Relieve stress and anxiety by creating art

What can you do to help relieve feelings of stress and anxiety? If you're an artist, you keep making art. And if you have never considered yourself an artist, now is the time to take up an artistic pursuit such as drawing or . It is never too late to start. Everyone can do it. If you can hold a brush or crayon or marker, you can create art. Making art doesn't have to be a big investment. All you need are a set of watercolor or acrylic paints, a brush, markers or crayons, and paper. You will be greatly rewarded emotionally, physically and spiritually for your creative efforts. As the famous artist Pablo Picasso once said, "Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life."

History Is Full Of Art Art has been in existence since the dawn of humankind. People have always had a natural impulse to use line, shape, color and form, to make meaning out of life and express themselves. Children do it as soon as they have the fine motor skills necessary to hold a crayon. Through this impulse, artists express the joys, sadness, fears, triumphs, beauty and ugliness of life. Artists are truth-tellers. They are often perceived as a threat and are the first to be censored during times of war and strife. Telling the truth is transformative, both for individuals and groups – and that is the medicinal power of art.

In The Mood Creating art heals not only the mind and spirit but also the body since all of these are interconnected. As you draw or paint, your breathing slows, your blood pressure lowers, and your mind lets go of daily struggles. This slowing down allows you to fully experience the moment. The process not only relaxes you but also brings a feeling of joy, increasing your energy and enthusiasm for life. Making art also allows you to play, freeing you to explore and experiment with new materials and methods. It also lets you express gratitude by seeing beauty where others may not. Creating art gives you an outlet for expressing your anger and frustration, as well as your personal views. Engaging with is a way of engaging with yourself because it lets you connect with yourself at a deeper level and express ideas and feelings that you cannot easily put into words. Making art can help you to connect with other people, too. If you take an art class, you will likely share ideas with other students. The creative process will help you make new friends and foster existing relationships in a positive environment.

Unleashing Your Creativity Although the process of making art is the most important part, your finished product is significant too. Your painting or drawing will serve as a visual reminder of the lessons you learned while making it, and you are likely to feel energized just by looking at it. If you don't know how to begin, here are some ways to start creating art. You will find that once you start, your creative energies will be unleashed and one idea will lead to the next. If possible, set aside a small table with your art supplies so you can get creative whenever the mood strikes.

Play And Experiment With Color Without thinking about it, choose colors that appeal to you and start painting with them, or tear pictures with those colors out of magazines and glue them down, combining them with paint. Don't think too much about their shapes or making anything recognizable – just enjoy the colors. The act of concentrating on the colors and determining color combinations will give you something to focus on other than the stresses of your daily life.

Draw In A Sketchbook Or Visual Journal Each Day Doing this will keep you grounded in the moment, alert to the sights around you, and ready to record fleeting thoughts and ideas.

Make A Small Painting Each Day It only takes about an hour, but the benefits of daily painting are many. Not only will you relieve stress, but your painting skills will improve quickly and you will be able to try new painting methods without fear of ruining a picture you have worked on for a long time. Plus, you will feel a sense of accomplishment as a result of creating something new every day.

Paint Or Draw Your Mood Artistic elements such as lines, color and shapes can help to express your feelings. Will you draw short dark marks or long flowing ones? Will your shapes be jagged with sharp edges, or rounded and curved?

Practice Blind Contour Drawing This type of drawing trains the eye to draw what it really sees rather than what it thinks it sees. To try it, pick an object, look at it while you draw its outline. Don't look down at your paper as you draw, no matter how tempting it is. By staying focused on the object, you will draw it more slowly and truly capture its uniqueness. Join An Art Class While you can do all of the above alone, it can be even more helpful to create art with other people. Building connections with others will serve you well the next time you are stressed and could use a friend.

Art History – Renlism

General Overview Realism was an art movement that revolted against the emotional and exaggerated themes of . Artists and writers began to explore the of every day life.

When was the Realism of art popular? The Realism movement lasted around forty years from 1840 to 1880. It followed the Romanticism movement and came before .

What are the characteristics of Realism? Realism artists tried to depict world exactly as it appears. They painted everyday subjects and people. They didn't try to interpret the setting or add emotional meaning to the scenes.

Examples of Realism Art (Jean-Francois Millet) This painting is a great example of realism. It shows three peasant women gleaning a field for some scraps of wheat. They are bent over in hard work in the hope of finding a tiny bit of food. This painting was not well received by the French upper class when it was first exhibited in 1857 as it showed the harsh reality of poverty.

The Gleaners

Young Women from the Village () The reality of this painting is in stark contrast to Romanticism. The three women are dressed in their country clothes and the landscape is rough and a little ugly. Even the cows are scraggly looking. The rich lady is handing some money to the poor girl while the others look on. Courbet was criticized for the "reality" of this painting, but that was what he found beautiful and was trying to capture.

The Fox Hunt () In this painting Winslow Homer shows a hungry fox hunting in the snow for food. At the same time there are ravens which are so driven to hunger they are hunting the fox. There is nothing heroic or romantic about this painting, just the reality of what happens in the winter to hungry animals.

Famous Realism Era Artists

 Gustave Courbet - Courbet was a French artist and a leading proponent of Realism in . He was one of the first major artists to use art as social commentary.  Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot - A French landscape painter who moved from Romanticism to Realism.  Honore Daumier - A French painter who was more famous for his caricatures of famous people while alive. His art became famous after he died.  - An American Realist painter who painted as well as landscapes. He also painted unique subjects like The Gross Clinic which showed a surgeon operating.  Winslow Homer - An American landscape artist known for his of the ocean.  Edouard Manet - A famous French artist who, at the forefront of French painting, began the movement from Realism to .  Jean-Francois Millet - A French Realist painter famous for his paintings of farm peasants.

Interesting Facts about Realism  The Realism movement started in France after the 1848 revolution.  Unlike some other artistic movements, there was little or architecture as part of this movement.  Near the end of the Realism movement, a school of art called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood immerged. This was a group of English poets, artists, and critics. They felt the only true art was the High .  The invention of photography in 1840 likely helped to spur on the realism movement.

Art History – Impressionism

Impressionism began in France when a group of young and talented artists decided to rebel against the established art critics, called the Salon in France, and form a new style of painting all their own. Impressionists wanted to capture a moment in time. Critics said that their work was merely "impressions" of reality and the name stuck.

When was the Impressionist style of art popular? The Impressionist movement began in the 1860s and became most popular in the 1870s and 1880s.

What are the characteristics of Impressionism? The Impressionists wanted to capture a moment in time. They were more concerned with the light and color of the moment than with the details of objects they were painting. They often painted outdoors and worked quickly to capture the light before it changed. They used rapid brush strokes and often used unmixed color to save time. They used unusual visual angles and common everyday subjects.

Examples of Impressionist Art Dance at Le moulin de la Galette (Pierre-Auguste Renoir) This painting depicts an outdoor scene of a dance on Sunday afternoon in . Renoir captures the afternoon light flickering as it filters through the trees. The painting captures a moment in time. It is one of the most famous of the Impressionist paintings. A smaller version of it once sold for over $78 million!

Dance at Le moulin de la Galette Lydia Leaning on Her Arms in a Box (Mary Cassatt) This painting is an example of an Impressionist . The quick and sweeping brush strokes capture the moment of the girl leaning forward in anticipation at the . The girl, Lydia, appears relaxed and confident. The colors are bright and capture the lighting prior to the show beginning.

Paris Street: Rainy Day () This Impressionist painting gives the feeling of a photograph. It appears to capture people as they are casually walking down the street in the rain. Although this painting has sharper images than many impressionist paintings, it still captures a fleeting moment in time including the light and the weather conditions.

Famous Impressionist Artists

 Gustave Caillebotte - A French painter who was interested in photography and probably was the most "realist" of the Impressionist group. Caillebotte came from a wealthy family and helped out some of the poorer artists of the time.  Mary Cassatt - An American painter who lived much of her life in France, Mary became good friends with Degas. She often painted women and their children.  - Degas is famous for painting pictures of ballet dancers. Unlike many of the other Impressionist artists, he would sketch his subjects live and then paint them later in his studio.  Edouard Manet - A realist painter for much of his career, Manet's artwork bridged between Realism and Impressionism and gave the Impressionists credibility.  Claude Monet - Arguably the founder of the Impressionist movement, Monet painted many series of objects in different lighting. It was his painting, Impression: Sunrise that gave birth to the name Impressionism.  Berthe Morisot - One of the original Impressionists, Berthe was the only woman to display her artwork in the first Impressionist exhibition.  - Older than the rest of the Impressionists, Pissarro helped to mentor and lead the younger artists. He displayed artwork in all eight of the Impressionist exhibitions.  Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Part of the original group of Impressionists, Renoir lived in poverty early on, but became successful by the end of the 1880s. Many of his paintings such as Dance at Le moulin de la Galette and On the Terrace have become world famous.

Interesting Facts about Impressionism  When a critic called the art "impressions", it was meant as in insult.  The established art community was outraged when the young Impressionist artists held their own exhibition in 1874.  Many of the artists fled from France to England during the Franco-Prussian war.  Impressionists often painted the same view or subject over and over trying to capture different moments in light, color, and time.  By the late 1880's Impressionism was very popular and many artists throughout the world were taking up the style.

Art History – Symbolism

Symbolism was an art movement in response to Realism and Impressionism. Poets, musicians, artists, and writers all used Symbolism to express meaning in an indirect manner. Symbolist painters wanted their pictures to depict a meaning beyond just the figures they drew.

When was the Symbolism movement? The Symbolism movement took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was born in France, but there were strong movements in , Belgium, and Austria as well.

What are the characteristics of Symbolism? Symbolist painters used a wide variety of subjects including heroes, women, animals, and landscapes. They typically gave these subjects deep meanings such as love, death, sin, religion, or disease. They would use metaphors (or symbols) rather than real life to represent something.

Examples of Symbolism Art Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I () This portrait of a woman was sold for $135 million in 2006. At the time it was the most expensive painting ever sold. In the painting the model is covered in a golden gown. The gown is extremely decorated with fancy details and gold leaf. The gown forms a powerful symbol of a person changing their identity as well as the hope of the future.

The Wounded Angel (Hugo Simberg) In this painting, a young angel is being carried by two boys. The angel is wounded and the two boys are very serious. One of the boys is looking directly at the viewer. The angel was a symbol of the ideal, but it was wounded when it meets with reality. It was voted 's national painting in 2006.

Ida Reading a Letter (Vilhelm Hammershoi) Hammershoi often painted sparse interiors and portraits with the person turned to the side or with their backs to the viewer. In this picture Ida, Hammershoi's wife, is sideways reading a letter. The door to her right is open, inviting her to leave. The table appears to have only one setting. These symbols give the viewer the feeling of loneliness that the lady is feeling while reading the letter.

 Pierre Purvis de Chavannes - This French painter was one of the leaders of the Symbolist movement. He was also known for painting murals in buildings.  Vilhelm Hammershoi - A Danish painter known for his symbolist portraits and stark interiors.  - A well known Swiss painter who became part of the Expressionist movement late in his career.  Gustav Klimt - Klimt's paintings have gained fame in recent years. He was an Austrian painter who worked in Vienna. His most famous paintings include The Kiss as well as two portraits of Adele Bloch-Bauer.  Gustave Moreau - Moreau used Biblical as well as mythological characters in many of his paintings.  - Most famous for his painting The Scream, this Norwegian artist had a great influence on the Expressionist movement.  Odilon Redon - This French painter was a leader of the Symbolism movement. He said his work was meant to inspire people.  Hugo Simberg - A Finnish painter, Simberg is most famous for his painting The Wounded Angel.  Victor Vasnetsov - A leader in the Russian art revival, Vasnetsov painted both historical and mythological subjects.

Interesting Facts about Symbolism

 Symbolism had a great influence on Expressionism and , two future artistic movements.  The Symbolist Manifesto was published by essayist and poet Jean Moreas in 1886.  The famous Post-impressionist artist Paul Gauguin is sometimes considered a Symbolist painter.  It can be thought of more of a philosophy about the content and meaning of art than a specific style.  Many Symbolist artists would deliberately make the meaning of their work obscure and not explain it. This way the viewer could make their own interpretation.
