Dear Friends and Neighbours As we enter June we move ever closer to a new sort of normal—whatever that may turn out to be. This new future that awaits us all will be different, our choices will be different , we may have less control in what we do but we keep moving forward. Who really knows with any certainty what the next 6 month, a year or ten years will bring ? When we look back over the last year and see that new normal—Zoom meetings, Working from Home, Wearing Masks it all seems like a different world. It could be the reality of what is to come. The World Health Organisation said recently that we will be socially distancing , wearing masks and vaccinating for several years to come. A sobering thought especially when we see the worldwide impact this crisis has had and is still having on those countries without vaccines. There has never been a greater need in our time for a United World to tackle the misery this virus brings . Stay safe! Janet

Whether it is pastoral care for the bereaved, discussions about the afterlife, or being called out to perform the last rites, death is part of the Rev. Richard Coles's life and work. But when his partner the Rev. David Coles died, shortly before Christmas in 2019, much about death took Coles by surprise. For one thing, David's death at the early age of forty-three was unexpected. The man that so often assists others to examine life's moral questions now found himself in need of help. He began to look to others for guidance to steer him through his grief. The flock was leading the shepherd. Much about grief surprised him: the volume of 'sadmin' you have to do when someone dies, how much harder it is travelling for work alone, even the pain of typing a text message to your partner - then realising you are alone. A deeply personal account of life after grief .

South Holland District Council

A polite mention to only put refuge goods out as late as possible after it has been identified that households within the District are putting their rubbish out on the wrong day. In total over the last 12 months 885 letters have been sent out to South Holland residents for putting their rubbish out too early. If bags are found in “no mans land” it may result in a letter drop in a particular street. Overall, the vast majority of residents do comply, but as summer looms, and the temperatures (hopefully) rise, putting waste out too early could lead to the attraction to vermin and rodents. Whilst on the topic of rubbish, it is sad to see the increase in reports of Fly-tipping within the area and across the district. These selfish and lazy act’s by mindless individuals infuriate Andrew, Anthony and Rodney as the cost to retrieve falls to the tax payer. However, there are several ways to find the culprits and if found guilty, prosecution will take place and heavy fines will be issued. If you see or come across Fly-tipping, please either report online at www.sholland.gov.uk, then hit the report button, then hit the report fly tipping button and enter the required information, or alternatively, contact one of your Ward Councillors (details below) . It’s so far, so good in respect of the easing of lockdown restrictions and it’s good to see people getting out and about more and able to support the local economy by spending their money in shops, pubs and restaurants. As we continue the roadmap for the easing of restrictions, please continue to be vigilant and together, we will soon become used to the “new normal”. Fish Pie

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5. 2. Boil potatoes until tender. Drain and mash them with the butter, crème fraîche and warm milk and season with salt and pepper. Set aside. 3. Heat the milk in a large pan, then add the smoked haddock and cod. Cut onion in half, make an incision in one of the halves and insert the bay leaf. Push the cloves into the same onion half and place this into the pan with the Ingredients milk and fish. Bring the milk to the boil, then For the Mash reduce the heat and simmer gently for 6 mins.  1kg potatoes, peeled and cut 4. Finely chop the remaining onion half and into 5cm chunks the leeks. Heat the butter with the olive oil in a  50g butter small frying pan and gently fry the onion and leeks for 4–5 minutes, until softened.  100g crème fraiche 5. Remove the fish from the pan, and set  3 tbsp. warm milk aside to cool slightly. Keep the milk in the pan.  Pinch salt and pepper 6. Add the flour to the leeks and stir well. Fry For the Filling for 1 minute, stirring frequently. Gradually  500ml milk spoon in the milk from poaching the fish, and  250g smoked haddock stir it in well each time. Add all the milk in this  200g cod loin way, and heat gently until the sauce has thickened. Taste the sauce for seasoning, and  1 onion add more salt or pepper if necessary.  1 bay leaf 7. Break the fish into chunks, being careful to  3 cloves (optional) feel for any bones and remove any skin, then  2 leeks, washed and chopped fold the fish pieces into the sauce. Add the raw  50g butter prawns and frozen peas to the mixture.  1 tbsp. olive oil 8. Place an ovenproof pie dish onto a baking  3 tbsp. plain flour tray . Spoon the fish mixture into the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle the parsley and lemon zest  100g raw king prawns over the top.  50g frozen peas 9. Top with the cooled mashed potato. Spread  1 tbsp. finely chopped parsley the mash over the pie and create a rough  I lemon – texture on top. Dot the pie with butter and place grate zest in the oven for 25–30 minutes, or until golden- brown and bubbling.

Cowbit Village Litter Pickers We have held 3 group litter picks around the village with around 20 volunteers on the first 2, which enabled us to clean all Barrier Bank from Drain Bank to the start of Peak Hill. The third last Sunday was an arranged smaller group due to the proximity and the amount of traffic, we worked from Moulton Chapel/Cowbit roundabout on the A16 towards Spalding as far as the layby. Also cleared the road verges between Drain Bank and the roundabout near Applegreen on Barrier Bank and have also done the same between Peak Hill and Cloot Drove. We have also put bins at the layby at Cloot Drove top near Four Mile Bar bridge and put a bin either side of the Welland at Four Mile Bar Bridge, and keeping an eye on the area in general. Cowbit Village

This June marks the 10th anniversary of the Cowbit Facebook group originally under a different name; it was set up as a support group for residents to organise fundraising for the following year's Golden Jubilee in 2012. At the time it was only considered to be temporary for a one-off event and after it was completed would be deleted, we didn’t even use a website for the village. By the time we had the Jubilee, social media had grown even more and the group had grown in members to over 200 and proved very useful at getting the message out to people very quickly. The following year we found we needed a second Facebook group to deal with all the commercial requests for businesses we were getting and swamping the posts of community information and questions. The Facebook group now has 1.9k members ; not all residents but the vast majority are connected to the village and is supported by a team of 5 admin members that look after the membership and make sure the rules are being followed. 10 years after and a year through Covid it has proven itself to be a valuable resource in a virtual world where online teaching and working is commonplace; and who knows what it will look like in the next 10 years. As we move towards the summer and restrictions are beginning to lift, let us look towards the future with hope, whilst maintaining a sense of awareness. The wider community has played an important part in supporting our pupils in adapting to the changes they have faced. Our school’s Christian value of Perseverance is once again evident throughout. Psalms 96 NKJV : Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! Sing to the LORD, all the earth… Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; Let the sea roar, and all its fullness; Let the field be joyful, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the woods will rejoice before the LORD. Summer 1 in Morpurgo -This term our Topic is called ‘What happens inside our bodies.’ As part of our Literacy work, we are reading ‘ The Pig Heart Boy’ by Malorie Blackman. This will lead us into writing a newspaper article about the boy with the pig heart. In order to understand the body, we wrote an information text about the heart and found out about the first heart transplant.

Oh my…what big teeth you have.! We learnt all about the different types of teeth and how to keep our teeth healthy. We then found out how the digestive system worked. A lunchtime game of handball proves a hit with the Morpurgo bubble. We are pleased to be holding after school clubs for each ‘bubble.’ R/Y1 enjoy outdoor games. Year 2/3 play football while another group go for a walk around on the farm track through the fields. Y4/5/6 pupils participate in Boxercise on Wednesdays and football on Fridays. This term in Dahl class, we have been investigating and exploring the importance of plants and trees. We have learnt that they produce oxygen, allow insects like bees to create honey and what they need to live. In this lesson, we dissected a tulip to identify all of the different parts. The children were excited to see what lay behind the petals in particular. We then glued the parts to our worksheets and labelled them. Donaldson Class have loved learning based around the story Jack and the Beanstalk. We have created miniature gardens and planted beans (hopefully they will grow up to the clouds so we can visit the giant but we think Jack Frost might have zapped them). The children have also planted beans in a plastic bag to watch the roots and shoots grow over time. We are very excited to see the changes and investigate why some have grown more than others.

THE HOLY SPIRIT

Dear Friends, As I write this, the Church’s liturgical season of Easter is about to draw to a close as we prepare to celebrate Ascension Day this coming Thursday (13 May) and Pentecost on Sunday 23 May. On Ascension Day we remember how Jesus, who had conquered death and risen from the dead, ascended to be with his Father in heaven. Pentecost, which you might know as Whitsun or Whit Sunday, is when we remember that God sent his Holy Spirit to be with the disciples after Jesus had ascended into heaven. You may remember the Bible story of the Holy Spirit coming to the disciples in a rushing wind, and with what appeared to be tongues of flame. God knew that, following Jesus’ ascension, the disciples would feel confused, lost and alone without Jesus, their Master and their Teacher, and Jesus himself had promised them that God would send his Advocate (or Companion or Guide) the Holy Spirit, to be with them. The good news for Christianity and for all of us is that, from then on, with renewed vigour, the disciples went about their work of setting up Church communities – the very foundations of the Church as we know it. The three members of the Holy Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit) are all equal – “Three in One, and One in Three” – and the Holy Spirit plays a role in our lives today in exactly the same way as in the lives of the disciples way back then. Like the disciples following Jesus’ resurrection, I’m sure that many of us during the past year or so have been feeling confused, lost, and alone, or perhaps much, much worse. I’m sure that even the most grounded of us will, at some point or other during that time, have experienced so many different feelings of uncertainty, confusion and loss, at the very least. We’re assured that better times are on the horizon. If we believe in God we’ll know his love and have the confidence of knowing that the Holy Spirit is forever working in us for our good, renewing and strengthening us, in the same way as in the disciples back then. Belief in God, and an acceptance that the Holy Spirit is forever with us can bring us an inner peace and an inner joy which can eclipse all our human uncertainties and concerns. I hope and pray that you will all know the presence of the Holy Spirit within you, as we look to the future together with renewed inner strength.

Over 400 years ago King Charles 1 commissioned Dutch Engineer Cornelius Vermuyden to design a scheme to turn the wetlands known as the Fens into farmland. The work started in 1630 when the Old Bedford River was dug in a straight line from Earith to Denver , channelling water from the fens to the sea. They built embankments and sluices and water channels known as Dykes. To control the risk of flood they created washes to store flood waters such as Cowbit Wash and the Ouse Wash reservoir ( the 3rd largest in England). The work was financed by a group called the Gentlemen Adventurers who were led by the Earl of Bedford. In return for their investment in the project they were given acres of the newly drained farmland.

The local people known as Fen Tigers rebelled, they relied on the fen for gathering reeds, hunting and fishing . Where they could they smashed dams and destroyed dykes . They would break sluice gates which then allowed parts of the fen to re-flood. To date we still have a tiger displayed on the Fenland Flag.

Vermuyden’s men dug the ditches and dykes by hand with hoddling spades. Sharp spades with very long handles that could cut through the heavy soil. In 1650 Cromwell’s army beat the Scottish army at the Battle of Dunbar and over 10,000 prisoners were marched south and set to work digging the drainage ditches and dykes.

WESTON PARISH COUNCIL

Dear Parishioners

At May’s AGM of Weston Parish Council, I was re-elected as your Chairman and Julian Bellamy was re-elected as your Vice Chairman and it is this Council’s pledge to support all Parishioners when the need arises. All residents should now be aware that the junction of Broadgate & Beggars Bush Lane has been finalised, and I would appeal to all residents to comply with the new signs. We have been contacted by two separate organisations to enhance the use of Weston Park, one is a Nature Trail and the other is for Forest Sessions. It is hoped to encourage these projects to Weston Hills which will be dependent on the organisation’s resources. Both projects aim to enlighten both children & adults towards the environment we live in and when further information is at hand, we will notify residents through the Oracle and other Social Platforms. As a Council we are determined to support in every way any worthwhile Community Project. The allowance of dogs at the parks has been raised again and the Council are looking into this, hence the assessments at the parks, however the Council’s governing body along with our Insurers have clearly stated that it is the dog owner’s responsibility to always control their dogs, even if it means keeping them on the lead whilst in the parks. Weston Playing Field play equipment was independently assessed recently, and two items are no longer available for use due to wear and tear, one is the normal style swings and the other is the ‘A’ frame swing with the rubber tyre, both have been deactivated and the Council will be looking at alternative swings etc. The new Speed Indicator Device at Austendyke Rd has been up and running for the past three weeks and some of the data produced is quite alarming, with vehicles being recorded at over 80mph and on one occasion 100mph. We are currently looking at ways to use this data to arrange for Police intervention and to this end the CSW group will be targeting the Austendyke Rd junction with Broadgate to add to the data already collected. With regards to the proposed development on the High Rd, Weston I have been informed that the next SHDC Planning Committee meeting is not scheduled until the 30th of June. We have also just received an Outline Application for 8 properties fronting the High Rd, Weston with a “Future Access “road between the properties, this is clearly to accommodate the original application for 51 properties on that Agricultural Land, which is still at the Outline Application stage, but I suspect will appear soon on the Planning List of SHDC. We will as usual look very carefully at any Full Applications that apply to both villages and make the necessary objections if justified.

WESTON PARISH COUNCIL On May 4th the Council held what is expected to be its last meeting via zoom. It is hoped that the next meeting scheduled for Monday July 5th will be a return to face to face meetings. However at the current time the Council is unsure where the meeting will take place as the village halls are currently closed. As always the opportunity is there for members of the public to join the meeting as there will be the usual fifteen minute open forum at the start of meetings for any member of the public to have their say on any matters which may affect them. Our summer term has included some immersive, hands on learning, with the children in Cherry Class embracing the theme of summer with their ‘Oh I do like to be beside the seaside’ topic. Reading and retelling the story of the ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ has provided inspiration to the children in designing their own lighthouses and picnic baskets. The children also enjoyed making sandwiches and sharing a picnic lunch on the grass. Talking about the ingredients of the sandwiches and how they would be made encouraged the children to write lists and instructions as part of their English work. Holly class have also been embracing the theme of summer, investigating sunglasses and their lenses. They talked about how it was never safe to look at the sun, even when wearing sunglasses and how sunglasses are a great idea on a sunny day. They made their own funky sunglasses to wear at home. Music plays a very important part in our life at school. The benefits of music education to children in schools are wide ranging and include developing cognitive and listening skills, improving coordination and increasing confidence and self-esteem. In music this term, each class has been working with Boomwhackers; tuned percussion tubes which are unique and wonderful instruments. The children really enjoy using these to play along with favourite tunes following prompts on the classroom smart boards. We are also expanding our work with Lincolnshire Music Service who have been providing whole class music lessons to Holly and Willow classes this term on a weekly basis. We have been using samba drums and ukuleles and focussing on rhythm work and singing. The children have loved the opportunity to explore different types of music and play new instruments. As we look forward to the rest of the term, we have some exciting events planned to enable the children to benefit from a wealth of experiences to compensate for outings that have not been able to go ahead this year. We have chosen activities that can visit us in school and which children across all of our year groups will enjoy. These include a visit from a mobile farm who will bring friendly farm animals and small animals for the children to meet and a planetarium which will give an exciting visual display of the night sky. We will also be having a climbing day using a mobile climbing wall, a skipping workshop and den building workshop and having a ‘Virtual Reality’ day using VR headsets. We are extremely grateful to our PTA, the Friends of Weston Hills (FOWHS) for their ongoing support and fundraising. This year has provided many challenges to raising funds as some of the usual annual school events, such as the Christmas fayre, have been unable to go ahead. The FOWHS have found new and inventive ways to raise money for our school in these adverse times, including through making and selling fabric facemasks. Further fundraising activities are planned for the near future including a Father’s Day wrap. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated and active PTA supporting our school. 18
