  • Newsletter November 2002-11-08
Members’ Newsletter: March 2008 TO ALL VCT MEMBERS: You are cordially invited to attend the Opening by the Mayor of Keighley of Vintage Carriages Trust’s Special Exhibition marking the 40th Anniversary of the Grand Re-Opening of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. On: Saturday 22nd March 2008 At: the Vintage Carriages Trust’s Museum of Rail Travel Time: 2.15 for 2.35 pm. RSVP! If you are intending to be present please contact Dave Carr (VCT Honorary Secretary) by phone on 01759 304176, by email at [email protected] or by post to Dave Carr, Vintage Carriages Trust, c/o The Railway Station, Haworth, Keighley, West Yorkshire BD22 8NJ. VCT’s tribute to the KWVR - 40 years since Re-Opening Above is your invitation to the launch of VCT’s Special Exhibition in tribute to the 40th Anniversary of the Re-Opening of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway – the first train left Keighley at 2.35 pm on Saturday 29th June 1968. As you will remember from the last Newsletter, we applied to the Big Lottery for a grant of £5,000 to stage this tribute to the Railway and give an opportunity for local people to celebrate this achievement. Unfortunately the Big Lottery was not able to support this application. However, our Chairman (never one to be deterred by set- backs) has worked towards gathering some funds, which, although not as substantial as the hoped-for grant would have been, do ensure that the planned Exhibition will go ahead. Thanks are due to those Members who donated towards this project – obviously your contributions are still very welcome due to the absence of this grant money.

It was built between 1892 and 1894 because of the high number of shipwrecks that were occurring at Withernsea when vessels could not see the lights at either Spurn Head or Flamborough. It was not designed to be lived in, the tower has no dividing floors only the spiral staircase leading to the Service and Lamp Rooms at the top. The Lighthouse was decommissioned at the end of June 1976 and is now a museum of memorabilia about the RNLI Coastguards and local history. The museum also houses an exhibition on the life of actress Kay Kendall (1926-1959) who was a film star in the 1950s. She was born in the town and died of leukaemia. Proposed installation of antennas and ancillary development at existing telecommunications base station, Withernsea Lighthouse, Hull Road, Withernsea, HU19 2DY Planning/Heritage/Design & Access Statement The following has been provided to accompany the planning application for the addition of 3x no antennas, ground based apparatus and ancillary development at the above address. The development site lies within Withernsea. It is located on a listed building. Application Site Due to the small-scale nature of the proposed development at an existing telecommunications base station, this statement is being kept purposefully short as a proportionate response to the anticipated impacts from the proposal. There are 31 different planning applications which are listed with the property with a number of these reacting to both planning applications and listed building consent applications for communications apparatus dating back to 1996. We will not repeat all of these here and the Council will obviously hold all this planning history. The most recent of these ‘telecommunications’ applications was submitted in 2015 and involved the upgrade of the Cornerstone apparatus with the removal of 4 antennas and installation of 6 (with associated development). There was also an associated listed building consent application. • 15/01678/PLB • 15/01676/PLF This is considered to be the most relevant material consideration in the case of the application. The response from the conservation officer stated: NO OBJECTION - Withernsea Lighthouse is a late Victorian grade II Listed Building, erected in 1892 to 1893. Under section 16 (2) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, local authorities when considering whether to grant listed building consent for any works the local planning authority or the Secretary of State shall have special regard to the desirability of preserving the building or its setting or any features of special architectural or historic interest which it possesses.

  • Viking: Rediscover the Legend
Highlights from Viking: Rediscover the Legend A British Museum and York Museums Trust Partnership Exhibition at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery 9 February to 8 September 2019 1.The Cuerdale Hoard Buried Circa 904AD Made up of more than 8,600 items including silver coins, English and Carolingian jewellery, hacksilver and ingots, the Cuerdale Hoard is one of the largest Viking hoards ever found. The bulk of the hoard is housed at the British Museum. It was discovered on 15 May 1840 on the southern bank of a bend of the River Ribble, in an area called Cuerdale near to Preston, in Lancashire. It is four times in size and weight than any other in the UK and second only to the Spillings Hoard found on Gotland, Sweden. The hoard is thought to have been buried between 903 and 910 AD, following the expulsion of Vikings from Dublin in 902. The area of discovery was a popular Viking route between the Irish Sea and York. Experts believe it was a war chest belonging to Irish Norse exiles intending to reoccupy Dublin from the Ribble Estuary. 2. The Vale of York Hoard Buried 927–928AD The Vale of York Viking Hoard is one of the most significant Viking discoveries ever made in Britain. The size and quality of the material in the hoard is remarkable, making it the most important find of its type in Britain for over 150 years. Comprising 617 coins and almost 70 pieces of jewellery, hack silver and ingots, all contained with a silver-gilt cup; it tells fascinating stories about life across the Viking world.
