From the Land of Sunshine The Arts and Crafts Movement in Pasadena and Environs Marking the 50th anniversary of the gift of the Gamble House to the University of Southern California, IAC's 18th annual Arts and Crafts Conference returns to Pasadena where we also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, fittingly in a city deeply committed to preserving its wealth of historic resources. Photo: courtesy, The Greene & Greene Virtual Archives, For the Arts and Crafts movement in University of Southern California. general, and its expressions in Pasadena in particular, the most significant and representative form of architecture is the house, often defined by a set of ideals and principles rather than a single architectural style. For many of the Movement's leading figures, architectural structures were ideally Gesamtkunstwerken, comprehensive artworks embracing all or many art forms. These structures might incorporate the vernacular, with architects using local materials and traditional styles to create structures that would fit with their surroundings, while being distinctive and of their time. Many hoped to revive traditional building and craft skills. Regional distinctions in expression were significant, as were international influences and the particular gifts and abilities of individual architects and firms. To understand them, we look to the necklace of Arts and Crafts homes and communities arrayed throughout the United States with the Gamble House and Pasadena being among the most important. The conference is hosted by The Gamble House, The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), The Pasadena Museum of History, with participation by Judson Studios, The Lummis Home & Gardens, The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, The Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church, The Aline R. The Stairway in Gamble House 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Judson Studios Specializing in the design, creation, and installation of hand-crafted, stained, leaded, and other unique forms of architectural glass, Judson Studios was , Pasadena, founded in the mid-1890s by William Lees Judson and his three sons. It remains a family-run business in the Garvanza section of northeast Los Angeles. The firm moved to its current location, a two-story building designed by Robert Train and Robert Edmund Williams, in 1920. The Judson Studios building was named a Historic-Cultural Monument by the City of Los Angeles in 1969 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. "Batchelder: Tilemaker" is curated by Robert Winter, who lives in the Batchelder house and authored Batchelder: Tilemaker, the definitive Batchelder history. Batchelder established his first tile factory in the backyard of his home on the banks of Pasadena’s Arroyo Seco. His hand-crafted art tiles epitomized the ideals of the American Arts and Crafts movement. The exhibition "Cast & Fired: Pasadena’s Mid-Century Ceramics Industry," explores the growth and decline of the mass-market ceramics industry from the 1930s through the 1960s. Cole House designed by Greene & Greene in 1906.

    The Artist Creating a 150-Foot-Long Glass Rainbow nytimes.com/2019/02/07/t-magazine/sarah-cain-san-francisco-airport.html By Alice Newell-Hanson February 6, 2019 The first paintings that Sarah Cain remembers admiring as a teenager were works by Joan Mitchell, Philip Guston and Robert Motherwell which, thanks to a public arts fund, lined the walls of an otherwise dismal underground mall in Albany, N.Y., not far from where she grew up, in Kinderhook. “My parents didn’t really take me to museums, so that is where I saw the first real art, mixed in with shops and a McDonald’s,” says Cain, who is now 40 and an established artist herself. In July, she will unveil a major public work of her own, a 150-foot-long series of 37 vividly colorful stained-glass windows, funded by the San Francisco Arts Commission, which she hopes will inspire passers-by in an equally unlikely setting: the new AirTrain terminal at the city’s international airport. Cain lived in San Francisco for 10 years in the late 1990s and early 2000s; she studied art at the San Francisco Art Institute, and later Berkeley, then stayed in the area, making ephemeral large-scale paintings inside the abandoned buildings where her artist friends squatted. The San Francisco airport installation, her first permanent public work, channels the outsider ethos of 1/3 those early pieces as well as the rainbow-colored prismatic compositions of her more recent paintings and drawings, but stained glass is a relatively new medium for her.

    Mount Shasta Annotated Bibliography Chapter 23 Literature: Poetry Mount Shasta as a symbol of high ideals, as a symbol of God's domain, as a symbol of purity, and as an inspiring presence, are just some of the varied themes which run through the 19th and 20th Century poems about this majestic mountain. In 1854 John Rollin Ridge, a Cherokee Indian who later became editor of the Sacramento Bee newspaper, wrote one of the earliest Mt. Shasta poems; entitled Mount Shasta it became one of the most famous California poems. Ridge's message was one for the entire state, and the poem contains lines such as "And well this Golden State shall thrive, if like Its own Mount Shasta, Sovereign Law shall lift Itself in purer atmosphere—so high..." The well-known abolitionist poet John Greenleaf Whittier, in 1863, used Shasta as a symbol of God's works: "Amidst the glorious works of thine, The solemn minarets of Pine, And awful Shasta's icy shrine,-Where swell thy hymns from wave and gale..." Many Mt. Shasta poems are less abstract and more personal in sentiment. Joaquin Miller, who lived from 1854-57 near Mt. Shasta, and who visited many times thereafter, wrote several poems about his old home mountain. In his Shadows of Shasta poem, reprinted in this section, one sees his recurring theme of the 'Shadows,' or dark secrets, he saw inflicted on the lives of the Indians at the hands of the whites: "In the place where the grizzly reposes, Under peaks where a right is a wrong...." Enclosed by new gates at Wilshire Boulevard Restored that were inspired by the curved forms of the dome, the communal garden is a place for the congregation to gather as a community in reflection or celebration.
