The series intends to host reflections on librarianship and related disci- plines, essays on the function of libraries and its languages and services, monographs on the relationships between the history of libraries, the his- tory of library science and the history of the profession. Mangani e L. Tongiorgi Tomasi (Ancona, il lavoro editoriale, 2013) PREFAZIONE Le Marche hanno avuto nei secoli numerosi personaggi che hanno primeggiato nelle arti, nella letteratura, nella musica, nelle scienze, nelle armi, vestito abiti religiosi non tutti raffi- gurati nel grande dipinto di Bruno d’Arcevia esposto nel pa- lazzo dell’Assemblea Legislativa. Uno di questi è il nobile principe Gherardo Cibo, nato a Ge- nova nel 1512, trasferitosi a Roma, dove intraprese viaggi per l’Europa. Dopo il Sacco dei Lanzichenecchi con la madre, la zia e la sorella visse fino alla morte nello stupefacente Rinasci- mento di Roccacontrada oggi Arcevia. L’assenza di Gherardo nel recente dipinto è anche dovuta al lungo silenzio calato con la sua morte, nel 1600. Ma Lucia Tongiorgi Tommasi dell’Università di Pisa e Giorgio Mangani editore con la pregevole, voluminosa pubblicazione illustrata, Gherardo Cibo dilettante di botanica e pittore di Paesi (Ancona, il lavoro editoriale) lo hanno “riportato in vita” nel 2013, nel cinquecentesimo anniversario della sua nascita. Siamo doverosamente ben grati ai curatori anche per questa molto significativa sintesi pubblicata nella collana “I Quader - ni del Consiglio”. Un lavoro così completo e prestigioso è stato accompagna- to da una adeguata promozione sostenuta dalla Regione Marche, dalla Fondazione Carifac, dal Comune di Arcevia e dall’Accademia Misena di Roccacontrada, Associazione cul- turale che riunisce i discendenti di molti altri illustri concit- tadini. -

CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Institutional Research Information System University of Turin 1 Cristina Dondi and Maria Alessandra Panzanelli Fratoni1 Researching the origin of Perugia’s Public Library (1582/1623) before and after Material Evidence in Incunabula Introduction Among the many research topics that the database Material Evidence in Incunabula (MEI) can help to investigate, the reconstruction of historical libraries presently dispersed is certainly one of its most powerful outcomes.2 Libraries around Europe and the United States merge into MEI the description of the copy specific features of their incunabula, including the recording of former ownership. This way, the disiecta membra of historical collections whose whereabouts are unknown to the libraries that today host fragments of such collections, are being brought together by a search engine. The multiple locations of a dispersed collection are immediately visible in the new MEI thanks to the default facets presentation by ‘Present Holding Institution’. To offer just one example, by typing “San Giorgio Maggiore” or “Georgius maior” in the free text search, MEI will display the 78 copies so far recorded as coming from the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. They are now preserved in Padua, Biblioteca Universitaria (33 copies), Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France (8 copies), Chantilly, Musée Condé (2 copies), Manchester, John Rylands Library (2 copies).3 Individual copies are found in Brescia Queriniana, Locarno 1 C. Publishing for the Popes: The Cultural Policy of the Catholic Church towards Printing in Sixteenth-Century Rome Paolo Sachet A dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Combined Historical Studies The Warburg Institute University of London 2015 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Paolo Sachet 2 Abstract Printing had a huge impact on the development of religion and politics in sixteenth-century Europe. Harnessing the printing press is generally regarded as a key factor in the success of the Reformation. The positive role played by printing in Catholic cultural policy, by contrast, has not been sufficiently recognized. While scholars have focused on ecclesiastical censorship, the employment of print by Catholic authorities – especially the Roman curia – has been addressed only sporadically and superficially. The aim of my dissertation is to fill this gap, providing a detailed picture of the papacy’s efforts to exploit the resources of the Roman printing industry after the Sack in 1527 and before the establishment of the Vatican Typography in 1587. After a brief introduction (Chapter 1), I provide an exhaustive account of the papacy’s attempts, over sixty years, to set up a Roman papal press (Chapter 2). I then focus on two main Catholic printing enterprises. Part I is devoted to the editorial activity of Cardinal Marcello Cervini, later Pope Marcellus II. I discuss the extant sources and earlier scholarship on Cervini (Chapter 3), his cultural profile (Chapter 4) and the Greek and Latin presses which he established in the early 1540s (Chapters 5-6).
