Bongo, Sitatunga, Forest Elephant, Buffalo and Duikers There are several types of hunting in the rainforest: 1. Tracking ("moves out" without dogs) (primarily Buffalo and Elephant) 2. Hunting with hounds (Bongo, Sitatunga, Buffalo) 3. Hunting from the elevation (in salt lick, in any game species) 4. Hunting by calling: Duikers and Buffalo

The most important by hunting in the rainforest is the rain. After the rain, the game moves into the night on the streets and open spaces, and make fresh tracks the next morning. The hunting season in the rainforest is from late March to early July. At this time it rains a few times a week. Temperatures at this time during the day 30-32 ° C, in rain or at night 15-20 ° C with high humidity.

The hunt begins in the early morning hours with the help of a 4X4 vehicle searching for fresh tracks. When a fresh track gets found of a Bongo or the hunt starts. We only track with the help of pygmy bushman and hunting dogs single solitaire . The track of the single tells us if it is a male or a female. Of course we only follow male animals. The jungle is very dense and you can see only 7-20 meters. The Pistuere ( trackers ) cut the path with machetes or wooden tongs to make the way easier for the hunter. The well trained dogs focus on the fresh tracks of the Bongos or Sitatungas and do not follow other game. The tracking can take 1 hour or up to 5 hours. By tracking the dogs are always around the hunter and Pisteures and don’t go far and hunt by there owen. Just the last 100meters before the bongo or Sitatunga the dogs go to the animal and try to stop If the Bongo has a good trophy size and a corresponding age the hunter takes him. Is the Bongo too young the dogs will be called back and we are looking for a new track.

The hunt for Sitatunga is similar. The problem hunting with dogs on Sitatunga is that it is not easy to stop it with dogs. The bongo is more aggressive animals and start to fight with the dogs by contact. The sitatunga trys to escape to the next .If this is happen the dogs and Pistuere have no chance to find it anymore. In general, you need 4-5 tracks to get one. Another way to hunt Sitatunga, Buffalo and Bongo is the hunting out of stands ( Machans ) nearby marshes or open meadows, where salt licks are present.

Forest Elephant are tracked without dogs. Because of the dense forest only single bulls will be tracked . Forest Elephants are in general very aggressive against people. The Pistueres use on the hunting of Elephants and forest Buffalo wooden tongs to avoid noise, close and open the jungle for the hunter. The Elephants in the rain forest reach a live weight of about 3-3.5 tonnes and are therefore also called dwarf elephants. This is a separate of elephants. The ivory has a beautiful pink to black color and reaches today, unfortunately, only an average weight of 8-10 kg. The buffalo are also small and only reach a weight of 350 kg and are usually have a red or dark skin. The hunt on this two species is very challenging and great adventure in the rainforest . Forest Duikers we hunt with calling. Our pygmy pisteures are well trained in the calling. On duiker hunting we do calls every 400 meter in a more open place in the forest. We start calling for about 5 minutes. If no duikers are coming on the call we will change the position. For this of hunt we hunt this special antilopes with shotguns. Shot guns are available in the camp and you do not bring your own gun. There are many Duikers in the area. The most occurring are Blue Duiker, Bay Duiker, Duiker Peters and Bates Pygmy .

GETTING THERE The arrival of the safari in the rainforest is via Douala. The transfer to the hunting area is by air charter. The air charter is shared by several hunters who hunt in other camps. Thats why we have for the safaris fixed hunting dates. The meteorological conditions can change quickly in the tropical rainforest zone. It is possible that the air charter plane cannot depart from the area as planned because of bad weather. It is therefore important to book flexible tickets for the flight home. Furthermore, it is recommended to arrive to Douala, one or two days before the transfer to the hunting area is planned. If luggage is lost by commercial airlines you will have a extra day to receive it. (Air Charter cannot be moved) The camp is located 1.400 km away from Douala, and thus can lead to high extra costs if we need to drive your luggage by car to the hunting area..
