection so many have for this school. Mr Andrew Bird (OC ’79) was a most experienced guest speaker who was able to enlighten students on just a few of the many opportunities that students have and gave some very Mark McGinnity sound advice for our young people on how to go about accessing them. Principal The College Musical, ‘Oliver’, once again showcased the extraordinary talents of our students and it was certainly an enjoyable and professional production. Congratulations to all involved and particularly to the Director, Ms Helen Henry, who has also reinvigorated the drama program at the College. The Monivae Unconventional Theatre Troupe (MUTT) has already had a dramatic impact at various College events. Sport still remains an important aspect of schools in the Western District and particularly at Monivae. Our various athletes and teams performed very well this year with numerous Glenelg District, regional and even state titles to our credit. The girls’ sporting teams continue to shine and it would be fair to say they had greater success overall than the boys’ teams. Ms Sarah Byron, our very dedicated Sports Co-ordinator, along with many generous staff, did a fabulous job looking after the multitude of different teams that had to be selected and transported to play all over the state. Some ten different teams competed through to State final level and all represented the College with great pride and distinction. Unsurprisingly they don’t hold many state finals in Hamilton and the time and effort to travel to perform at this level by these students, the staff and their families is quite considerable and all should be applauded for this. The various sports reports will individually acknowledge these students. There were substantial improvements made to the main oval with the completion of the irrigation system which is fed by the new dam at the back of the College, the seeding of couch grass in the outfield, and the widening of the main wicket square to accommodate five pitches. 6

Parents & Friends

This year has been a busy year for the Monivae College Parents & Friends Association. The P & F co-ordinates several events throughout the year. The annual Monivae College Presentation Ball was a resounding success, as the families of the Year 11 students and members of the wider community, celebrated with the students. All students excelled in their presentation, demeanour and dancing. It was a wonderful evening and a great start to their senior years at the college. At the school swimming sports, the P & F supplied drinks and lolly bags in a new initiative. It not only raised some money for the College but provided much needed sustenance for the athletes on the day. Recently the Monivae Cadets showcased their work throughout the year in the Cadet Parade. The P & F supplied the morning tea and drinks after the Mass. This was great success with families and students enjoying the food which sold out. In another new initiative, the P & F has produced a wall calendar for 2020 which showcases the College. With another very successful year behind them, the P & F has raised in the vicinity of $10,000, which is returned to the school for the benefit of the students. The P & F is currently campaigning for new members. The P & F is a great way to support the students and make a contribution to Monivae. Pauline Perkins Monivae P&F 9 School Captains

Louis shows genuine care and something that I think Monivae is all about. Last year, during the time of leadership applications, I was asked the question: To Mr McGinnity, this year, in particular, we have grown to admire you What does Monivae mean to me? I will try and answer this for readers. professionally as well as personally. You work hard to run this school For years, I had looked towards the end of my time at Monivae with and we know that a school doesn’t function without a strong principal. distant anticipation. “Following the example of Jesus let us draw near to the unfortunate, wounded people and do everything in our power to comfort them” – Father Jules Chevalier. At Monivae we continually strive to act in this way – we provide opportunities for our staff and students to do everything in our power to comfort the less fortunate. 2019 was no different, and I hope that all involved in Faith and Mission at Monivae fully understand the importance of their work. Throughout this year, we have undertaken the following activities: Retreats And Reflection Days For every student at Monivae College, the Retreats at Year 11 and 12, and the Reflection Days at Years 7-10 give them an opportunity to experience a calming time that gently re-introduces them to the Jesus story. We welcomed Fr Tan Nguyen MSC to the fold this year in time for the Year 11 retreat where the added comfort of having an MSC present was welcomed. It must be noted, however, that the importance our staff have in running these days and keeping the MSC spirit alive must not be undervalued. The Year 12 Retreat was held in Halls Gap during the first week of school in January. We welcomed a new student to the school and began the school year with a great MSC spirit. It was pleasing to get positive feedback from the students at the end of a great three days. The Year 11 Retreat was also in Halls Gap, the Year 10 Reflection Day and 9 Reflection Day were held at the Dunkeld Community centre, whilst the Year 8 Reflection Day and 7 Reflection Day were held in Hamilton. As the programs grow from an introductory day up to multiple nights away, the moving further and further away from Hamilton represent the spiritual growth of these days. The Reflection Days are so important to our students, even if in Years 7 and 8 the feedback is often about playing more games. These days are not camps or sporting events but are important times in allowing time to reflect on one’s spirituality is important. It is imperative that these continue to be supported as they are. St Vincent De Paul Throughout the year, Monivae students raise funds and provide goods to our local St Vincent de Paul Society to help those in need. This support is shown in a number of ways. Annual Winter Appeal: This year we held a Pyjama Casual Day, and then donate this money raised, as well as some blankets provided by students to the local St Vincent de Paul Society. The T.I.N.N.Y.S (Those in need, need your support) for St Vinnies is when our homerooms provide trailer loads of canned food for the local community. Well done to all families who provided many tins this year. Christmas Tree: At the end of each year our students and staff and families put a gift under the tree in the front office. This gift is donated to St Vinnie's to ensure that local families have something to smile about at Christmas. Sacred Heart Mission – Soup Kitchen Once a term this year our staff, led by Mrs Sophie Claffey and students mainly from Year 11 stayed overnight in Melbourne on a Friday night and spent Saturday (9 am to 2 pm) assisting in the kitchen at the Sacred Heart Mission. The students and staff prepare, serve and clean up, often asking if there is anything else they can do. This is a great service that our students provide. Thank you to Mrs Sophie Claffey who has been the liaison for Monivae College this year. Uniting Church Lunches – Hamilton On multiple occasions throughout the year, two staff and two students from Monivae joined in cooking and serving lunch at the local Uniting Church for those in our local community that needed a hot lunch. The staff and students gave up their own to provide this valuable service. 11 World Day Of Prayer All Saints / All Souls Liturgy: Held at Monivae at the end of October, Our Year 12 Leaders joined students from the other Hamilton secondary we celebrated the Holy day, as well as recognised those loved ones schools in a World Day of Prayer celebration at Good Shepherd College. that had passed away. Kiribati survivor – A life of subsistence, song, dance, poetry & love We began our time on the outer island of Abemama with Mr McCarthy’s in-law family near the main causeway. They were extremely generous and welcoming to our Monivae group. Our time was spent learning various different cultural skills such as coconut husking, shrimping, local mat weaving as well as play games with the children. It was a unique time together of living in the local family environment as the I-Kiribati people do and sharing laughs and stories with them. For the first three mornings, we had a chance to go out into the lagoon at low tide with Mr McCarthy and some of the I-Kiribati locals in order to master the art of shrimping. These are the infamous giant praying mantis shrimp – a large nocturnal fearless predator living individually in holes in the lagoon sand. We were set the challenge of catching one completely by ourselves by the end of the third morning. We were trying to catch a species which were quite intimidating, having large jet-propelled sharp forelimbs, so we knew attempting to catch one with our bare hands would not be an easy task. Nevertheless, we were up for the challenge. By the end of the three days, those who came along had all managed to pull up a shrimp with the help of either Mr McCarthy or his in-laws. However, it was Sam MacDonald and Hannah Burridge who were skilled enough to catch one completely unassisted, which is a massive credit to them and I’m sure it will be a memory that they’ll never forget. Once our time living with the family was up, we then spent nine days at Chevalier College which was an eye-opening and life-changing experience. From the first night where we were the stars in many hours of dancing to contemporary music, to the hours in class with Chevalier students, to the traditional dances on the last night. All of it was unforgettable. From the first day of being introduced into their classroom, we noticed that the I-Kiribati students were reserved and shy, but by the end of the first day, we had quickly formed bonds with the students. The classrooms were open to the weather and the resources were minimal. The students share a communal cup when they want water and the teachers sometimes just don’t turn up. Very different to Monivae College and life in Australia. The group was also lucky enough to be at Chevalier for a Health Day, which turned into a sports day. The students are so carefree and put us into all their relay teams no matter our ability. The relays included running backwards or dizzy races. None of the students care who wins and everyone was in it for a laugh. By the end of just over a week, we’d made new friends with all of the students were brave enough to speak English and received numerous goodbye gifts and love letters. While it might have only been a week, it was enough time to make lifelong friends and enough to make anyone consider going back to visit some of the most welcoming people on the planet. We want to thank the two accompanying staff who gave up their time, their holidays and assisted in all facets of the program: Miss Miranda Reaburn and Miss Ashley Quinsey. We’d also like to thank Mr Damian McCarthy who has been returning annually to Kiribati since the year 2005 while at Monivae College, and who really relishes in sharing his local knowledge and skills with the group in-country. We are also very appreciative of the whole community at Chevalier College on Abemama for their resilience and strength in renovating our accommodation after some months of consistent wet weather and wind, and in making us a part of their community. Such is the spirit of the I-Kiribati people, with their national moto of - Peace, Goodwill and Prosperity to all (Te Mauri, Te Raoi, ao Te Tabomoa). Cooper Seitz and Angus Harms Year 11

The Mission Experience to Tapini saw Year 11 students Bella Povey, Olivia Hendrick, Madeline Casey, Claire Logan, Chelsea Storer, Lara Herrmann, Mitchell Grant, Liam Walsh, Aiden Rogers and myself venture into the word of the Papua New Guinea highlands. Also on this trip were group leaders Helen Henry, Merrin Shannon and Tynan Shannon. When we arrived in Port Moresby, we were welcomed kindly by Father Brian Cahill who then took us on the back of the truck through the streets. During our time in Port Moresby, we explored the city and also had dinner with other MSCs. To get to Tapini, we caught a 16-seater plane, during our flight we got to see the incredible mountainous terrain we were surrounded by. Upon landing, we were welcomed with amazing traditional dancing and a welcoming speech at the Sacred Heart Secondary College. During the trip, we participated in walks to distant villages, where we stayed overnight and played with and taught the students and cooled off in the river. We spent the majority of our time in Tapini participating in activities such as swimming or playing sports such as volleyball or soccer as well as the kids teaching us about their country and us teaching them about ours. We also participated in the Sacred Heart Feast Day at the secondary school where we shared food and songs with the students. In conclusion, each student came home with amazing memories of the friendly people and the beautiful place we were lucky enough to experience and we certainly had a greater perspective of the world and how lucky we are. What a year it has been. So much learning, fun and challenges has this very special group experienced throughout 2019. The pressures of submitting School Assessed Coursework, sitting exams, contemplating options after school all the while trying to enjoy and take in the ride that is Year 12. When you consider all the opportunities that come in year 12 and what is squeezed into about 32 and a half weeks it really is a flat out experience for the students. Some of these opportunities have included the annual Year 12 Retreat to kick off the year, their last chance to participate in the production, swimming and athletic carnivals and represent the school in chess competitions and other interschool sporting activities. Mission Fair Day and Sacred Heart Day are always highlights in the school calendar and the year 12 cohort take a lead role in running these events. Their enthusiasm to become the “Master Chef” class of 2019 made for an intense battle. Plenty of hard work has gone into 2019 from this cohort and they should be proud of their achievements. They have contributed positively to the culture of the school and set a quality example for the rest of the school to follow. A special mention must go out to the homeroom teachers Miss Jacinta Ryan, Mrs Sofia Vearing and Mr Michael Harms who have been a wonderful support to the students throughout the year. The enthusiasm amongst this group of students is something that is very evident and has made for an enjoyable 2019. As a group, they are always happy to assist in school programs and get involved in extra- curricular events. Outside of their normal routine in the classroom these students have had a range of extra-curricula experiences which has included visiting local primary schools to assist with their learning, heading to Melbourne to run the soup van, intense soccer competitions, lectures on how to maximise study time and of course the annual Presentation Ball. On every occasion the group has risen to the occasion to make these experiences something to remember. Whilst on retreat the openness and honesty of the students have allowed for all the staff and students to better get to know each other and this will assist in preparing for their final year of schooling. I am really looking forward to what this group can do in 2020 as I feel that not only will the newly indicted school leaders rise to the occasion but the entire cohort will set a fine example for the rest of the students. On behalf of the Year 11 students taking part in the Presentation Ball this evening we would like to thank and acknowledge the Official party, Mr and Mrs Laurie Cogger and Mr and Mrs McGinnity, special guests and our MC Mr Benjamin White. We’d also like to thank everyone’s family and friends for attending this extraordinary night. It’s such a pleasure to see everyone in our year level looking so beautifully presentable. I know that everyone has put a lot of time into their dresses, suits, hair and makeup, and wow you all look wonderful. We cannot forget to mention the amazing 2019 Presentation Ball Committee. The amount of work and effort these ladies and gentlemen have contributed is remarkable and we promise that your outstanding work has not gone unnoticed. Another huge thank you must go to all parents who have been a vital part of not only this evening, but to all the events leading up to it. All of your patience with talks of presentation ball dresses and makeup trials and hair appointments and suit fittings, as well as taking us to all of the practices that we have had has truly been incredible. Without your support and help (and your money) towards tonight, none of this would have been possible. Lastly, none of the dancing that you have witnessed tonight would have been possible without the help of our wonderful instructors, Mark and Helen Baker. You took on the challenge of teaching 76 uncoordinated, very restless year 11’s how to dance. We are still unsure how, yet you took this on and now we can confidently say we are professionals. Thank you so much for your time, your patience over the past 8 weeks and your overuse of the word WAIT. Alyssa Neeson Year 11 student

This year the Year 10 program built on the success of the previous year with our second careers camp in Melbourne, the RRRR program and students completing the Teen Mental Health First Aid course. Over 40 Year 10s took the opportunity to enrol in courses at HDSC such as automotive, engineering, hospitality, building, screen and media while others were involved in RIST. Many Year 10s continued with the Cadet program moving into leadership roles. There was certainly plenty on offer! MSC in Action sessions revolved around the development of the mind, body and soul through fitness and meditation sessions, minute-to-win- it games and board games, a trivia competition, a year level Liturgy, shared afternoon teas and some thought-provoking sessions around current issues. The Careers camp during May in Melbourne offered students a great opportunity to get a snapshot of various career pathways and life after secondary school. Students had up to twelve different experiences to choose from ranging from careers in technology, nursing, photography, hospitality, trades, the zoo, gaming and sports management to name a few. They also met with Monivae old collegians for dinner on the first night to hear their career pathway stories since leaving Monivae. This camp also gave the Year 10s an opportunity to develop their navigation and public transport skills around Melbourne as they moved to their daily sessions, dinners and night activities such as indoor rock climbing, ten-pin bowling and the Hoyts cinema in Melbourne Central. The camp wrapped up with the VCE and Careers Expo at the Caulfield Racecourse. This was a wonderful experience for our students and many thanks must go to Mr Michael Harms who was such a significant driving force in organising and running the camp. Another careers opportunity at the Warrnambool campus of Deakin University presented itself and gave the students another look at university life. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 10 homeroom teachers of Mr Tim Kermeen, Mr Damian McCarthy, Mr Dale Minney and Ms Miranda Reaburn for their support throughout the year in delivering the Year 10 program including the camp, wellbeing and MSC in Action sessions. For both staff and students, Year 10 is a challenging but rewarding year. The growth of these fine young men and women was very noticeable, particularly towards the end of the year. They mature and become more respectful and responsible for themselves and others as they take on a more purposeful direction in life. I hope that the experiences they have had in 2019 have been enjoyable and I wish them the best for their final years at Monivae. Scott Kruger Year 10 Co-ordinator

Year 9

Year 9 is a challenging time for both students and teachers. The of our cohort have taken this opportunity with enthusiasm. Cadets students are in the transition stage from children to adults and because also provide the opportunity for our students to develop resilience, they all develop at different speeds mentally, physically, spiritually comradery and new skills and some use it as a pathway to further and emotionally, a class of twenty five students can be a real melting study/employment in the armed forces. I then asked him what In an attempt to aid our Year 9 cohort smoothly through this difficult he thought was the best thing about Monivae, and he replied, “The time, we as a College offer several specialised programs to our kids”. Beginning year 8 with confidence and lots of bravado, 97 students met the challenges of the new year with mixed up homeroom classes, new teachers and different expectations, with enthusiasm and some trepidation. We have had a successful year with a wide variety of opportunities to take advantage of. These students were the first year 8’s to spend a full year as Cadets and attended both Bivouac and May Camp with many stressful, enlightening and humorous moments shared with each other, helping to build resilience and relationships to support our cohort. Coming home in the rain on the Thursday night after watching our trenches and fire pits fill up with water made the adventure something that no-one will forget in a hurry. It was with great sadness that we farewelled one of our own at the beginning of Term 2. The support and consideration for friends and classmates was clearly evident and in true Monivae spirit, we helped each other through a very tough time. Nat, you are sorely missed to this day. We have participated in House sports, answered Quiz Kahoots, sung our hearts out for House Singing (well some of us did!) and made the most of representing the school at various regional and state levels. Many students stood up at Assembly or were acknowledged on the big screen as having shown great skill and sportsmanship in representing themselves and the college. This year, our student’s well being has been overseen by the hard- working homeroom teachers Mr Peter Fotheringham – 8.1, Mrs Khaleda Barr - 8.2, Mrs Claire Toffolon – 8.3 and Mrs Rosalie Fotheringham – 8.4. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their tireless efforts in assisting all of the year 8s throughout 2019. Freddo Friday proved popular once again this year with many students being nominated by staff for having shown thoughtfulness, kindness, academic skill, resilience, determination, MSC spirit and a myriad of other attributes. Our weekly assemblies have allowed us to celebrate success and look for ways to improve. The 2019 year 8’s have matured and shown great courage and consideration throughout the year and after speaking to their teachers about their efforts and endeavours, it is obvious that they demonstrate great potential for their future success at Monivae. Well done everyone. Katee Mitchell Year 8 Co-ordinator 30 Year 7

The start of this year saw 93 excited Year 7 students ready to start their secondary education journey at Monivae College. After getting the students settled into our Excel wing on their first day, there was a buzz in the air as students eagerly awaited Port Fairy camp the following week. This camp provides the students an opportunity to meet new friends and get to know the teachers. It was great to see at the end of camp the friendships that formed and watch this grow throughout the year. As the terms passed the students settled in well. They got their first taste of the Monivae swimming and athletics carnivals as well as their first taste of exams. This can be an anxious time for our students but it is a great learning experience that helps to set them up for their senior years at Monivae. I was also lucky enough this year to watch the year 7 talent at the performance night as well as the year 7’s that were a part of the Oliver cast, some of which even had speaking and singing roles, which is great to see in their first year at Monivae. I think one of the biggest things to come out of this wonderful Year 7 group is their friendly competitive nature. Many challenges were set during our MSC in Action time, where homerooms went against one another in mind and sporting challenges. The groups came together and worked as teams ensuring that all homerooms had their turn at winning points towards the Excel Cup. Congratulations to all of the students who took the time to participate in all of the extra-curricular activities offered at Monivae. It is great to see the students making the most of what Monivae has to offer and their first year at the college. I wish them all the best of luck in 2020. A big thank you to the Year 7 homeroom teachers: Tyler Fehsler, 7.1; Nima Carswell, 7.2; Phil Wheaton, 7.3, and Ben White, 7.4 for all of their effort this year in guiding and supporting our students during their first year at high school. In 2019, Ffrench House was coordinated by Nima Carswell and led by the hard work and dedication of Sophie Page and Sam Boreham. Although ending the year at the bottom of the leaderboard, we have shown our school community that while we are small in number, we are big in spirit. Ffrench began the year on a high with being awarded the Best Cheer Squad and Behaviour at the House Swimming Carnival. A day full of laughter and sore throats ended in the Year 12 Ffrench girls jumping into the pool adorned in a sea of red, foreshadowing the fierce spirit that the House maintained throughout 2019. Sam and Sophie organised a creative and successful M&M Pong competition – a school appropriate version of the party game seen frequently in American teen films. Ffrench also supported Lonsdale’s basketball competition by selling spiders, raising over $300 to support the Red Nose: Grief and Loss organisation. We are proud to revel in our shooting stars who won us the Clay Target Shooting competition and our Chess players who also came out on top. We look forward to hopefully climbing the leaderboard in 2020 – Go Ffrench! Mrs Nima Carswell Ffrench House Co-ordinator

What a year from Glenelg House! We came so close to taking out the trophy but ultimately fell short to Lonsdale. We started out the year with the Swimming Carnival where we had fantastic levels of participation across all years. As the day began, we started off very well, with the fresh crop of Year 7s tearing up the pool in a variety of different events. Huge congratulations to our age group champions. The Athletics Carnival fast approached and after coming so close in the swimming we wanted to take this one home. Again, we had very strong participation across all year levels and we had a hunger for a victory which was excellent to see! This hunger was led by our fantastic house captains Ben Cullinane, and Jerrika Pevitt. These two leaders were inspirational in every aspect, but they particularly impressed us in their leadership at the sporting carnivals. Congratulations to our age champions. The House Cross Country, which was a favourite of ours, was set on a beautiful winters day. We headed down to Lake Hamilton with high hopes and even higher expectations after our results from the swimming and athletics. The day was highlighted by our age champs. Our house fundraiser event for the year was a good old-fashioned pie and Coke day, with the combination of a pie and Coke costing only $5. This event was held on a Tuesday, following a long weekend, which resulted in quite a few keen students, unfortunately, forgetting and not having any money to purchase the combo deal. Although this was the case, we still managed to attract quite a few students and sold the amount that we had planned to. Most importantly, we raised vital funds on the day which is what it’s all about. House Singing was an event that was associated with a lot of excitement, as well as plenty of nerves. This year’s theme was “Best Selling Singles of All Time”, where Glenelg chose to perform the catchy “I’m a Believer” by The Monkees. Throughout the practice runs leading up to the day, things slowly but surely started to come together, and we were all well prepared to perform on the day. We managed to pull off our best performance of all when it mattered most on the day. With both our band and singers coming together nicely to produce what we felt was a wonderful performance that entertained the crowd. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough for us to win, coming in at 3rd place behind Mitchell and Lonsdale who both performed extremely well on the day. Ben and Jerri, along with all the year 12s we want to thank you for the role you have played in making Glenelg a very enjoyable and competitive house all year. We wish to extend our congratulations to Glenelg’s own Vincent Huf who managed to crack into the Under 15 Australian XI squad. A huge congratulations to Vincent. Looking forward into 2020 we are excited to be welcoming Noah O’Brien and Maddie Casey as the captains for the year. Congratulations to Noah and Maddie, and we trust that you will be great role models for the Glenelg House. We look forward to working with you next year, and ensuring Glenelg is the house to beat in 2020. - GO GLENELG! Mr Fehsler & Mr Johnson Glenelg House co-ordinators 34 Lonsdale House

What a great year it has been for Lonsdale House. Winning the House This year a lot rode on our House Singing results. We knew if we got Aggregate two years in a row is an amazing achievement. Our aim was a great result it would nearly cement our leaders position in the House to achieve high levels of participation in all age groups for each major aggregate. We worked hard to choose a song that would suit our house event, in the hope to get a few more wins on the board. To the credit of and would help to motivate students to participate with eagerness and the Lonsdale house, they all rose to the challenge, trying very hard in all enthusiasm. Our efforts weren’t rewarded as we only finished second. events. It was great to see the newest Lonsdale members in year 7 eagerly participating in all events. The poolside was a sea of blue House, with the houses combining to play in the Teachers vs Students with plenty of great costumes ranging from Noahs blue dress to Toms match. Despite some ‘Steph Curry’ like shooting from Ethan and skintight morphsuit. A big thank you for the effort of our age group Charlie, the teachers somehow managed to win (cheated). champions. Already, of luck for 2020! we were so proud of everyone’s efforts, participation and display of positive spirit. Siobhan Wheaton and Charlie Lang. 35 Mitchell House

Yellow Everyone! After a slow start to the year, Mitchell came home strongly with impressive results in the House Quiz and we woke up “from ash and dust” to regain our title in House Singing by ½ point. House activities are all about participation and we would like to thank everyone for having a go this year, putting themselves out of their comfort zone and surprisingly at times, having fun. From Ruby in Yr 7 competing in the Open IM at the swimming carnival, to Josh swimming in every event, people went above and beyond to help out. Athletics and Cross Country saw some great individual performances contribute to our points tally. Our House Activity tug of war saw a large group cheering in the basement, and our fund raiser for Brain Cancer had an even larger group lined up for Brownies and Milkshakes. Huge thanks must go to our Yr 12 cohort for all of their help and support throughout the year, from the smiles to the baking, the football and netball stars, the lastminute help and general encouragement - we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you to you Mrs Mitchell for helping us throughout the year – your advice and chocolate were much appreciated. Congratulations to Sam and Grace, our incoming Mitchell House leaders in 2020, we wish them all the best for next year. Make the most of all of your opportunities and lead by example with enthusiasm and pride. Angus Campbell and Rachael Millard.

Director of Studies

In 2019 we continued to diversify our scope of studies and curriculum, with teachers working across the Victorian Curriculum, VCE, and VCAL to provide excellent opportunities for all of our students. Students engaged in a rich curriculum which included various advanced streams, such as History, Geography, Mathematics and English, as well as opportunities for vocational pathways including Agricultural Science and VET courses. As well as the mainstream curriculum, students have been able to participate in a number of extra-curricula opportunities. Debating, language and humanities competitions, and state and national contests in Mathematics and Science have provided many opportunities for students to go beyond the normal classroom expectations. We have also seen a number of our senior students excel in the Arts and various sporting events. As always, the majority of our senior students in 2019 are working towards the completion of a VCE. This year also sees the first full cohort of Year 11 students completing a Unit 3 and 4 sequence in Religion and Society, with their first formal VCE examination in November. As Director of Studies for 2019, I would like to thank all of the faculty leaders, year level coordinators, and administrative staff who have supported the students and teachers throughout the year. English

2019 was another momentous year for the English Faculty. On top of welcoming several new teaching staff, we also saw our Year 12s complete their studies admirably and with determination. Our Junior and Senior debating teams competed in Hamilton, Warrnambool, and Mount Gambier and were victorious in several competitions. There was an increase in students borrowing from the Library. Lastly, author Scot Gardner returned in Term 4 to conduct workshops with our Year 9s. Monivae’s English classes are microcosms of creative and critical thinking. I have seen all students, across all year levels, engage with the subject with enthusiasm and persistence. It is a rewarding experience. All of this would not be possible without the ongoing dedication of the English teaching staff, who deliver the curriculum with passion and fervour. To that end, I thank: Mr Leon Furze; Mr Michael Harms; Mrs Nima Carswell; Mrs Jane Nankivell; Mrs Nicola Riddle; Mrs Helen Henry; Mr Tyler Fehsler; Mr Mitchell Johnson; Mrs Sarah Stevenson; Mr Andrew Conquest, and Mrs Suzanne Herbert. In 2019 the Humanities Faculty was extremely busy once again across all year levels building an increased sense of enthusiasm for this subject area. Students at all year levels were out on regular excursions to interact with landscapes, historical sites, community events such as Sheepvention and Australia’s legal system via court and magistrates’ visits. These experiences show our students the practical value of the Humanities and allow them to make connections between past, present and future. The addition of Business Management and Geography to our curriculum offering proved successful in 2019, and we look forward to seeing good educational outcomes for students in these VCE classes for years to come. Student engagement can be measured in many ways, but we like to think that the noise coming from Humanities classrooms is around critical thinking, evaluating, wondering and debating about the possibilities for the future, the mistakes of the past and the ways in which young people in 2019 can start to make a difference in their world. Once again, I thank the Humanities staff for their devotion to their students and to this wonderful learning area. Without these people bringing a positive outlook to the humanities classroom the future could look quite overwhelming for young people. This is a responsibility that we, as humanities teachers are acutely aware of in a time of global economic, social and political challenges. Only by understanding, can our students engage proactively in the future. Mrs Sofia Vearing Humanities Faculty Leader

Within the Health and Physical Education domain we continued to make connections with the community in developing understanding of the importance in establishing and maintaining healthy lifestyles. This included Year 10 students experiencing differing sessions across several gyms in Hamilton and also participating in recreational activities with the Hamilton bowling club and the golf course Year 8 HPE students got to be a part of the launch of a new drug education program - D-Force, that was created in the region by a committee of teachers, police officers, educational psychologists, a professional game designer and students. A boardgame version of the video game was utilised this year, and we look forward to incorporating the use of this gaming technology to further connect with our students in combating the use of illicit drugs. Year 9 HPE students got to experience the Melbourne Museum ‘Road to Zero’ program. This incursion engaged students through immersive digital technology to learn about road safety issues and consider how they can contribute to achieving the vision of zero lives lost on our roads. Year 12 Physical Education students and PE staff had the opportunity to engage in two METS interactive lectures with students involved in VO2 max/LIP demonstrations and practical application of biomechanical principles. By allowing staff to experience the latest testing procedures and ways of incorporating practical application to theoretical components, students throughout the middle school will have better grounding of these principles should they choose a VCE physical education pathway. As the front oval redevelopment nears completion, we look forward to new state of the art facilities that will also play a role in better supporting the engagement of our students in the years to come. We welcomed two new staff members to the Health and Physical Education faculty this year – Tyler Fehsler and Mitchell Johnson. Both graduates of Federation University, they have brought with them vibrancy and fresh ideas that have further strengthened a wealth of experience that already existed. Simon Hatherell headed to the annual ACHPER conference in Melbourne providing further opportunity to learn the latest teaching methods and innovative practices. Staff also participated in a lifeguard update, refreshing their knowledge and practice around water safety, enabling the best practices and use of the outstanding pool facility we have. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the work of all teachers of Health & Physical Education, who have worked tirelessly and collaboratively to create the best learning opportunities for all students throughout the year: Simon Hatherell, Tim Kermeen, Terry Molan, Darren Beks, Scott Kruger, Tyler Fehsler, and Mitchell Johnson.

It has been a wonderful year of Performing Arts at Monivae College. The Year 7 and 8 students saw them learn communication skills; mime, vocal dynamics, storytelling, melodrama, mask, ritual theatre and script interpretation. Year 9 drama used Theatre of the Absurd and Stanislavsky to interpret the text Wolf Lullaby into a creepy and chilling performance. They then moved onto mini-ensemble work and created a performance that was shown alongside the VCE drama students. The VCE students travelled to Melbourne to see the Gothic Theatre Production,‘The Yellow Wallpaper’, and later on in the year, were lucky to see the brilliant ‘Robot Song’ at the Hamilton PAC. Both productions were on the VCE text list but also, gave the students an insight into two very different styles of eclectic theatre that went beyond a representation of the reality of life as it is lived. Students developed, rehearsed and refined two ensembles that were over half an hour in length that were brilliant. The first called, ‘Is that a spanner in your apron’ explored the role of women in the workforce after the second world war, the second ‘The fad diet that went horribly wrong’ evolved to be a tale about a fateful encounter with cannibal cult. The highlight being Paris Moritz being dragged through twenty cut up lettuces on stage. The students also developed a solo performance each that was performed in exam conditions. This year, we started M.U.T.T (the Monivae Unconventional Theatre Troupe) that aims to provide a creative outlet for students interested in performing arts. The group’s first official performance was the Art Exhibition and rehearsals are now underway for a mini-production of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ in Term 1 2020. Finally, this year’s musical production of Oliver! was not only highly successful but saw the exceptional commitment from staff and student come to fruition in what was described by the majority of audience members as professional, tight and thoroughly entertaining. Over fifty students were involved and rehearsals were often in the depths of winter however, we pushed through to create a dedicated team where friendships were formed and many laughs shared. Who can forget the many ‘Do it like Deisel’ group photos, games of ‘Bang’, tubs of snake lollies and the pre-show renditions of the school song? There were many standout moments in the show however Bella Cutchie singing while the coat rack fell on her was a highlight. Then there was Emma Gunnings’s flapping hand movements, Jerri Pevitt's near modesty accident with her nightdress, Sam Boreham’s harassing of the audience about mobile phones, Sam Darge’s stage presence being so scary that the audience called out his name when he asked, Edward de Sallis’s snort, Kelly Mitchell’s laugh, the belly dancers, Eliza’s kissing sounds, Jane Nankivell’s fear of heights, the amazing set, the cool costumes, the backstage banter, everyone waiting for the gunshot and so much more… what a fabulous and unforgettable show.

Our year began with our annual joint Music Department and Cadet Band camp to Melbourne to rehearse and take part in the Anzac Day Parade. The preparation for the trip begins many weeks before Anzac Day and requires many lunchtime rehearsals as students learn drum patterns and instrumental parts, all whilst learning to march with precision. The camp provides a valuable opportunity to perfect ensemble skills and the concentrated practise allows them to build stamina for the very long Anzac Day march. Those who were there and those who saw the television coverage would agree that the students looked and sounded amazing. We were privileged in June to have a visit from Caulfield Grammar School who were travelling to the “Generations in Jazz” Festival in Mt Gambier. Their visit gave our Year 7 students the opportunity to see their amazing bands and choirs and participate in a vocal workshop. Around 30 of our year sevens joined in an exciting afternoon, learning how to improvise and extend their vocal skills. The concert inspired many of our students to join our College choir and as a result we have had an increase in student numbers in our choir this year. The students in the year 7-10 classroom music program have participated in the Performance Evening in Semester One to showcase their talents on their instruments as soloists and as a part of the Year 7 band. The Year 10 music class performed in our annual Arts Exhibition, providing ambient music whilst guests viewed the student artwork. Our VCE Music Performance Students, Sam Boreham, Kimberly Gill and Paris Moritz completed their performance exams in October. This exam required students to perform 25 minutes of music from a set list provided by VCAA. The students worked hard all year on these performances and should also be congratulated for their work in Productions, Choir and school ensembles throughout their schooling.

Students this year have continued the rhythm of discovering possible pathways and choices once their schooling has come to an end. As I write this, our Year 12’s are not only preparing for exams or finishing off their VCAL course, but also completing university applications, attending seminars from our local tafe and job agencies and generally preparing for a life after school. What an exciting time! This kind of focus really sharpens in Year 10, where our students this year completed work experience, attended a Careers camp and chose their VCE or VCAL pathway and subjects for their final years of schooling. Supporting them in this process was their Morrisby Report in which the students completed nearly two hours of testing to then receive a report suggesting character strengths, possible subject options, and finally, career suggestions. Other career opportunities this year for our students included come and try days in agriculture, health and at Deakin University. Thank you to the Careers teachers for a wonderful job helping students with subject selection and work experience this year. To students who have come to the end of their secondary, I wish you all the best as you begin the next important chapter in your life. To finish, I would like to reiterate my exact words from last year’s report as they are written exactly as I feel today. To the students who are completing: I hope that some of the options and ways of being informed about career possibilities have come from your time at Monivae and that whatever you pursue, you do so with a great sense of service to others. 56

VET

A wide range of VET courses enables students in Years 10 to 12 to develop vocational skills that enhance their studies and receive nationally recognised certificates. These studies are part of either VCE or VCAL and for two of last year’s students it led to acknowledgement at The High Achievers’ Assembly for scores over 40 in VET Engineering & VET Hospitality. In Sport & Rec, a VET subject delivered at Monivae, scored assessments were also pleasing with most students in the high 30s. At the RIST Graduation ceremony earlier in the year many students attained Certificate II in Agriculture. VET Taster for Year 9 students enables students to experience a hands- on session to get an understanding of the course and where it might lead. From this informed position many students elect a VET course as part of their Year 10, VCE or VCAL. Similarly, the Wool Overview Program provides some insight into the agriculture sector and the wool industry igniting an interest and desire to start a SBAs in Agriculture as part of their senior school studies. The VET department keeps well informed of all the developments occurring in this vibrant sector of the curriculum, attending many conferences over the course of the year and keeping abreast of vast amounts of information. VCAL

Monivae continues to deliver a highly innovative VCAL program and is seen as a leader in this field, having given a number of presentations to VCAL practitioners from schools throughout the region. These sessions have illustrated the interesting engaging projects partaken by students. These are being used as exemplars and as a means of assisting the development of programs for schools. Monivae projects are well designed and integrate learning outcomes from the various strands whilst meeting many required learning outcomes. The value of these studies was again clearly evident in the successful transition of all of last year’s students into apprenticeships, employment and/or further study. VCAL is also assisting the development of leadership skills as each year VCAL students are being elected to school leadership positions largely as a result of the community participation and the leadership entailed in VCAL. Some of the projects done have been the Ride, Walk, Scoot or Skate to School Day to encourage a healthy active lifestyle. This attracted excellent participation from St Mary’s and Monivae students. The Pampered Pups project involved making sustainable, environmentally friendly dog beds to sell to raise funds for the RSPCA. Many business skills were utilised in sourcing building supplies and reclaimed and repurposed items, thus enhancing the theory being learnt in Certificate II Business Studies. Another worthwhile, healthy program involved working in the agriculture patch tending vegetable gardens to provide ingredients for hampers and cooked meals. Students also entered the Wannon Water competition involving the creation of a dish using vegetables grown at school. Vivacious, Vibrant Vital Vegetable VCAL Stir Fry was the product created. As VCAL learning is hands-on practical assessment, exam week allows students more work placement and skill development in an area of their choice. 2019 has been a particularly challenging and very memorable year for cadets. The transition from compulsory Year 9 and 10 participation to Year 8 and 9 ultimately has been successful and all Year 11 leaders did an outstanding job in their roles. Throughout the year the cadet staff and leaders worked hard to plan, provide resources and activities for the cadets. The moto of “teamwork, courage, initiative and respect” has been used and present all year in both the leaders, staff and cadets of the unit. The four major events of the cadet year are the Year 8 Bivouac, the annual May Camp, ANZAC Day and the end of year Ceremonial Parade. Congratulations on everyone’s hard work, commitment, persistence and participation in all of these cadet occasions. The Year 8’s Bivouac brought the cadet year into full swing, as the cadets learnt the basics of fieldwork and camping in the bush. For many of the cadets, this was their first experience camping and completing activities such as navigation, camouflage and concealment, first aid and basic survival. Luckily the weather and conditions on Bivouac were ideal, unlike May Camp… May Camp posed challenges the unit hadn’t faced for many years. The camp was thoroughly organised and planned well in advance. All the Year 8 and 9 cadets experienced their first annual camp at Victoria Point during the first week of May. During the week the cadets took part in many exercises and activities during the day, from early morning reveille to the Last Post at night. On the 4th day of the camp, the weather took a turn for the worse after raining all night and many hours of the day, this led to the halt of all activities. The decision was made to ‘abandon camp’ so the entire unit grabbed what they could carry, marched to the front gate, and left Victoria Point. I praise the endurance, patience and teamwork shown by the cadets at this time, as well as the hard work, organisation, initiative and perseverance of the cadet staff and leaders. On the 25th of April, the Monivae College Army Cadet Unit Band marched in the Melbourne parade for ANZAC day. With a band bigger than ever before, the band members, leaders - W.O.1 Kellie Mitchell and CPL Tahlia Mottram and the staff - with a special mention to Mrs Claire Toffolon and Mrs Alisa Houlihan, did a tremendous job. Their weeks of preparation lead to an outstanding performance in Melbourne. Many cadets gave up their time during the mid-year and September holidays to attend courses and the annual “Exercise Emu” camp at Puckapunyal. Well done for all of those who participated, this really shows your commitment to cadets. The activities and lessons that take place on these camps provide valuable experiences the cadets can use back at the unit and in their day-to-day life. A number of staff took part in courses earning new rank showing their hard work and involvement in the unit, congratulations to all. The end of year Ceremonial Parade, like the annual camp, had no luck with the weather. Despite the challenging conditions, the cadets endured the rain, wind and cold and the parade did not slow. The unit was privileged to have Lt Col Andrew Segrott, commander of 32 battalions present as the reviewing officer for the parade and his attendance at the senior leader’s cadet dinner. We are grateful for the help and on-going support Lt Col Segrott shows towards the unit. A massive congratulations to all the award recipients on the day and the hard work and time spent by everyone in preparation for the parade. This year marks the end of Capt Terry Molan position as O.C after being in charge of the unit for four years. We all thank you and commend you for the commitment, hard work and time you have given and shown to the unit. For the future leaders of the unit and the new O.C of the unit Lt Phil O’Keefe, good luck with the coming year and to all of the new challenges it will bring; I believe that you will all do an amazing job leading the Monivae Cadets. Finally, thank you to W.O.1 Aiden Rogers (RSM) for being a great partner to lead alongside with, I couldn’t have done it without you. To the Year 11 cadets, I hope you have all enjoyed your years in the Monivae College Army cadet unit as much as I have, thank you for all of your commitment and being there along the way. I look forward to seeing what the next year will bring for the cadet unit. Good luck to the cadets of 2020! CUO Jemma White Adjutant of the Monivae Cadet unit 60 Cadet Parade

The annual First XI match against College was a very tight match with College winning by 3 runs. Tom Letts took 3 for 19 and the first College wicket fell due to a very good catch on the boundary by Jacob Millard. Best with the bat were Vincent Huf with 43 including a couple very big sixes. Angus Harms was not out 25. We look forward to hosting College on our new oval next year. The Year 9/10 Super 8 T20 Carnival was held at Pedrina Park on a nice warm day, in what was perfect conditions for cricket. We had entered a total of four teams on the day, with those being a Year 9 boys and girls team, as well as a Year 10 boys a girls team. All teams played in a round robin competition which consisted of three rounds, with some teams having one bye meaning they only played the two games. After this there were finals played, with 1st vs 2nd being the main final to decide our two overall winners for the day. Our Year 10 boys played some good cricket at times throughout their games but were unlucky with a tough draw on the day. Some of the better performers included Vincent Huf and Hamish Cook. The Year 9 girls also put together some commendable cricket on the day, and also had a lot of fun along the way. Better individual performers included Paige Kissel and Portia Northcott. Our Year 9 boys, and Year 10 girls both performed well enough to qualify through to the 1 vs 2 final in their respective divisions. In what was a fantastic result for the school, we managed to win both the boys and girls divisions on the day, with both of these teams winning in the finals. The Year 9 boys had a fantastically well- rounded team of cricketers, with some better performers being Josh Gordan, Zach Burgess and Hamish Kearney. Better performers in the Year 10 girls’ team on the day were also hard to choose, but both Lexie Northcott and Tegan Menzel were fantastic on the day. Congratulations to Tom Letts on being awarded the Gavin? Hurley cricket award. We would also like to thank Gavin? For his generous donation of a new cricket bat as part of this award. With 40 school competing, I was very pleased to say that Monivae came 2nd by only 14 points. An enormous effort by the entire team to make sure that every race counted. These efforts certainly paid off with 12 students heading to the State swimming Championships. State Swimming Championships Twelve students ventured down to MSAC (Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre) for the State Swimming Championships. Satchell Biggin, Josh Jellie and Stella Raymond competed well in their respective races, their dedication and training to swimming was certainly obvious in the way they presented themselves. Satchell and Josh both swimming a personal best in their races. We had 3 relay teams compete at the State level. This was certainly an eye opener for some of these students, who hadn’t been to MSAC previously. It was fantastic to see that all three relay teams improved their times from the Regional finals by a minimum of 8 seconds. A fair effort by all the teams. Mrs Sarah Byron Sports Co-ordinator

AFL – Junior Boys The Year 7 & 8 football is a hotly contested competition between Monivae, Good Shepherd/Balmoral, Baimbridge and Hamilton and Alexandra College. Monivae Red went out hard from the get go which saw them win all four games and take out the competition. They met their school rivals Monivae Blue in their first game. After a tight battle Mr Johnson’s Monivae Reds had bragging rights. Monivae Blue led by Mr Fehsler, were out to prove themselves after the loss to Monivae Red, by winning very convincingly over Baimbridge and Good Shepherd. They just fell short of beating Hamilton College by 3 points.

AFL – Senior Girls The senior girls football team prepared very well for this year’s annual carnival. Numbers at all training sessions were most encouraging, and it made the task of reducing the final squad down to 23 players a difficult one. Nikki Menzel was a dedicated and skilful player within the group who trained with vigour and enthusiasm. She was unanimously selected by her peers to be our captain for this carnival and did a magnificent job. The team played with great spirit, enthusiasm and demonstrated a proficient skill level during all games. We played 6 games and were successful in 3, and unsuccessful in 3. Portland Secondary College and Hamilton Alexandra College (the eventual winners of the carnival) were a bit too skilful for us, but our girls were very competitive Most girls made varying contributions over the six games, but we did have some excellent players. Captain, Nikki Menzel was outstanding, no matter what position on the ground she was playing. Her skill level and determination was to be admired. Matilda “white line fever” Dohle was fantastic across our half back line, repelling many forward thrusts from the opposition and setting up our forwards with long kicks in. Also across half back was Eilish MacGillivray whose no-nonsense attack on the ball was example for her team mates to follow. Vania McCaskill was probably the “surprise packet” of our team. Vania just kept better and better as each game rolled around. Quite skilful, speedy and creative! All in all a very successful carnival for our senior girl footballers this year. Mr Terry Molan, Senior Girls Football Coach 71

AFL – Junior Girls

Monivae Red – Year 9 Monivae Red, consisting of Year 9 ran away the winners of the carnival after a hard-fought round robin. After suffering their only loss to Monivae Year 8’s, the older girls re-bounded to ensure they won every other match. As a result of their high scoring throughout the day, Monivae Red were crowned champions due to their superior percentage, holding off Heywood Secondary who finished 2nd and the Monivae Year 8 girls who finished an excellent 3rd. Monivae Red was coached by Mr Franc, who was ably assisted by Ms Byron. Nadine Bunge was awarded our best player of the day.

Monivae Blue – Year 8 Monivae Blue consisting of Yr 8 girls started the day strongly with a win over Hamilton and Alexandra College. The younger girls brought their best game when playing against the Yr 9 Monivae team, seeing them have bragging rights back at school. The girls eventually came 3rd overall behind Monivae Red and Heywood. Best player for the day was Keely Burland. Monivae Blue was coached by Indi Ryan (Yr 11) and Mrs Templeton. SSV Intermediate Hockey In October Monivae took two teams to compete in the School Sport Victoria (SSV) Intermediate hockey competition in Dimboola. It was a very successful day for both the boys’ and girls’ teams, with many goals scored, great defensive play and fantastic school spirit on display. The boys had a great first win against Horsham with a 4-0 score line reflecting the urgency of their play. Goals were scored by Zac Price (2), Jack Henderson and Sam Ness, amidst some excellent teamwork and defensive pressure. The boys were unlucky to come up against the ultimate winners of the day in their second game losing to Camperdown SC in a 0-3 loss. Congratulations to the boys and to their coach Mr. David Patience, for coming together as a group on the day and being really supportive of each other in warm conditions. The girls team had similar success – coming equal first on points but second overall on goal difference. In very short seven-minute halves, the challenge was to score goals quickly and the girls responded with determination to do just that. The team scored 11 goals for the day and Ruby Cook allowed nothing past her as goalie. Goals were scored by Lexie Northcott (8), Paige Kissel (2) and Tegan Menzel. The passages of teamwork were clean and strong, with all team members stepping up to tackle hard, run hard and keep the play fast in the heat. Their coach, Mr. Wayne Vearing was impressed with the optimism, self-belief and commitment of all the girls who left nothing on the pitch. Thanks, must go to Ms Sarah Byron for undertaking the long bus ride with us and for her pitch side presence supporting all players on the day. In August, the senior girls’ hockey team competed at the School Sports Victoria Hockey Championships in Melbourne. Two games were played on the day with the first game being a 1 -1 draw with Chiaro College, Drouin. This result galvanised the team into action for the second game which was a must-win scenario and the team lifted to the challenge scoring 7 goals to 1 for an emphatic win. The grand final took place immediately afterwards and this was a thrilling battle with the scores level at half time. A sneaky and clever goal by Vania McCaskill minutes before the end of the game ensured the victory for Monivae with a 2-1 scoreline. The win was a great relief to our team who has battled for a number of years to reach the final of this competition and it was great to come away with the title. Thanks must go to our to our old-collegians, Lisa Shelly and Casey White for coaching the team to victory in both competitions. Mrs Sofia Vearing Hockey Co-ordinator 73 Golf

On Monday the 9th of September, 12 students went to Hamilton Golf Club to represent the school in the GD Golf Competition. Thirty five eager Clay Target shooting students trained weekly throughout Term 3 to ensure that the Monivae Clay Target team was competitive at each of the 4 competitions. Two competitions of Field and Game and 2 of Down the Line, saw many of the students choose their favourite discipline to compete in. Many thanks to the two shooting captains Alistair Palmer and Ethan Smart for all their hard work and dedication throughout the season. At the Coleraine Field and Game, Monivae won the overall competition with the top shooters: Harry Clark, Ethan Smart, Justin Rundell and Tyler Ellis ensuring this would happen. Some top shooting results from our individuals were Jasmine Powell who came first in the Junior Girls, Justin Rundell, 1st in the Senior boys, and Tyler Ellis second in the Junior boys. Coming off a great start to the competition season, the team headed to Noorat for the South West School clay Target Championships competing against approximately 400 other students. Monivae held their own and once again won the overall day with the top team consisting of Caleb Creasey, Lachlan Kenny, Riley Dark and Justin Rundell. Also included in the team was Noah Cameron (transferred from another squad) who then went on to compete at the State School Championships. Congratulations also goes to Demi Taylor who won 1st in the Senior 75

girls, ensuring a place in the State competition as well. In Echuca at the State School Championships, Demi Taylor placed 3rd in her age group. The boys team (Caleb Creasey, Lachlan Kenny, Riley Dark, Justin Rundell and Noah Cameron) shot extremely well to come home with the overall win. The Minyip Field and Game competition is always a long hot day and this year was no different. After some very sharp shooting from many competitors, there was a count back, which saw Josh Jellie place 3rd in the senior boys members section. The Warrnambool Clay Target shoot is aimed at the Year 7-9 students, 13 students competed in this competition. Tom Clark, Caleb Creasey, Noah Cameron and Justin Rundell all shot 21 out of 24, which saw them in a shoot off for 2nd and 3rd in the Experienced boy’s category. The boys continued to shoot well and it went down to the last target. Noah Cameron taking out 3rd and Caleb Creasey 3rd. Mrs Sarah Byron Sports Co-ordinator
