Between 1920 and the late 1940s Loy wrote four overlapping versions of her autobiography: ‘The Child and the Parent’, ‘Goy Israels’, ‘Islands in the Air' and Tnsel'. This study develops a chronology for Loy’s autobiographies and it examines each version’s engagement with constructs of the ‘modem’ and of the ‘modem writer’. Since the 1980s scholars have primarily focused on the ‘modernist’ techniques Loy employed in her early poetry. Often these critical surveys exclude texts that cannot be grouped under the heading ‘modernism’ in order to justify Loy’s inclusion within the movement. Her poetry and her autobiographies written after the late 1920s suggest a shift in her aesthetics away from her earlier ‘modernist’ work. Till now’ her prose and her poetry written after 1925, about two-thirds of her total output, have been excluded from critical evaluations of her writing. Through readings of Loy's unpublished autobiographical manuscripts alongside her later, neglected poems this analysis argues for a broader and less exclusive understanding of Loy’s entire oeuvre. In particular, it will address Loy’s belief in modernism’s ‘prophetic’ potential and how this relates to her autobiographical writings on consciousness and on loss. The study begins with a discussion of ‘modernism’, ‘modernity’ and the ‘modem’, and charts how these terms are defined in Loy’s own essays on literature and art. It also examines Loy’s depictions of Victorian femininity in the context of constructions, then and more recently, of theJhi-de-siecle ‘New’ Woman' and of the twentieth-century ‘modem woman’. My analysis considers how Loy arrived at her current status, via editors, critics and her fellow poets. Ultimately I argue that Loy’s autobiographies portray the inability of ‘modernity’ to exclude the past. 4 Acknowledgments 1 wish to thank Professor Rachel Bowlby for her guidance, support and encouragement. Finally, I'd like to thank James Byme, Anne Enderwitz, and Christopher Madden for carefully reading and commenting on this study at various stages and my family for their generous support. 5 Introduction In his introduction to the most recent edition of Mina Loy’s poetry, The Lost Lunar Baedeker (1996), Roger Conover describes her as the forgotten former ‘Belle of the American Poetry Ball’, after which he recounts a typically ‘bohemian’ evening in 1917 at Greenwich Village’s Webster Hall where she, Marcel Duchamp and other members of New York’s avant-garde practised ‘outlandish behaviour’ in full (mandatory) masquerade.1 Conover admits that such recollections of Loy as ‘part of a group’ or as ‘a guest at a ball’, have in effect granted the poet ‘a forceful personality, a cerebral bearing, a perfect complexion, and a sexual body. But not a voice’.2 Yet, some Loy scholars cannot resist lending credibility and glamour to Loy’s literary reputation by listing her artistic allies and by recounting familiar myths of the early twentieth- century avant-garde. It would be premature to ignore this kind of mythmaking and its possible influence on Loy criticism. Despite increasing interest in Loy both within and outside of academia, assumptions made about her life and her character overshadow critical interpretations of her writing. Surely, mythmaking serves a dual purpose, especially in cases of ‘marginalised’ authors: it provides a historical context for the discussion of the author’s artistic contribution and heightens the reader’s sense of his or her uniqueness. Since the 1980s, scholars have used the years between 1914 and 1930 as their point of entry in assessing Loy’s literary contribution. During this period Loy published the writing for which she is best known today, roughly thirty poems and two poem series: ‘Love Songs' (1915-1917) and ‘Anglo-Mongrels and the Rose' (1923-1925). (Hereafter cited LLB96).as “ Conover, ‘Introduction', LLB96, pp. xi-xii. 6 voluminous versions of her autobiography in prose.3 These manuscripts exist in multiple draft versions and are contained in six of the eight boxes at Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Many of her prose manuscripts appear to be missing whole sequences of pages. The Beinecke holds almost all seven of Loy’s known autobiographical manuscripts: ‘Brontolivido’; ‘Goy Israels’; ‘Esau Penfold'; ‘The Child and the Parent’; ‘Islands in the Air’ and the manuscript of Insel, which was published in 1991, almost thirty years after Loy’s death.4 ‘Colossus', a narrative based on her relationship with the poet Arthur Cravan remains in private collection, but some excerpts have been published.5 The location of most of her manuscripts in one archive simplifies the process of accessing her unpublished material. However, it is likely that many of Loy’s readers are unaware of the manuscripts' existence because these prose narratives have been excluded almost entirely from

    THE STORY OF FOUNTAIN: HARD FACTS AND SOFT SPECULATION Thierry de Duve ABSTRACT Thierry de Duve’s essay is anchored to the one and perhaps only hard fact that we possess regarding the story of Fountain: its photo in The Blind Man No. 2, triply captioned “Fountain by R. Mutt,” “Photograph by Alfred Stieglitz,” and “THE EXHIBIT REFUSED BY THE INDEPENDENTS,” and the editorial on the facing page, titled “The Richard Mutt Case.” He examines what kind of agency is involved in that triple “by,” and revisits Duchamp’s intentions and motivations when he created the fictitious R. Mutt, manipulated Stieglitz, and set a trap to the Independents. De Duve concludes with an invitation to art historians to abandon the “by” questions (attribution, etc.) and to focus on the “from” questions that arise when Fountain is not seen as a work of art so much as the bearer of the news that the art world has radically changed.     PHYSICAL CULTURE AND SPORT STUDIES AND RESEARCH DOI: 10.2478/v10141-009-0005-1 Hook to the Chin Lev Kreft Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts – University of Ljubljana, Slovenia ABSTRACT Within historical avant-garde movements from the beginning of the 20 th century, a curious taste and fascination for boxing burst out, and developed later into the claim that art must become more similar to boxing, or to sport in general. This fascination with pugilism in the early stage of its popularity on the continent included such charismatic figures of the Parisian avant-garde as Arthur Cravan, who was Oscar Wilde’s nephew, a pretty good boxer and an unpredictable organizer of proto-dada outrages and scandals. After WWI, the zenith of artists’ and intellectuals’ love for boxing was reached in Weimar Germany. One of the well known examples connecting boxing with art was Bertolt Brecht with his statement that we need more good sport in theatre. His and other German avant-garde artists' admiration for boxing included the German boxing star May Schmeling, who was, at least until he lost his defending championship match against Joe Louis, an icon of the Nazis as well. Quite contrary to some later approaches in philosophy of sport, which compared sport with an elite art institution, Brecht’s fascination with boxing took its anti-elitist and anti-institutional capacities as an example for art’s renewal.     FORUM: IN THE ARCHIVES Live from the Archive: Film, Folders, and Mina Loy Sasha Colby In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, much of the talk around ideas of re-animation centred on the great archaeological expeditions where place names stood for sites of unimaginable recovery: Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Pompeii. A body of literature arose around this reclamation, often imaginatively reconstituting the historical from its material remains. The unprecedented unearthing of the past also led to questions: how could material relics at once be past yet at the same time exist in the present; give rise to fantasies of reconnection; disorient the line between then and now? Writers from Pater to Nietzsche were preoccupied by these questions and also by the perceived dangers of being consumed by history—as well as the delusion of being able to reclaim it. Intriguingly, in our own moment, new versions of these debates have been taken up by Performance Studies scholars, on many counts an unlikely group of inheritors. Yet questions about the power of the object in the archive, its ability to summon the past, its place in the present, its relation to performance modalities, and the archiving of performance itself, in many ways bear the traces of these earlier discussions. Indeed, Mike Pearson and Michael Shanks’ Theatre/Archaeology (2001) situates itself at this border precisely in order to unpack the conceptual similarities of theatrical and archaeological projects, all of which gesture, as Rebecca Schneider (2011) has shown, to reenactment as a kind of end-point for rediscovery.     Lacing Up the Gloves: Women, Boxing and Modernity Irene Gammel Ryerson University, Toronto Abstract This article explores women’s early twentieth-century engagement with boxing as a means of expressing the fragmentations and contradictions of modern life. Equally drawn to and repelled by the visceral agonism of the sport, female artists and writers of the First World War and post- war era appropriated the boxer’s virile body in written and visual autobiographies, effectively breaching male territory and anticipating contemporary notions of female autonomy and self- realization. Whether by reversing the gaze of desire as a ringside spectator or inhabiting the physical sublime of boxing itself, artists such as Djuna Barnes, Vicki Baum, Mina Loy and Clara Bow enlisted the tropes, metaphors and physicality of boxing to fashion a new understanding of their evolving status and identity within a changing social milieu. At the same time, their corporeal and textual self-inscriptions were used to stage their own exclusion from the sport and the realm of male agency and power. Ultimately, while modernist women employ boxing to signal a radical break with the past, or a reinvention of self, they also use it to stage the violence and trauma of the era, aware of limits and vulnerabilities. Learn to distinguish fundamental aesthetic characteristics of early twentieth century Modernisms through the study of prose, poetry and visual arts. (using primary and secondary sources). Explore the close relationship between Modernist movements and women’s changing social roles in the early twentieth century.     UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Fillia’s Futurism Writing, Politics, Gender and Art after the First World War A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Italian By Adriana Marie Baranello 2014 © Copyright by Adriana Marie Baranello 2014 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Fillia’s Futurism Writing, Politics, Gender and Art after the First World War By Adriana Marie Baranello Doctor of Philosophy in Italian University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Lucia Re, Co-Chair Professor Claudio Fogu, Co-Chair Fillia (Luigi Colombo, 1904-1936) is one of the most significant and intriguing protagonists of the Italian futurist avant-garde in the period between the two World Wars, though his body of work has yet to be considered in any depth. My dissertation uses a variety of critical methods (socio-political, historical, philological, narratological and feminist), along with the stylistic analysis and close reading of individual works, to study and assess the importance of Fillia’s literature, theater, art, political activism, and beyond. Far from being derivative and reactionary in form and content, as interwar futurism has often been characterized, Fillia’s works deploy subtler, but no less innovative forms of experimentation. For most of his brief but highly productive life, Fillia lived and worked in Turin, where in the early 1920s he came into contact with Antonio Gramsci and his factory councils. This led to a period of extreme left-wing communist-futurism. In the mid-1920s, following Marinetti’s lead, Fillia moved toward accommodation with the fascist regime. This shift to the right eventually even led to a phase ii dominated by Catholic mysticism, from which emerged his idiosyncratic and highly original futurist sacred art.
