106th Annual Commencement

*

But I trust in you, 0 LORD; I say, "You are my God." My times are in your hands ...

Psalm 31: 14, 15a (NIV) The Dixon Ministry Center Welcome to the Commencement of the Class of 2002

Today is the celebration of the 106th Commencement of Cedarville Universiry. There were five graduates in that first graduating class: John Bickett, Raymond Gorbold, Homer McMillen, Calvin Morton, and John Orr.

In 1887, five godly men were led to found Cedarville College. They envisioned the need to train preachers and lay people for the work of God at home and abroad. Today their purpose lives on at Cedarville.

Our theme for this academic year has been Transforming Culture with Christlike Compassion. This has been very fitting in light of September 11 and all that has transpired in our nation and the world. Our 632 graduates are truly committed to transforming their culture for our Lord's glory and with His compassion. Our Cedarville family congratulates the class of 2002.

The hand of God has been on this institution. Cedarville has achieved a balance that is distinctive - qualiry academics in harmony with a strong spiritual emphasis. The heartbeat of every Christian school is what happens in chapel. As chapel is the center of our campus, so God is central in all that transpires here. We intend to maintain this focus on the centraliry of chapel for decades to come.

It is our prayer that you might have the joy of knowing Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. Consider what the Bible says: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. " " .. .for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God .... " "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God .... "*

This is a day of beginnings. Our graduates are beginning a new phase of their lives, and you can begin your new life in Christ.

If you do not know our Lord, won't you consider the claims of Christ and make a commitment to Him today? You, too, can make a difference for Jesus Christ!

President Cedarville Universiry

THE POTTER'S HAND by Darlene Zschech

Beautiful Lord, Wonderful Savior, I know for sure all of my days are Held in your hand Grafted into Your perfect plan.

You gently call me into Your presence Guiding me by Your Holy Spirit. Teach me, dear Lord, To live all of my life through Your eyes.

I'm captured by Your holy calling Set me apart. I know You're drawing me to Yourself Lead me, Lord, I pray.

CHORUS Take me, mold me, use me, fill me I give my life to the Potter's hand. Call me, guide me, lead me, walk beside me I give my life to the Potter's hand.

Students graduating with academic honors are wearing a gold cord. A student who earns a grade point average of 3.50 is graduated "with honor;" one who earns a grade point average of 3.75 is graduated "with high honor;" and one who earns a grade point average of 3.90 is graduated "with highest honor." A student must be in residence at least two full years (90 quarter hours) in order to qualify for honors. The Academic Regalia

The colorful academic regalia dates from the Middle Ages when European universities took form. Academic costume has been in use in the since colonial times and is traditionally used for graduation convocations. An intercollegiate commission was formed which established the following standard of uniformity for caps, gowns, and hoods. The standard cap is the mortarboard. The tassel color indicates the subject field.

arts, letters, languages, history white business, commerce drab communications silver gray education light blue engmeenng orange music pink nursmg apricot philosophy royal blue physical education sage green religion scarlet science, mathematics golden yellow social work citron doctor of philosophy, doctor gold of education, doctor of theology, doctor of arts

The length of the hood and the width of the velvet indicate the level of the degree. The doctor's hood is quite long, has two tails, and has a five-inch wide velvet. The master's hood is shorter than the doctor's and has a three-inch wide velvet. The bachelor's hood is shorter yet and has a two-inch wide velvet. The color of the velvet indicates the field of study. Blue velvet indicates the doctoral degrees. The dark brown velvet indicates the master of arts degree. White velvet indicates the bachelor of arts or the master of arts degree. Scarlet velvet indicates the bachelor of divinity degree or the master of divinity degree. Yellow indicates the bachelor of science degree. The colors in the lining of the hood are the university colors.

The gown's traditional color is black. The distinguishing feature of the master's gown is the tippet sleeve. The doctor's gown has two distinguishing features: it is cut much fuller than the bachelor's or the master's gown and has velvet panels on the sleeves, around the neck, and down the front. These panels may be black or the color which symbolizes the subject field in which the degree was earned. Cedarville University Medal of Honor FRITZ J. AND DOLORES H. Russ

The Cedarville University Medal ofHonor is presented by the Board of Trustees to distingu.ished servants and friends ofthe University who are sensitive to the vision and dedicated to advancing the mission ofthe University.

The tenth Cedarville University Medal of Honor is presented to Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ in recognition of their commitment to free enterprise and their leadership in the business, civic, educational, scientific, and philanthropic endeavors that have enriched our region.

This medal is being presented to them jointly, for they are widely known as being inseparable in their business and other enterprises during their nearly 60 years of marriage. Both worked at the Naval Research Laboratories during World War II, he in research and she in financial management. After returning to their native Ohio and a distinguished career in armament research and technical intelligence at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, they started their own company in the basement of their home. Their company, Systems Research Laboratories, grew to be one of the largest privately-held research companies in the world. Their company was responsible for breakthrough achievements in a wide variety of engineering and scientific fields.

The College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University- their alma mater-is named for them, and the recently-established Russ Prize recognizes engineering achievement on the same level as the Nobel Prize recognizes other pursuits. The Russes have been active locally in civic affairs, the YMCA, the Dayton Art Institute, the Engineers Club of Dayton, and many other worthy causes. Dolores' involvements include serving with the Friends of the First Ladies organization at the Smithsonian Institution.

The Russes are ardent advocates and generous supporters of the Cedarville University engineering program. Dr. Russ began serving on Cedarville's Engineering Advisory Council before the engineering program was launched, and he continues to share his insight as a member of this important group.

Many hundreds of scientists and engineers grew because of the Russes encouragement; our county is greatly enriched by their business, intellectual, and philanthropic investments; and hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens live safer and healthier lives because of their developments.

Cedarville University benefits from its location in Greene County and the greater Dayton region, and people like Fritz and Dolores Russ have made this region what it is today. Upon unanimous approval of the Cedarville University Board of Trustees, Cedarville University bestows the Medal of Honor on Fritz]. and Dolores H. Russ.
