For the first time since 1984, Dayton advanced to the regional finals of the NCAA tournament. Forward Devin Oliver, guard Vee Sanford and senior Matt Kavanaugh were big reasons why they got this far. A’s News Clips, Thursday, March 3, 2011 A's outfielder Coco Crisp arrested on suspicion of DUI By Joe Stiglich Oakland Tribune A's center fielder Coco Crisp was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol early Wednesday morning, according to an A's news release. Crisp was detained and taken to City of Scottsdale Jail before being released Wednesday morning. He showed up to Phoenix Municipal Stadium on time to join the team for pre-game drills and was in uniform -- but not in the lineup -- for a game against the Cleveland Indians. Crisp declined to comment when asked about the situation, saying he would address the media "in due time." "The A's are aware of the situation and take such matters seriously," the A's statement read. "The team and Coco will have no further comment until further details are available." Crisp, 31, is in his second season with the A's and is slated to play center field and be the leadoff hitter. Ironically, the A's held a security meeting with Major League Baseball officials before taking the field Wednesday. A message that is stressed in the annual meeting is having awareness of the off-field dangers that exist for professional athletes. Crisp signed with the A's as a free agent in December 2009. He hit .279 with eight homers and 38 RBIs last season but played in just 75 games because of a fractured pinkie and strained rib cage muscle. Crisp posts frequently on his Twitter account and often makes reference to his nighttime socializing.

CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Intensity is always Tony Cingrani's specialty Cingrani has one speed, and that's going all out By C. Trent Rosecrans GOODYEAR, ARIZ. — Tony Cingrani gets angry every time he gives up a hit. It doesn’t matter if it’s a spring training exhibition game – like the one he will start Saturday against the Colorado Rockies – or against the St. Louis Cardinals. As the Reds’ second-year starter sees it, it’s his job to not give up any hits and if he gives up a hit, he didn’t do his job. That makes him angry – and like a famous fictional character, you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. “That’s how I get myself fired up. I need to throw harder, so I try to get super angry and throw it harder,” Cingrani said. “I’m not turning green – I’m trying to scare somebody and see what happens.” Cingrani’s intensity even turned into a meme among Reds fans, with the “Cingrani Face” becoming synonymous with an intense, scary mug. Cingrani said he saw that, and even chuckles quietly about it.

MLB.COM Reds expect new leading man Choo to star in Cincy March 26, 2013, 10:00 A.M ET By Mark Sheldon GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Shin-Soo Choo is pleasant, thoughtful and polite, but his mere presence at the top of Reds' lineup is the club's not-so-subtle way of sending a warning to all foes. Cincinnati doesn't just want to repeat as National League Central champion, it expects to win the World Series -- this season. "I think that's pretty much what they're saying," Reds third baseman Todd Frazier agreed. Despite knowing full well that he was eligible to become a free agent after this season, the Reds did not blink when acquiring Choo from the Indians. It meant dealing away center fielder Drew Stubbs and promising shortstop prospect Didi Gregorius in the three- way deal with the D-backs. The Reds got their leadoff hitter, the catalyst and the producer they so desperately craved and didn't have last season. Now they have one year to get it right with all of the pieces to the puzzle finally seemingly in place. It's not that up-and-coming leadoff hitter and top prospect Billy Hamilton is chopped liver, but Choo is a proven entity and he is here now. "He's going to be a huge asset to the team, both on the field and in the clubhouse," right fielder Jay Bruce said. Not only is the 30-year-old Choo capable of getting on first base to set the table for Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto and the rest of the order, he can just as easily make it a 1-0 game after one at-bat.

  • A's News Clips, Tuesday, January 3, 2012 Coco Crisp Decides On
A’s News Clips, Tuesday, January 3, 2012 Coco Crisp decides on next team, but won't say Susan Slusser, Chronicle Staff Writer Departures are the norm for the A's this winter, with pitchers Trevor Cahill, Gio Gonzalez and Craig Breslow all traded and free-agent outfielders Josh Willingham and David DeJesus officially leaving. One of the A's free-agent outfielders, however, remains on the team's radar. Oakland wants to bring back Coco Crisp, according to A's sources. With so many young pitchers on the staff, Crisp's defensive ability is especially valuable. Crisp's agent, Steve Comte, confirmed that he has continued to talk to the A's, and he said Monday that Crisp has decided where he will play this season. "Covelli has made up his mind," said Comte, using Crisp's given name. "Basically, we just have to let that team know." The Cubs and Dodgers are other teams recently linked to the Crisp. The Orioles also are interested, according to cbssports.com. Comte estimated that he has spoken to 13-14 teams about Crisp this winter. Crisp has said that he wants to play for a contender, and though the A's are clearly in rebuilding mode, Comte said, "They're intriguing. It will be interesting how it plays out. They've moved a tremendous amount of personnel, but there is a plan there." The A's have spoken to many free-agent outfielders, including onetime Oakland prospect Ryan Ludwick, according to a major-league source. Other possibilities include ex-Giant Cody Ross and Conor Jackson, whom the A's traded to Boston in late August.
