Bölgenin yerleşim dokusu, tarih içerisinde önemli değişimler geçirmiş, yıllar boyunca ortaya çıkan kültürel katmanlar değişerek günümüzdeki yoğun yerleşim özelliğine kavuşmuştur. Geçmişten beri oluşan bu değişim ve tarihi birikim, günümüzde fiziksel açıdan tam olarak görünebilir durumda değildir. Ancak kültürel olarak bölgenin özelliğini yansıtan ve alanın geçmişi ile ilgili bilgiler veren kayıtlar olmaları açısından sokak adları birer belge olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bu kapsamda, Beşiktaş İlçesi’ndeki 23 mahallede toplam 1060 adet sokak adı (yolakadı) incelenmiştir. Sokak adlarında, peyzajın doğal ve kültürel bileşenlerini oluşturan etmenlerle ilgili adlandırmalar peyzaj terimi olarak tanımlanmış ve elde edilen terimler; arazi örtüsü, bitki, doğa olayları, donatı, kültürel öğeler, mevsim, su ve topoğrafya gibi sınıflamalar altında derlenmiştir. Peer-reviewed paper Melih Birik, Kırklareli University, Turkey Abstract “Water”, the main signifier of Istanbul had different meanings for the city specifically starting from Haliç (also known as the Golden Horn) to the Bosphorus. During the long period of urbanization, Haliç became the backbone of integrated historical sites that encounters different morphologic characteristics. Despite deep cultural, social and geographical roots integrating its identity with the water, today Istanbul’s city centre is under the risk of turning its back on the waterfront because of currently planned spatial interventions. Lack of connections and flows are separating this vibrant city centre from the coastline. In this assessment, the spatial qualifications of the waterfront of Beyoğlu Peninsula examined according to morphologic values in order to re-associate it with its hinterland. During the 1950s and 60s, a modernizing ideology of new production methods guiding the spatial planning policies had transformed the waterfront of Istanbul, creating barriers between the city centre and the water. Especially, along the Beyoğlu Peninsula following the coastline from Besiktas to the Halic shipyard the barriers have a massive effect. While the new urban planning ideology of the 80s was predicting the decentralization program for waterfront, the city centre has had a new chance to create the potential for the use of spatial voids within the solid structure of the old urban fabric. Unfortunately, during the last decade, these potential public areas, consisting of warehouses, shipyards, industrial plants and customhouses of mostly industrial heritage buildings were enclosed in privatization programs under the guidance of a real estate market based on certain urban transformation policies.

    Reading the LGBT Movement through its Spatiality in Istanbul, Turkey Ozlem Atalay* and Petra L. Doan** Florida State University This article reviews the development of the LGBT movement in Turkey and ar- gues that the existing literature provides an incomplete analysis of the relationship between this movement and the urban spaces that enabled it. We approach the LGBT movement literature with the questions of ‘What is the relation between neighborhoods changing under the neoliberal policies and the LGBT movement? How has the LGBT movement responded to such spatial changes?’. To answer these questions, we divide our article into two main sections. In the first part, we review the existing studies that focus on the LGBT movement in Turkey to briefly present the evolution of the movement. This review demonstrates the lack of spatial consideration of the struggles between the movement and state and society, particularly in Istanbul, where neoliberal policies have enabled significant urban redevelopment. In the second section we develop our central argument, and then discuss the importance of spatiality to understand: 1) The role and power of space in the LGBT activism and movement as an enabler of organizing, and 2) How the community has found ways to not only survive and live but also to create spaces of resistance against the exclusionary and displacing processes of neo-liberal struc- turing of the city. To these ends, we focus on Beyoglu, Istanbul where the LGBT community reached a critical mass and formed the movement. We focus on the sub-districts of Cihangir in the 1990s before its gentrification, Tarlabasi in 2000 through its state-led gentrification process and Gezi Park Movement in 2013 to understand the enabling role of these spaces and their transformation into spaces of resistance.

YOUR NEWS! 1 Message from Pre/Primary School October Events in Pre and Primary School We celebrated our Autumn Festival on the 14th. We started the day with an assembly organised by Years Reception, One and Two. They told the whole school about autumn traditions around the world, for example Thanksgiving and Halloween. In the spirit of thanksgiving, we collected dry foods, milk, fruit juice, cheese and toiletries. The Year 6 chil- dren from the Etiler Campus delivered our donations to the Little Sisters of the Poor. The Little Sisters distribute the goods to the needy in Istanbul. On the same day, it was Breast Cancer Awareness Day. We had a Bake Sale to raise money for this important cause. The Pre, Primary and Secondary school parents baked cakes and the Secondary school students sold the cakes to the Pre and Primary students at morning play. Thank you to Years Reception, One and Two for organising a super assembly, Efe (Head of the Secondary School Student Council) for arranging the Bake Sale, and all the parents who supported the school in our two charitable causes on the same day! The PTA were very busy this month. They set up their Board of Control and their committees of Campus, Communica- tion, Curriculum, Social and Charity.
