1St Sydenham Youths 1878-1882 1 ANCESTRY OF SYDENHAM CRICKET CLUB AT PAPERS PAST BY FLAGON PARK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A number of cricket clubs catered for younger cricketers of Sydenham over the years. SYDENHAM SCHOOL SYDENHAM YOUTHS CRICKET CLUB (1) SYDENHAM YOUTHS CRICKET CLUB (2) SYDENHAM JUVENILE DRUIDS CRICKET CLUB SYDENHAM JUVENILE ODDFELLOWS CRICKET CLUB SYDENHAM YOUNG MEN'S ASSOCIATION SYDENHAM MISSION CRICKET CLUB Sydenham School at first was known as the Colombo Road School. It formed offsite in 1872 until school buildings under construction on Colombo Road were completed. It played its first cricket match in 1873. Many good cricketers made their start in Sydenham's teams, the name Billy PATRICK immediately springing to mind, the long- time Sydenham & Addington United and Sydenham member who captained Canterbury and New Zealand. A Druids lodge was formed in Sydenham in 1879. A Sydenham Juvenile Druids cricket team played 1888 for a few seasons. Sydenham Juvenile Oddfellows lasted at least a season. In 1897 the Baptist church formed a Sydenham Young Men's Association which had a cricket team. A Sydenham Mission Cricket Club was playing games during the 1897-98 season. There were two Sydenham Youths cricket clubs. The first, a strong team, formed by the 1878-79 season, seems to have petered out after the 1881-82 season with a number of its players joining the second Sydenham Cricket Club formed in 1882. A second Sydenham Youths Cricket Club formed in 1884 lasting at least the 1884-85 season. It is possible that some members could have gone to the second Sydenham club after that, but I am not sure. Some members of the first Sydenham Youths team became well known in later years as 2 players of ability in various cricket clubs. Easily their best player was Johnny FOWKE (John Nicholls FOWKE) who in later years ended up as a stalwart of the Sydenham & Addington United Cricket Club and then the Sydenham District Cricket Club, having played for senior clubs Midland and then Lancaster Park previously. He played for Canterbury and Auckland (for whom he had a stint as captain), and for a New Zealand side against New South Wales. W. ALLARDYCE will be Billy ALLARDYCE (William Murison ALLARDYCE). He was especially well known for his lengthy stint with the Sydenham Football Club (rugby), of which he was a founder member and long time administrator including all positions except Secretary. Billy's son Ivan ALLARDYCE played cricket for Sydenham and represented both Canterbury and Wellington Notice in the items below that the Sydenham Youths Cricket Club, at a meeting held on 17 April 1879, formed a Sydenham Youths Football Club three seasons before the formation of the Sydenham Football Club in 1882. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE FIRST SYDENHAM YOUTHS CRICKET CLUB 1878-1882 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The item below has Richmond playing the Sydenham Cricket Club but, judging by the playing personnel, the Sydenham team is probably the Sydenham Youths Cricket Club side. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi- bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=CHP18781123.2.30&srpos=70&e=-------100- LT%2cCHP%2cTS-1-byDA-on--0fowke-- Press, Volume XXX, Issue 4158, 23 November 1878, Page 4 Cricket Fixtures. In the United Kingdom, West Indians, West Africans, and South Asians formed a Black Panther Movement in 1968 and in Israel, a group of Mizrahi (Arab) Jews founded a Black Panther Party in in Jerusalem in 1971.

As an undergraduate at the University of Texas at Austin from 1985 to 1989, I am grateful, appreciative, and humbled to have returned as a graduate student some twenty years later to the same institution, but a different one. As I have carried out this project, I have felt impelled to sort out those aspects of the past that are yet present, and those which are not. Such, it seems to me now, is the proper role of the educational, and educator, historian. That this task was a co-construction of knowledge for me has indebted me to the following persons. I am particularly indebted to Dr. Sherry Field for shepherding me through this process as an able and willing guide, but also as a teacher in the truest sense of the word.
