Terve, my name is Judith and I was exchange student in Oulu in Autumn 2017. At the Vulcanalia fair I stumbled over an information desk where a girl with a brass instrument promoted the student brass band Teekkaritorvet. Playing trombone myself, the next evening I went to my first rehearsal. I was really nervous. Will I be inte- grated not knowing the language, not being able to follow the instructions? Meteli ry is a hobby organization that has been around since 2004. Our members are mostly students that have archeology as major or minor subject. Meteli’s activ- ities include an annual excursion to Kierikki Stone Age Centre in the fall, museum visits, and common events with the subject’s staff (for example seminars). The ac- tivity is monthly. You can apply to be a member of Meteli by filling a membership application and paying a membership fee of 5€ either to the association’s account or to the member of the board. OAOS was founded in 2011 and became a registered association in 2013. The purpose of the society is to promote beer culture and disseminate information on brewing. The society organises various events and upholds connections to other beer societies and the Student Union of the University of Oulu. The events organised by the society in- clude monthly meetings, brewery visits and seasonal beer tastings. 15 Oulun Teekkarikuoro TeeKu Choir for technology students in Oulu

TeeKu is the greatest choir of students of technology from Oulu in the world. TeeKu was founded during the Wappu celebrations of 1993. There are approximately 30- 40 active singers, about half of which are engineering students and alumni and half study in other faculties. The choir is conducted by Sofia Riippi. TeeKu’s repertoire mostly consists of easy listening, drinking songs and of course traditional songs of engineering students. One larger thematic concert is held each year, plus a vary- ing amount of smaller concerts such as the annual Wappu concert and graduation ceremonies. TeeKu is practicing at the University of Oulu, Linnanmaa, Saalastinsali on Wednesdays from 18 to 20. Welcome to sing with us!

Kaeno ((re-) established in 1999) is a club for students originating from Kainuu, but basically anyone with an itch for the province can join for free, via email or asking for a paper form. Chamber orchestra is a string orchestra comprised of around 20 members. Its con- ductor is Jari Välimäki. The repertoire ranges from classical to popular music. The orchestra gives at least two concerts each year and often participates in University events. The orchestra rehearses weekly on Tuesday at Linnanmaa. Annual fee is 50 e for students and 100 e for others. The orchestra provides you the opportunity to maintain and build playing skills in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. We have a moose hunting group which hunts on public land in Taivalkoski municipality and we arrange occasional hunts for our members. The Student Theatre of Oulu (OYT) admits new members every fall through a group orientation called Tuoretiski, in which you get to try various activities in a theatre production depending on your area of interest. The casting sessions of all our plays are also open for everyone. You can apply for a membership for an an- nual fee of 10 € after you have participated in one production. OYT offers weekly improv sessions that are open for everyone; Mysterybox-events, for which you can suggest your own content; and chargeable theatre courses. Cassiopeia is art. From pop to major classical works, not forgetting the roof-raising repertoire to accompany any toast. Every Wednesday from 6.30 to 9 pm our tunes are kept pure and our repertoire fresh and frequently changing by our artistic di- rector Kristian Heberg. The choir holds over 50 active voices. We hold auditions every autumn, but not to worry, it’s a relaxed process with no need to prepare beforehand. In addition to weekly rehearsals, we hold a few rehearsal weekends each year. 20 Pahkispeksi ry Student Theatre Production

PahkiSpeksi is a yearly production of an improvisational musical theatre. Pahki- Speksi is an organization of about a 100 people including actors, dancers, stage hands and a lot of people behind the scenes. The play itself is in Finnish, but we have had some people who don’t speak Finnish in scenery, costumes, web design and other teams. Most teams work during the evenings and there are a couple of weekends, where the whole speksi gathers and works together. The participation fee is about 10 euros per year and it covers the food costs during the weekends and you get a ticket for the final show.

Ostrobothnian Academic National Defense Association is a member club of the Finnish Reserve Officers’ Federation (RUL), dedicated to local student reservists. Main functions include sports shooting and engaging in other voluntary reserv- ist activities. Organized shooting range events on a weekly basis provide a low threshold for participation in club activities, especially with the added possibility to make use of the club’s firearms and equipment. Rattoradio is a student radio made by students of Oulu. We can be heard every Wappu on FM waves or through the internet. Our music and topics resemble the creators and listeners: we have traditional 90s sounds, funk, melancholic heavy metal and much more! Radio guarantees a different wappu experience and an- ybody can join us. Our membership fee is 5 € and our active season goes from January to first of May. We train our members in the basics of radio operation and there’s a lot to do for every speciality from content creation to technical fiddling and marketing.

SOOPA is a local group of scouts who study in Oulu. SOOPA has three ma- jor hikes during the year. The first one takes place around the New Year’s eve, the second during the Eastern and the third in the autumn, also many smaller hikes during weekends are organized. Nowadays we have a multidisciplinary line-up of woodwind, brass, and percussion players from freshmen to PhDs.
