By Anne Cushman Artwork by Robert Mahon 46 TRICYCLE FA L L 20 1 0 TRICYCLE FA L L 20 1 0 47 couple of years ago, about a month before my first novel was due to be published—and several months into an intensive meditation training program for yoga teachers that I was co-directing at Spirit Rock Meditation Center—I had two startlingly vivid dreams. AThe first: I am gliding and twirling around a roller disco, dressed only in a black velvet bikini and white fur-trimmed rollerblades. When I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror, my first reaction is delight: “I look totally hot!” Then comes horror: “But what if I run into a Spirit Rock teacher while I’m dressed like this?” The second: My novel in hand, I have gone into therapy with a good friend of mine, a longtime teacher of yoga and Buddhist meditation. The session is held on the edge of a precipitous cliff. As the therapist tries to intervene, my friend and I keep snatching a microphone away from each other, trying to dominate the conversation. But then I tell my friend, with great intensity, “The only purpose of writing is to wake up.” So we hug each other happily and leave to very dramas that spiritual practice is determined to transcend. dreaming—and the popsicle sticks I had hidden in my sock too early in the morning. The Best-Laid Plans A vomiting child in an airport hotel— it wasn’t the vacation she had in mind. ANNE CUSHMAN on the teachings of a trip gone awry. AST WEEKEND I had a spiritual breakthrough while stay- ing with my feverish ten-year-old son at a hotel at the Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport. Well, okay, so maybe it wasn’t exactly a breakthrough. Maybe it was more of a little crack in the prison walls Lthrough which a ray of moonlight could shine. By prison, of course, I don’t mean our hotel room. We were actually in a very comfortable seventh-floor room with a panoramic view of the runway. That is, un- til Skye threw up all over the rug, at which point we were switched to an identical fourth-floor room with a panoramic view of the parking garage. No, by prison I mean those iron bars of thoughts and beliefs that… well, maybe I should just start this story at the beginning. LATE LAST FALL, I began planning a two-week trip to Guatemala with Skye to study Spanish and live with a Mayan family in a remote mountain village on the shores of Lake Atitlán. I set up our trip through a nonprofit organization run by a youngA merican couple who had made Guatemala their home. The more they told me about what we would experience there, the better it sounded. Our homestay family— Pedro, Gladis, and their three boys—didn’t speak English. We’d learn to make tortillas in Gladis’ wood-fired stove. -

Marma points are important vital places in the body, that are the ‘seats of life’ (Prana - the vital life force). As any injury to these parts may lead to severe pain, disability, loss of function, loss of sensation, or death, therefore, they hold an important place in the science of surgery, wherein they are considered ‘Shalya Vishayardha’ (half of the entire science of surgery). The ancient scriptures have strictly directed against causing any injury to these vital spots. However, recent researches have attempted the stimulation of Marma points for theraputic benefits, with encouraging outcomes. In view of these mutually conflicting, importance applications of Marma Science, the present study was undertaken for its in-depth study. Part-1 of this study presented the information about different aspects of Marma Science in various ancient / classical Indian scriptures. Part-2 gave a detailed description of the number of marmas, their location, structures involved, classification, effect of trauma, etc., as per classical texts, as well as correlation with modern science. -

300-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Program Catalog March 2021 – August 2022 MISSION Green Lotus Group, LLC d/b/a Green Lotus Yoga & Healing Center, created its 300-hour program to strengthen and support the foundation yoga teachers earned in their Yoga Alliance RYT 200- hour certification. In this advance-level program Green Lotus continues its commitment to the success of all enrollees in learning the practical application of how yoga contributes to the personal physical and emotional growth and wellness of people from diverse backgrounds, ages, and perspectives. It extends its history of deep support so that each student reaches her/his level of self-reflection, self-inquiry and self-discovery to extend personal transformation and the ability to communicate it. OVERVIEW Green Lotus has been conducting 200-hour teacher training classes since 2008 and in 2013 offered its advanced 300-hour training to its first cohort of students. The 18-month 300-hour curriculum supports teachers seeking deeper enquiry into how yoga – in its many facets of ethics, philosophy, physical movement (asana) and breath work, meditation, Ayurveda, and more – supports overall wellness and well-being. We thank you for your tremendous support in bringing this vision to bear and look forward to welcoming you to our new sangha space together! • Karuna: Many of you have also been following our progress over the years with our diversity efforts — from the first People of Color (POC) Retreat in 1999, to expanding POC scholarship support for long retreats, to our commitment for our next Teacher Training to train a majority of Teachers of Color. We had a major shift last fall when core faculty for the program resigned, pointing towards foundational issues around race, equity and governance at both Spirit Rock and Executive Director, Michelle Latvala Insight Meditation Society that needed to be addressed for this groundbreaking Teacher Training to succeed. Those of us in staff, teaching and Board leadership are accountable Spirit Rock is in the midst of an incredibly transformative year. for our own actions and inactions, and the actions and inactions of those around us, that led to this resignation. Externally we are happily increasing our dharma offerings as we open our new Community Meditation Center this summer. We are engaged in a multi-levelled reckoning to better understand and learn from this opportunity in order to Internally we are rigorously working on changing the transform the conditions at Spirit Rock to better address conditions, structures and processes that have limited inclusivity, race and equity. -

This science has now become increasingly popular in many countries. There are several health conditions that can be cured or at least alleviated to a great extent, through the practice of this science. Yoga includes Asana, Pranayam and exercises that can help body, immunity, increase strength, weight loss, remove stress and relief from pains, infections and disorders. Some of the various yoga poses and techniques can be used to cure numerous conditions ranging from nasal polyps to cancer. Since a sinus infection is one of the most common respiratory ailments that people suffer from, it is only common for them to use natural practices to cure this condition. Yoga practice, which is known as Jala neti or Sutra neti, i.e., cleansing of nasal cavity, throat can help reduce the pain and discomfort due to sinusitis, within a shorter period of time. These procedures are known as Neti kriya. Neti kriya is an integral part of shatkarmas / the six cleansing techniques that form the most important aspect of hatha yoga. -

BHOLE INTRODUCTION Though Yoga is primarily not a method of therapy, one does find in the later Yogic literature, especially in the Hatha Yoga texts, many pointed passages indicating the curative and prophy lactic value of many Yogic practices. Traditionally too, these practices were looked upon as prophylactic and therapeutical measures and were used as such. For a long time, utmost secrecy was maintained by ' Yogis ' about these methods, with almost a superstitious fear that they would lose their efficacy if made known to the uninitiated. The Yogic texts too frequently held out such threats.1 Thus, this knowledge happened to remain a sacred and secret repository of a select few ! During the last half a century or so, however, due to the efforts of especially a few modern educated enthusiastic students of Yoga, the system has come to obtain a greater and greater publicity, and many claims happen to be made for its practices. The therapeutical aspect of Yoga too has become very popular. There are, in this country and abroad, many institutions and individuals who seem to have taken it up almost as a profession. They claim ' marvellous success ' in their results. Thus, what may be called 'Yogic Therapy' has practically come into being and is gaining an ever increasing popularity as days pass by. 1. The ancient Rishis recognized the importance of a healthy body for all activities, whether worldly or spiritual. Hatha Yoga, as explained in the text ‘Hatha Yoga Pradapika’, is aimed at making the body and mind fit for higher practices of Raja Yoga. The Shatkarmas are said to make the body clean and strong, free of diseases, remove toxins and improve concentration. They can also improve the flow of prana into the organs and the pranic meridians or nadis. -
