ABSTRACT In the Achaemenid Empire( 331-559 B.C.)there were different tribes with various cultures. Each of these tribes spoke their own language(s). They mainly included Iranian and non- Iranian languages. The process of changes in the Persian language can be divided into three periods, namely , Ancient , Middle, and Modern Persian. The Iranian languages in ancient times ( from the beginning of of the Achaemenids to the end of the Empire) included :Median,Sekaee,Avestan,and Ancient Persian. At the time of the Achaemenids ,Ancient Persian was the language spoken in Pars state and the South Western part of Iran.Documents show that this language was not used in political and state affairs. The only remnants of this language are the slates and inscriptions of the Achaemenid Kings. These works are carved on stone, mud,silver and golden slates. They can also be found on coins,seals,rings,weights and plates.The written form of this language is exclusively found in inscriptions. In fact ,this language was used to record the great and glorious achivements of the Achaemenid kings. -

The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC. -
Considering the Failures of the Parthians Against the Invasions of the Central Asian Tribal Confederations in the 120S Bce
NIKOLAUS OVERTOOM WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY CONSIDERING THE FAILURES OF THE PARTHIANS AGAINST THE INVASIONS OF THE CENTRAL ASIAN TRIBAL CONFEDERATIONS IN THE 120S BCE SUMMARY When the Parthians rebelled against the Seleucid Empire in the middle third century BCE, seizing a large section of northeastern Iran, they inherited the challenging responsibility of monitoring the extensive frontier between the Iranian plateau and the Central Asian steppe. Although initially able to maintain working relations with various tribal confederations in the region, with the final collapse of the Bactrian kingdom in the 130s BCE, the ever-wide- ning eastern frontier of the Parthian state became increasingly unstable, and in the 120s BCE nomadic warriors devastated the vulnerable eastern territories of the Parthian state, temporarily eliminating Parthian control of the Iranian plateau. This article is a conside- ration of the failures of the Parthians to meet and overcome the obstacles they faced along their eastern frontier in the 120s BCE and a reevaluation of the causes and consequences of the events. It concludes that western distractions and the mismanagement of eastern affairs by the Arsacids turned a minor dispute into one of the most costly and difficult struggles in Parthian history. They can be considered as a successor to the Elamite power throughout the history of Persia. Located in the southwest of Iran, Tang-e Sulak is one of the important regions where numerous Elymaisian artifacts have been discovered. In this research 12 copper coins recovered at Tang-e Sulak are examined. According to previous studies on these coins, there are evident signs of economic and political chaos from the Elymais Era. Moreover, the proportion of elements in these coins obtained from spectroscopy can argue there are at least two different mines involved. Meanwhile, this study discussed the technology by which copper was isolated from its ore over the Elymais Era. In that light, a good insight can be gained about the great importance of Particle Induced X-Ray Spectroscopy (PIXE) in archaeological studies and relevant analyses in the Elymais Era. The earliest written document on cancer appeared on Egyptian papyrus. For centuries, the theory of “four humors” was the primary hypothesis that explained the cause for cancer. Finally, in the 19th century a new era began with the detection of the cellular origin of cancer; in due course, the nature of this lethal disease was better recognized and led to further achievements in cancer treatment. During the 20th century researchers investigated several risk factors for cancer such as tobacco smoking and environmental chemicals, in addition to the carcinogenic role of certain viruses, occupational association of cancer, LWVUHODWLRQVKLSZLWKFHUWDLQKRUPRQHVDQGGLHWDU\KDELWVDQGWKHJHQHWLFEDVLVRIFDQFHU7KHVHLQYHVWLJDWLRQVUHVXOWHGLQPRUHHI¿FLHQW cancer management. For two centuries the Seleukid Empire (312-64 BCE) was the largest of the three Macedonian empires that had emerged after the death of Alexander the Great. It was created by, and later named after, Seleukos I Nikator (‘the Victorious’) from his satrapy of Babylonia, incorporating and transforming the infrastructure of the preceding Achaemenid Empire. About Shiraz The City: Shiraz is a city of sophistication that has been celebrated as the heartland of Persian culture for more than 2000 years. Known as the Dar-ol-Elm (House of Learning),the City of Roses,City of Love and City of Gardens,Shiraz has become synonymous with education, nightingales, and poetry. It was one of the most important cities in the medieval Islamic world and was the Iranian capital during the Zand dynasty (AD 1747–79), when many of its most beautiful buildings were built or restored. This city is situated in the south east of Iran and is the capital city of Fars Province, with a population of about 1 500 000. Shiraz is mild in spring and hot in the summer. The autumns in Shiraz are not too cold; however, the winters tend to be quite cold. Sites to Visit: The Shrine of Shahe-e-Cheragh Sayyed Mir Ahmad,one of Imam Reza’s 17 brothers, was hunted down and killed by the caliphate on this site in AD 835. His remains are housed at the glittering Aramgah-e Shah-e Cheragh. A mausoleum was first erected over the grave during the 12th century but most of what you see dates from the late-Qajar period and the Islamic Republic; expansion is ongoing. Persepolis Persepolis (Old Persian: Pārsa,Takht-e Jamshid or Chehel Minar) was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire (ca. 550-330BCE). Persepolis is situated 70 km northeast of the modern city of Shiraz in the Fars Province of modern Iran. In contemporary Persian,the site is known as Takht-e Jamshid (Throne of Jamshid). -

CHAPTER FIFTY The Achaemenid Heartland: An Archaeological - Historical Perspective Wouter F.M. Henkelman 1 Geographical, Climatic, and Chronological Setting Though the Achaemenid heartland in a strict sense corresponds roughly to the modern Iranian province of F ā rs (ancient P ā rsa, PersV), its immediate cultural and historical context comprised parts of the provinces of Esfah ā n, Y ā zd, Kerm ā n and B ū š ehr, as well as Kh ū zest ā n, where a Neo - Elamite kingdom existed until c.540 or 520 BC . An Iranian presence was noticeable on Elam ’ s northern and eastern borders from the 7th century BC onward and Elamite culture provided a critical impulse for the early Persians (Henkelman 2008a ). When Darius I (522 – 486 BC ) transformed Susa into a principal Achaemenid residence (c.520 BC ), he confi rmed Elam ’ s special status and de facto made it part of the empire ’ s core. In fact, the bipolarity of lowland Kh ū zest ā n and highland F ā rs had characterized successive Elamite states from the 3rd millennium onward (Amiet 1979 ; Potts 1999 ; Miroschedji 2003 ; for other parts of Achaemenid Iran, see Boucharlat 2005 ). In physical terms, the area comprises the southern Zagros range of northwest– southeast - oriented valleys, ending in larger intermontane plains (the Kū r River basin, including the Marv Da š t with Persepolis); the B ū š ehr province coastal plains (and further east?); and the Kh ū zest ā n alluvial plain. As the ancient coast- line extended further northwestward than it does today, only higher Kh ū zest ā n is relevant here, roughly the area north of Ahw ā z (Gasche 2004, 2005, 2007 ; Heyvaert and Baeteman 2007 ). -

Iran and the Caucasus 11 (2007) 169-194 Temple Architecture in the Iranian World before the Macedonian Conquest 1 Michael Shenkar Hebrew University of Jerusalem Abstract The article offers a survey of temple architecture in the Iranian world before the Macedonian conquest. Despite the observations that ancient Iranians worshipped in the open air, struc- tures of cultic significance have been discovered in some areas of Eastern Iran. While the attribution of the earliest, second millennium temples to the Iranian tribes is still disputable, Iranians definitely had temples before the Achaemenids. The earliest temples found in the Iranian settlements are the ones from Tepe Nush-i Jan (for Western Iran) and Dahān-i Ghulāmān (for the Eastern). However, it seems that the majority of ancient Iranians, including the first Achaemenids, worshiped under the open sky. Given the nomadic background of the ancient Iranians they probably became ac- quainted with temple architecture once they came into close contact with the highly developed civilisations, which preceded them in some areas of what was later to become the Iranian World. In general it is impossible to speak of one “Iranian cul- ture” or a unified “Iranian cult” in the second and first millennia BCE; instead, tem- ple architecture demonstrates a variety of different regional traditions. More tem- ples have been discovered in Eastern Iran than in Western. The architectural evi- dence from Eastern Iran in this period also suggests a complex picture of heteroge- neous local cults, at least some of which made use of closed temples. Another kind of cultic structure was the open air terraces. -

Analyzing sustainability principles in Curitiba, the paper aims to study their applicability in the case of Shiraz in Iran. Considering the complexity of physical, social, cultural and environmental systems in urban planning, the research underlines the vitality of contextual studies, integration and implementation strategies in sustainability achievement in urban scale. It shows how and to what extent sustainability principles in a city can be adapted to other contexts. This comparative study benefits from interpretive methods of data collection and analysis based on primary and secondary resources. A theoretical framework of planning based on equity, economy and ecology is being utilized in data collection and analysis. The investigation indicates that Curitiba’s sustainability agenda is based on a set of integration and implementation strategies which combine decision making, education, transportation, public welfare, heritage conservation and waste management. It is argued that although every urban environment has its specific opportunities and constraints, still there are many things to learn from others. This road constituted rough and smooth paths and was the passage of different nations with different goals. In this context, various cultures have also been published and exchanged in line with the trade of various goods. The presence of different caravansaries around the road indicates its importance and prosperity in the Safavid course, but with all of this, there is little information available on the importance of this route in the existing travel books and historical books. Despite all the inadequacies, in this research, with the descriptive-analytical approach based on the research data, it is concluded that the Qozloq Route has been of great importance in the Safavid course, strategically, and in term of the publication of the culture and prosperity of the economy, and the dynamism of development and awareness.
