The Future of Oakmont Smarter Living Today and Tomorrow nMarilyn Pahr Zoom Presentation: July 22, 4 pm Starlink and 5G Where are we going with cellular and internet access? The FCC authorized SpaceX, Elon Musk’s rocket firm, to begin rolling out as many as 1 million ground antennas for its Starlink internet project. Starlink is an ambitious network of about 12,000 satellites that SpaceX wants to use to provide high-speed internet to anywhere in the world where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable. Their recent successful launch of Falcon 9 put 58 branded satellites into orbit with an intent to provide internet service in the northern US and Canada by year’s end, with near-global coverage in 2021. How will Starlink compete with the telcos that presently provide our internet service? The Oakmont Futures Club is not holding group meetings while the OVA facilities are closed. In the interim, we are holding short informational video conferences on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. The topic for each will be posted on the E-Blast. Instructions for connecting to the Zoom presentation are emailed to everyone on our email list. These will also be recorded and a videotape will be available on our website: www.oakmontfuture.com. Hello Oakmont, We are a fairly new club at Oakmont established last June, 2019 by Colonel David Vogl, USAF (Retired). David passed away in December 2019 succumbing to cancer most likely from Agent Orange in Vietnam. He asked me if I would take over as Chairman of this organization and I said yes. My name is John Adams and I am a retired Senior Master Sergeant from the USAF. Our official name is Oakmont Veterans Association. We were founded to support, inform veterans of entitlements and benefits, and to have a monthly Beer Call. A Beer Call is something we vets always enjoyed at the end of the work week where we would swap stories and catch up with one another. All veterans of Services of all countries are eligible to belong. Our meetings are the last Friday of the month at 4:30 p.m. and were held at the Quail Inn until it closed and we moved to the OVA building suite B, until we were quarantined and have not met formally since. We had several speakers we cancelled and will reschedule them when we are able to have meetings again. Veterans’ surviving spouses will be invited to our guest speakers’ presentations. At the moment we have 30 active veterans. All veterans interested may e-mail me at johnad119@ sbcglobal.net so we can get you on our mailing list. We were happy to recently help celebrate Arend (Pete) Folkens 100th birthday along with the Soroptimist Club, Domino Club, Playwriters Club, Santa Rosa Fire and Police Department with a parade and singing Happy Birthday. Arend served in the US Coast Guard in World War II and in the Navy Reserve during the Korean War. ❀❀❀❀❀❀❀❀ 16 The Oakmont News / July 15, 2020
