International Research Partnerships Between Switzerland and Indonesia Background Information The Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) is the federal government's body for national and international matters concerning education, research and innovation policy. SERI commissioned ETH Zurich as Leading House for the S&T collaboration with countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Mauro Dell'Ambrogio, State Secretary for SERI, will open the workshop and Mr. Thomas Kupfer, the Swiss Ambassador to Singapore, will close it. ETH Zurich, one of the leading international universities for technology and the natural sciences, will host the workshop at its Singapore ETH Centre SEC. SEC itself is a good example of bilateral collaboration between Singapore and Switzerland. ETH Zurich’s Future Cities Laboratories will be visited as part of the workshop. Back-to-back to the workshop swissnex Singapore will celebrate its 10th anniversary as the Swiss agency promoting collaborative innovation, science, education, and entrepreneurship. Boër Shi Bodong, MSE University of Applied Sciences and Arts Guangdong University of Technology of Southern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland Introduction The Sino-swissnex Center (SsC) started its activities officially on January 2010. It is a joint center between GDUT – Guangdong University of Technology and SUPSI – University of Applied Science of Southern Switzerland with the main purpose to help cooperation between Swiss Universities of Applied Science (but also other universities are supported if required) and Pearl River Delta universities with main aim between SUPSI and GDUT. The SsC is funded by SUPSI for the salary of an assistant. Prof.Boër is funded in equal part by swissnex-China and SUPSI. GDUT provides logistic and management support. Main activities and results during 2010 Agreement SCUT – SUPSI After long negotiations, it was possible to reach an agreement between SCUT – South China University of Technology and SUPSI (see Appendix). SCUT is ranked 24th in China and with a very good reputation specifically in Engineering (ranked 10th within Engineering University). A delegation from SCUT visited Switzerland and SUPSI on September 23rd, 2010. Agreement GPNU – SUPSI After three visits and presentations at GPNU – Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University in Guangzhou, an MOU was signed in July 2010 (see Appendix). The GPNU is an interesting case for the UAS because it has followed a similar path as the creation of the UAS in Switzerland and it is very much structured like an UAS towards practical teaching and training.

    swissnex leadership team Deucher Vilchis Gioia, swissnex Brazil After spending four years as the Head of Startup and Innovation Services for swissnex San Francisco, Gioia Deucher is now taking the lead in opening a new swissnex office in Brazil. Gioia graduated in International relations in Geneva and pursued a Master in the same field. From this point on, she dedicated her career to microfinance, entrepreunership and development in emerging markets with a strong focus on Brazil. In 2006, she moved to Brazil to work on a survey about access to financial services in rural Brazil and to work on a microfinance start-up project. After this, she completed a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University in Massachussets. Gioia's thesis was entitled " The Market for Microfinance in Brazil: an Industry Analysis". After her studies she worked as an Investment Officer Assistant for Latin America at a financial firm with a focus on Brazil. She left the United States to go to Jersusalem as a consultant for UNRWA's Microfinance program. Back in Switzerland, she worked for a major Swiss bank in the Global Asset Management in the Socially Responsible Investments department before returning to the United States to begin working at swissnex San Francisco. Serena Cangiano Researcher at SUPSI Serena Cangiano (1982) is researcher and coordinator of the Master of Advanced Studies in interaction design at SUPSI (University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland) where she develops applied research projects and teaches the design of interactive physical artifacts. She applies interaction design methods and a human-centred design perspective to develop research projects focusing on people’s experiences mediated by the internet and digital technologies. She develops educational models that explore the convergence of technology and design via prototyping and that promote the integration of bottom-up innovation models and community-driven approaches in design research and education. She works on the definition of academic and non-academic curricula and programs on the basics of interaction design, physical computing, open design, DIY electronics, digital fabrication, data visualisation, computational design (for designers, artists, makers).

    SEARCH Systematic Explanatory Analyses of Risk factors affecting Cardiovascular Health in Brazil, China, India and Mexico Overview and stakeholders In collaboration with Editorial In January 2013, Swiss Re and the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) created SEARCH – Systematic Explanatory Analyses of Risk factors affecting Cardiovascular Health – to better understand the relationship between risk factors and health outcomes. As the world’s second largest reinsurer, Swiss Re seeks more accurate projections of global morbidity and mortality. HSPH seeks to better understand the most important determinants of health and to improve health status globally. Swiss Re and the Swiss Re Foundation are funding this joint research initiative, which coincides with the 100-year anniversary of the Harvard School of Public Health and the 150-year anniversary of Swiss Re. The initial focus of SEARCH is on the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke. The collaboration focuses on four countries: Brazil and Mexico in Latin America, and China and India in Asia. These four countries are flagships for rapid development and rapid evolution of a variety of risk factors that will determine morbidity, mortality and longevity. Eleven postdoctoral fellows have been awarded grants to conduct research based on existing data sets/cohorts. Each fellow has a mentor at HSPH and Swiss Re. HSPH and Swiss Re have a history of collaboration that goes back more than a decade. The past two years have led to a conviction that our goals and strategy overlap and are synergistic. Our interactions have been productive and enjoyable and we expect to gain more clarity into health and disease risk factors which will provide a significant contribution to the understanding of future mortality and longevity trends.
