Katie Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas
Katie was just three years old when her mother died.
It was about a year later when her father took her to Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas for the first time. Going home after one of the early visits, she told her father “I like coming here. I have a soft tummy here.” For The Witte Museum Katie, like many other children, the stress of her grief manifested itself not as a headache but as a “tummy ache.” CBCST offered her many opportunities to express her feelings in play: art, drama, music, and storytelling.
Now Katie is a vibrant teenager, a straight-A student, First Chair Oboe in the Honors Band, a budding actress and a Biblical storyteller.
Through The Charity Ball Association’s support of CBCST, “soft tummies” are possible every day for children of our community just like Katie who have experienced loss.

Reid San Antonio Children’s Museum Patsy Sebesta Reid is an energetic 2 year old. He loves cars, Nancy Hollimon trucks and trains. At the San Antonio Children’s Museum he particularly loves the sandbox, balls and shopping at the H-E-B model grocery store.
Reid has been visiting SACM regularly since he was 10 months old. Beginning with the Tot Spot, he was provided a safe space where he could run, play and learn with a true sense of freedom. Even now “at home I have to guide him through games and activities, but at the Children’s Museum he gets to lead me,” raves Reid’s mom. He attends Tinker and Tales and has participated in the Music Together program, exposing him to the arts and music while interacting with other young children.
This year, The Charity Ball Association partnered in funding the construction of interactive water stations, waterfalls, water wheels and machines demonstrating the physical properties and the amazing power of water at the new SACM location to support “joyful learning and discovering.”

Christian Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children
Born profoundly deaf, Christian joined the Sunshine Cottage program when he was 3 months old. When his parents first learned he was deaf, they were devastated. They worried that they would not be able to hear their child say the words every parent longs to hear… “I love you Mommy and Daddy…”
An ENT physician referred the family to Sunshine Cottage, an internationally renowned program in their home town.
Now at 4 years old, Christian wears two cochlear implants; he talks, laughs and sings—happy in his Pre-Kinder classroom. He is articulate and inquisitive beyond hearing 4-year-olds.
With a grant funded by The Charity Ball Association, Christian and children like him are afforded the ability to “test-drive” hearing aids through the Hearing Aid Loaner Program. This program provides parents the time to plan and budget before undertaking the major expense of purchasing hearing aids.

Scarlett Good Samaritan Community Services Eleanor O’Gorman
When Scarlett first came to Good Samaritan Community Services at 2 years of age, she was an anxious, completely non-verbal little girl with delayed motor skills.
After receiving consistent quality care from the teachers and staff in Child Development Services at GSCS, she is now a different child. Scarlett is speaking in complete sentences. She knows all of her colors, shapes, animals, the alphabet and numbers 1 to 50. She can get herself dressed without any adult assistance and her motor skills are on target for her age. With her anxiety gone, she is very social; she now laughs and plays with the other children in her class and loves to have her picture taken!
The Charity Ball Association has been a significant source of support for the GSCS mission “to serve as a catalyst for change, supporting individuals and families by providing excellent community services to overcome the impact of poverty.” CBA funding has helped furnish classrooms, provided computers for teachers and children, sponsored parent education and created a unique environmental playground where children explore and learn in age-appropriate play spaces.

Christian Autism Community Network
Christian is an energetic 4-year old who Camilla Mixon was diagnosed with autism at Autism Community Network in 2012.
Following Christian’s diagnosis, his family began to attend workshops provided by ACN to learn more about his diagnosis and find solutions to cope with his autism. The ACN Hands-on Training Program pairs the family and child with a therapist. The therapist teaches families how to manage problem behaviors and sensory difficulties and how to increase social interactions. These are the issues with which autistic children struggle. To help Christian reach his full potential, his family now uses the techniques they have learned.
The Charity Ball Association funds ACN’s Parent and Caregiver Training Program which empowers and informs parents of children with autism and other developmental delays. These programs provideknowledge and skills, helping families maximize their child’s potential.

Cindy Huey Xochitl and Christopher San Antonio Sports Foundation
Siblings Xochitl and Christopher learned about a variety of sports when they were introduced to San Antonio Sports’ i play! after school program.
Thanks to SASF, the Bonham Academy students have the opportunity to learn and play sports including volleyball, tennis, and track and field. The program taught them the importance of staying active and gave them lifelong skills of teamwork and focus. Their grandmother is grateful. “You’re giving them something: a love of sports or learning a physical activity that they can carry on for a lifetime.”
San Antonio Sports’ i play! after school was launched in 2008 to expose underserved students to opportunities for success Mary Benedum through sports. The program also provides nutrition and character education to students in 15 elementary schools in SAISD and Harlandale ISD.
The Charity Ball Association has been an essential part of the program by funding the sports equipment which helps San Antonio Sports fulfill its mission “to transform our community through the power of sports.”

Sergio Daughters of Charity Services of San Antonio (DePaul Family Center)
In the beginning Sergio was delayed in his language and motor skill development.
Upon the recommendation of his aunt who had two children enrolled there, Sergio was enrolled at the DePaul Children’s Center by his mother. Once he started attending the Center, he was able to access additional services such as Brighton Center’s Early Childhood Intervention program.
Specialists from Brighton worked with Sergio during the weekdays he attended the Center. The on-site behavioral counselor at DePaul also helped Sergio and his mother identify additional services which would be beneficial. He entered the DePaul Children’s center a struggling one-year- old, but today he is an energetic 3-year-old who is on task with other children his age.
The Charity Ball Association funded a grant for furnishings for the new DePaul-Wesley’s Children’s Center that opened August 2013.

DuJuan Ella Austin Community Center
DuJuan and his family are originally from New Orleans. His family suffered great Linda Hill Ellen O’Gorman loss from Hurricane Katrina moving first to Shreveport and Dallas before making their home in San Antonio.
DuJuan will be in 4th grade this fall and has been in the Youth Development Program at Ella Austin for three years. This program is a year-round safe haven for youth primarily from the Eastside of San Antonio. He said that what he likes best about the program is “having help with his homework (academic tutoring), computer time and games (recreational activities). It sure feels a lot better now that we have the right temperature.”
DuJuan was referring to the new HVAC unit that The Charity Ball Association provided to the program. Before this, the youth and staff experienced hot classrooms in the summer and had to wear extra garments in the cold classrooms during winter. Now the classrooms are comfortable and more conducive to learning year-round.

Nia Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio
Nia will be the first to tell you how dramatically Kathryn LeFlore her life changed since she joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio. After her father died when she was four, her mom worked multiple jobs while Nia cared for her brother. She attended six Memory Lane schools—never feeling a part of anything. “There MONOGRAMS AND GIFTS always seemed to be a piece missing. I was looking for something, anything to fill that emptiness.” Terrie Musselman She found that missing piece at nine when she joined the Clubs. “[I feel] love, encouragement, and support every time I walk through that door.” Today, Nia is an honor student, volunteers extensively and has participated in four sports. She plans to attend Baylor University. Recently she successfully competed to become the BGCA Regional Youth of the Year. The Clubs transformed Nia’s life from one of possibility to one that is full of promise.
This year, The Charity Ball Association funded computers and robotic/mounting kits for the Learning and Technology Center in the new Lone Star neighborhood clubhouse.

Adrian San Anto Cultural Arts Lee Anne and Stuart Hendry Mrs. Hendry Vice President Prizes Adrian is an artistically-inclined teen who lives on the west side of central San Antonio where only 47% of residents have a high school diploma. A recent graduate of the Henry Ford Academy: Alameda School for Art + Design, Adrian heard about San Anto Cultural Arts through a presentation at his high school. Adrian joined the Community Mural & Public Art Program.
While working on a metal bicycle rack, local metal artist Casey Cooper taught Adrian metal design, metal cutting, welding, coating and painting, important skills that incorporate mathematical calculations. He and his fellow program participants ultimately built a “Paleta” which now serves as both a public art landmark and a place to safely park bicycles.
With the help of The Charity Ball Association and the new construction it has funded, San Anto Cultural Arts will continue to engage at-risk youth in inspiring activities that increase their capacity to be thriving adults and empower them to contribute dynamic pieces of art to San Antonio.

Joe The Children’s Shelter
Joe was only one and a half when he entered the emergency shelter with his three siblings. He was brought into care when his younger brother tested positive for drugs at birth. His mom was only 22. After a 3 month stay at the Shelter, Joe and his siblings were separated and placed with different foster families.
When he was first placed, Joe did not talk. He was typically seen with his hand in his mouth and was very shy. Throughout his time in care, he received services from Shelter staff and community specialists. After several months in foster care, parental rights were terminated. One of the Shelter’s adoptive families stepped forward to provide a forever home for all four of the children. Today, Joe is an outgoing and happy child. Joe now enjoys life in a loving family reunited with his siblings.
Barbara and Ken Harrison In 2013, The Charity Ball Association funded improvements in technology to better support the clients of The Children’s Shelter and its programs.
