From Sal Manfredo 2019 CONTEST WINNERS Vol. 10, No. 9, September 2019 It's a Wrap! from Sal Manfredo I want to thank all of you who attended this year’s TAOM and discovered the unbelievable magic. A convention is only as good as the team that supports the president. My chairmen and their spouses stepped up and each took on more than one event to make the convention run smoothly. Of course, for me, the four days were nothing but a blur. From the comments, I heard everyone in attendance had a good time. It was an honor and a pleasure serving as your president this past year. Now it’s time to turn the organization over to President Joey Byers. He has told me that next year will be a different kind of convention. I’m looking forward to it. Salvatore Manfredo TAOM Past President 2019 2019 CONTEST WINNERS Trophy and Awards Chairman Bob Emery (left) and TAOM Secretary Treasurer Mary Cay Gold (right) were all smiles as they presented awards to the winners of the 2019 TAOM contests. The winners are, from left to right, Anthony Wilkins (Junior Close-up), Jeremy Mikaelson (Senior Stage), Jay Zugai (Comedy, and David Elliott (Senior Close-up). All their acts were top notch and highly entertaining. Well deserved, gentlemen! TAOM ORDER OF WILLARD HONORS TAOM Secretary May Cay Gold was all smiles when she presented the 35-year medallion to TOAM member Jay Zugai. Those receiving 25-year pins, certificates, and medallions in 2019 were Roger Johnson, TAOM President Sal Manfredo, Dahnene Moravits, and Don Moravits. Not present to receive the honors, E. A. Basse and Mel Babcock. One interesting tidbit is that these six Order of Willard recipients attended their very first TAOM convention in San Antonio! The presentation ceremony followed a sumptuous breakfast buffet that was enjoyed by about 50 Order of Willard honorees. Afterward, Ken Cummins gave a delightful presentation about San Antonio icon Lou Berkie and the evolution of his wooden nickel business. Photos by Toni Pare 2020: Perfect Vision for TAOM Greetings members, friends, and family of the Texas Association of Magicians. For those of you who do not know me, my name is Joey Byers, I live in Coppell, Texas, and I am the newly elected President of the Texas Association of Magicians. Magic Across Texas editor Judy Hollingsworth asked me to take this opportunity and column over the next 12 months, to share with you the vision for the 2020 TAOM convention. My first words are to congratulate and thank Immediate Past President Sal Manfredo and his team for putting on a marvelous 2019 TAOM convention in San Antonio a few weeks ago. The hotel was fabulous, the talent and entertainment were diverse and top-notch. The lectures were entertaining and informative. The Dealer Room was great! Every time I asked someone what their favorite part or moment of the convention was, I got a different answer, which tells me that the San Antonio convention had something for everybody! Well done Mr. Manfredo, and hats off to you and your staff. Oscar Munoz told me in 2016 when he was President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, "Joey, I thought the president wielded all this power. Ha ha! There ain't no power!". I thought he was being modest, but I have observed early on how this works. Certainly in the TAOM, accomplishments are made by committees and benevolent people with good hearts who volunteer their time, effort, and even money. People create newsletters, keep records and accounting, and help us with legal work who receive little or no compensation - because they love magic and they love the organization. (Shout outs to Judy Hollingsworth, Mary Cay Gold, and Hull Youngblood). I observed that it's all about service! The topic of service leads us to my next point: Why am I the President of the Texas Association of Magicians? I am not on the list of the top magicians in Texas. I am not the most eloquent orator in the organization. I do not boast a lifetime of involvement with, or achievement in, magic. Nor do I have extensive contacts in the business, or know and hang out with all the big name magicians or cool people. So why me? Why is Joey Byers the Prez? Here is the answer: My short time in magic has taught me that if you are willing to serve and play by the rules, there is room in magic for you. It's all about service! With no experience whatsoever in magic, I attended my first magic club meeting in March of 2014. The club needed a volunteer to run for Sergeant-at-Arms and, out of my eagerness to be involved and willingness to serve, I volunteered. Ever since then, I have held some office in some magic club (often multiple offices and multiple clubs simultaneously). Out of my enthusiasm to be involved, I came early to meetings, set up chairs, stayed late and cleaned up trash. In my two years as a secretary, I was perfect and punctual on my article and minutes submissions to the national publications, always with a photo if applicable! I wanted our club to be noticed and our members to feel important by reading about themselves and seeing their pictures in M.U.M. and Linking Ring. I worked to promote our club's events (public shows, swap meets, etc.), and I worked to promote our magic club at events (Conventions, Rodeos, Penguin Magic, etc.). I represented the club in broken wand ceremonies, performed in fund raisers, for charities, led an SYM group for 2 years, became the grunt and the gopher and did behind the scenes work that most people who I know well, have no idea that I did. Things led to things and out of the desire and effort to be involved and to serve, I was elected the President of the Dallas Magic Club in 2017. Then I was elected the 2018 President of SAM 138 Alliance of Illusionists in Fort Worth. And now, in 2019, I have been elected President of TAOM for 2019-2020. I had no desire to be an officer when I got into magic. I had no ambitions or plans for these things. It all evolved because I was willing to serve. It's all about service! So in effort to determine the program, agenda, and operating policies for TAOM 2020, my committee and I are approaching it from the aspect of SERVICE! How can a TAOM convention best SERVE its attendees? Could it be by reducing the cost of registration, rooms, and parking to help make it more affordable to attendees? Could it be by offering a reduced-rate, basic registration geared toward an accompanying friend or loved one who may not want to attend lectures, but still wants to see all the shows and contests? Hmmm...service?....let's see...maybe we could put all the convention events in one centralized, yet spacious area of the hotel to keep everyone from walking great distances or taking busses to events? Possibly it could be by providing a hotel with an actual night club on the premises so that if attendees wish to have a cocktail, the only thing they have to drive that evening is the elevator? Could we arrange for a hotel lobby that contains an abundance of tables, couches, and comfy chairs near a soothing fountain offering late night jammers and old friends a great atmosphere to sit, visit, and catch up with each other after a year apart? Can we better serve our TAOM magicians by creating specialized, hands-on workshops, taught by experts, using props; training attendees - so they not only buy product, but they walk away with a new skill to improve their act? Can we do all that, and still increase the number and type of shows, that are the quality to measure up to other conventions? SERVICE says we can do that...better yet, SERVICE demands we do it! The 75th annual TAOM convention will be in Fort Worth, hosted by my home club, The Bruce Chadwick SAM Assembly 138 Alliance of Illusionists. Our 2020 Convention Planning Committee and I are working on an exciting convention for you next Labor Day weekend. I will not attempt to tell you all about it in one writing. In fact, I just wanted to introduce myself and give you an idea of our goals and strategy as we work on assembling what we hope will be a memorable and valuable experience, as you celebrate the 75th anniversary of the TAOM convention with us in Fort Worth. This column will keep you up on perpetual developments as they happen on a month by month basis. Our website will keep you up to date on the convention happenings, and process your registrations as well. So, please visit www.taom.org and explore the website for the latest on talent, the convention schedule, hotel info, dealer info, contest info, and FAQs (frequently asked questions). • Perfect Vision for TAOM
Vol. 10, No. 11, November 2019 Message from the President 2020: Perfect Vision for TAOM Greetings to the members, friends, and family of the Texas Association of Magicians. First of all, condolences to the Astros fans all over the state. The eyes of Texas were upon you and the hearts of Texas with you. Without question in my home, there were three fans pulling for the 'Stros, who were bummed at the outcome of game seven of this World Series. Secondly...what is UP with the cold temps this November? Technically it is still fall, but we in the DFW area just had our first taste of temperatures below 32 degrees. Ugh! Temperatures everywhere are almost ten degrees below average. Everyone be sure to keep warm as we move into the colder months. Just a reminder to book your TAOM registration at www.taom.org/2020. There you will find menu options with links to register for both the convention and the hotel at our special convention rate. We are limiting registration to 250 registrants - so you do not want to be among the ones who miss out because you did not act early enough. A number of you have asked whether we will be doing day passes as other TAOM conventions have done in the past. My answer is that although we may have a limited amount of public tickets for the evening shows, it is not likely that we will be selling day passes once the registrations are sold out, so I would not count on that. If you have seen or read this column previously, you are well aware that we in Fort Worth are claiming to have perfect 2020 vision into next year's TAOM convention.

  • With Walter Zaney Blaney
Anthony Darkstone Brook In Conversation With Walter Blaney The following article was written way back in 2002 and as the saying goes, it has, “withstood the test of time” . Since then, Rory Johnson, who wrote an article on Walter for MAGIC magazine used this article as a basis for his feature. In 2008, I was greatly honored when at the Texas Association of Magicians Convention, I was invited to Produce & Host a Live Talk Show with Walter as the main guest. Other guests on my show were Trixie Bond, Scott Wells, MarcoM, Chuck Lehr , Bruce Kalver , Frances Willard, Glen Falkenstien, Bill Palmer, Walter’s daughters Beck Blaney, Dr.Carol Blaney and Gold Medal Champion Shannon Blaney. And, last but not least, David Copperfield who was a Live phone-in guest. The photos accompanying this article depict some of those wonderful moments. Anthony Darkstone Brook In Conversation With Walter Blaney The phrase, ‘World Class Entertainer’ can only truly be applied to an elite few notable magicians. In the vanguard of that group one name resonates with singular clarity. That name is Walter Blaney. In more ways than one Walter Blaney stands tall in the world of magic. His 6ft – 6inch frame houses the presence of a formidable performer, creative genius and the inventive mind of some of magic’s greatest stage illusions. Lance Burton, David Copperfield, Paul Daniels and Sylvan are just a few of the world’s leading magicians that have used Walter’s magical creations in their shows. David Copperfield is quoted as saying that one of his favorite illusions is none other than Walter Blaney’s – Ladder Levitation.

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION TO THIS GUIDE The TAOM organization has a history of hosting some of the finest magic conventions in the world. Its yearly Labor Day weekend conclave is one of the best gatherings in magic. All who have ever had anything to do with planning a TAOM convention should be proud of these facts. Of course some conventions have been more successful than others. Factors all the way from convention location, planning, leadership, and even the status of magic in general have influenced convention success. No matter how one evaluates each convention however, there is no doubt that the TAOM conventions are modern extravaganzas of top-notch evening shows, contests, lectures, and special magic events. THE IDEA FOR THIS GUIDE In the beginning TAOM conventions cost little or nothing to host. They were simply gatherings of magicians who came together for fellowship and fun. Those times have changed of course and while fellowship and fun are still paramount, big budget issues are now a major concern.

  • Vol. 9, No. 9, September 2018 CONVENTION WRAP PAST
Vol. 9, No. 9, September 2018 CONVENTION WRAP PAST PRESIDENT JAMIE SALINAS WOW! I really mean it. WOW! Our convention in Houston turned out to be one of the all-time best according to many of the attendees. Sure, there were issues as with any large event, be but overall, I am extremely pleased with the outcome. We were initially bracing for a loss on this convention as our committee planned for about twice the number of registrations we actually had. Ultimately, we will end up in the black on this convention, thanks to some creative financing and public show ticket sales. Back to the good stuff.... We had over 250 attendees. We had eleven lectures, a panel discussion, three great evening shows, over fifteen dealers, a fantastic professional close-up show, stage contest, close-up contest, and one of the best midnight madness shows I have ever seen. We had a lot of people who worked hard to make this convention a great one and really made a huge difference. I personally learned a lot to the advancement of my magic and made some great new friends. I was inspired, amazed and educated as were many of our attendees. Where does the TAOM go from here as an organization? It appears that the days of large conventions are over, as the last three years have been much smaller with attendance averaging just over two hundred. Putting together a stellar line-up of talent and lectures, as we did in Houston, is not enough. I don’t have all of the answers, but we, as an organization, need to evolve to continue to be successful.

Vol. 8, No. 11, November 2017 FOR ALL MAGICIANS EVERYWHERE... THE PRESIDENT'S REPORT Last month I told you about the president's party being open to everyone and being a superhero and villains themed event. I have received many comments from attendees who are excited about this. So, start planning your costume for this party that you don't want to miss. I was hoping to be able to announce several performers that we will have at our convention at this time however we are still working on contracts and scheduling for some incredible performers. I am currently attending mindvention in Las Vegas so that is a little hint that we will have a mentalist or two. Our plan is to have something for everyone. Don't forget that the earlier you register the better your seats for the evening shows will be. Also please take advantage of the incredible room rate at the Hilton Americas we have negotiated for you and make your reservations now. Got to run guys. I literally am speaking to someone now about coming to our convention that you will certainly love! Jamie Salinas, 2018 TAOM President FRANKEL'S IS CLOSING Yep, after 67 years, Frankel's costume and magic store is closing. Lonnie Frankel's father began the business as Morty's Magic Mart in 1950 and Lonnie and Terrie took over in 1978. They have provided magic props, tricks, and supplies, along with thousands of costumes to Houston area customers ever since. Now they are retiring to "relax and enjoy life", even though they will miss the many friends and customers they met along the way.

  • Texas Association of Magicians ***** for ALL MAGICIANS
Vol. 7, No. 10 October 2016 Texas Association of Magicians ***** FOR ALL MAGICIANS EVERYWHERE! MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The convention last month in Corpus was a great time, but you should plan now for next year. We have lots of surprises and fun planned. I have learned a few things from MAGIC Live that we are going to incorporate into the 2017 convention. As you may know, our slogan is "Fabulous Fun in Frisco". That’s because our next TAOM will be held in the town that is home to the Dallas Cowboys new practice facility; home to the Frisco Rough Riders, a minor league baseball team; home to FC Dallas, a major league soccer team; and home to the Dallas Stars NHL hockey team. AND...for magic purposes, it also is the home of the owner of Genii Magazine! The hotel, being an Embassy Suite, is all suites! Every suite has a microwave and a small refrigerator, so, if you want, you can eat in the room. AND the hotel is attached to the huge Frisco Convention Center. We won’t have to go outside at all, unless we want to. Every event and show will take place inside the convention center. The hotel rate is $119 a night for up to 4 people in the room. With that, you get a full breakfast every morning and a manager’s reception every evening. There is free parking around the hotel or for $5 you can park in the garage. Embassy Suites is located right next door to Dr. Pepper Ballpark and Stonebriar Mall with plenty of restaurants and shops.
